The Bullshit-Free Witchcraft Podcast: 17. Older Doesn’t Mean Better
I got a question in my inbox from a listener asking if whether or not knowing a lot of Wicca was created less than a hundred years ago made it feel less legitimate. It’s an interesting question, and whether or not something being more “established” makes it more “real” is something I thought we should tackle.
Also, there’s a tiny bit more of that interview with author Bree NicGarran from last episode that serendipitously applied (that was cut), so I’ve included it here.
Music: “The Man With One Eye,” “The Quest of Alomar/Open Skies,” “So I Said It,” “Untitled Nonsense” (Trae Dorn)

My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.
I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think “Well, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot more” so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that “10” is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said “6” because I thought “Well, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.”

Making Your Room Magical
Hi everyone! So, I’ve mentioned before that there are a million different ways to incorporate magic into your every day life. I think that making magic part of your everyday routine is important, but you can also add a magical boost to your bedroom! Here are some ideas for making your room magical. Enjoy!
The Bed:
Draw sigils on the bed frame (maybe underneath the bed so that it’s out of sight) for good sleep or to ward off nightmares (or to add a little extra spice for when you bring guys from the bar home…I don’t judge.)
Or you could stitch sigils into your pillow case or sheets instead.
When you lay down to go to sleep, create a big energetic shield around your bed to protect you while you sleep
The Windows:
Enchant your curtains/shutters/blinds to keep out prying eyes
Place tarot cards, crystals, and other tools on the window sill to let them charge with the power of the moon/sun.
Open up the windows every once in a while to release all of the excess and negative energy out of your room and into the air.
The Carpet:
Make cleansing “floor washes” for your carpet by making a powder with herbs and baking soda. Sprinkle it over the carpet and vacuum to remove. If you have wood floors in your room, you can make a liquid floor wash instead.
The Shelves, Side Tables, etc.
Create a small altar on top of a shelf, side table, or other surface in your room. It can be to honor the deities that you worship, or it can be for something else like drawing in prosperity or good fortune.
Dedicate shelves to different purposes by anointing them with different magical oils.
The Walls:
Magically program the walls with protective energy, like a giant shield around the entire room
Enchant posters or paintings of people/celebrities/etc to watch over the room or give the room a certain desired vibe.
Create a “vision board” with pictures of things that you would like to have in the future (vacation destinations, dream jobs/houses, etc). Every time you look at it, send some energy into it. Over time, the build up of energy will help draw those things to you.
The Closet:
Write down things that you would like to keep secret from the world or things that you would like people to not notice. Hide the pieces of paper in the closet to hide them from the world like “skeletons in the closet”.
Charge your favorite clothes to help bring confidence, motivation etc. to you when you wear them.
These are just some ideas that you can play around with to keep magic alive in your everyday life :) If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask. Thanks for reading,
Livi

crystal divination 💎🔮
simple method to answer Y/N questions

what you need: three small tumbled stones (one black, one white, one depending on what themes you are asking about) + one black candle + one white candle + pen and paper + one square piece of any fabric + incense smoke if you’d like to make the session more magical ♡
programming ritual:
hold one of your stones close to you, like for example to your heart or in your closed hand, or you can even hold it to your mouth and speak onto it - may you do whatever feels right for you, and say aloud or repeat in your mind:
black stone — “you will tell me when the answer is no!”
white stone — “you will tell me when the answer is yes!”
other stone — “you will be the one who tells the truth!”
you can also support this with the small pieces of paper which you see in the picture above. simply write your yes and no onto paper, burn the no! with a black candle and the yes! with a white candle, and then rub each of those ashes onto the corresponding stone.
“the other stone” can be for example: rose quartz or green aventurine for love matters; amethyst or purple fluorite for spiritual matters; malachite or pyrite for financial matters; blue stones for expression and communication; yellow stones for wisdom; oranges ones for passion and creativity; and so on.
asking your crystals:
gather your crystals, hold them to your heart (or else) and ask your question out loud or repeat mindfully in your thoughts. hold your hands around 15cm above your square piece of fabric and shake your crystals in your cupped hands. really focus on your question and drop the crystals on the surface once you “feel it is the right moment” (i personally get a sudden impulse to drop my crystals when the question is truly absorbed, haha).
reading your crystals:
“the other stone” is the significator in this simple crystal spread. if the black (no) stone is closer to the significator stone, it means the answer is no. if the white (yes) stone is closer to the significator stone, it means the answer is yes. if they’re both exactly the same apart, it can mean a lot of things: the answer is maybe, the answer isn’t clear yet, the answer can not be done with yes and no. if the crystals generally are really far away from the signficator stone, i always interpret that the answer isn’t important or that this occurs maybe rather in the future, or that the person should maybe not worry about these things. if one is really close to the significator stone, it is a strong response. if the stones fall out of the square, you can either ask again (but never ask one question more than three times in a row) or you can interpret the far-awayness as well. be creative :3
have fun trying my dears !! ♡

gentle reminder that the ‘&’ designation on Ao3 is for platonic relationships and platonic relationships only, and you should use the ‘/’ for any relationship the endgame is romantic for, even if the fic/series starts platonic
this isn’t a callout - i didn’t know either for a really really long time (like, only in this past year) but y’know - now you know

Tarot spreads can be useful to giving yourself and others insightful and revealing readings. They’re a guide to the flow, story, and structure of readings, and can be used as a foundational layer to base intuitive readings off of. I definitely recommend using spreads when first starting out, because they can help you understand card meanings in the context of the topic or question of their spread position. Some readers don’t like spreads, and that’s understandable, because they can sometimes feel restrictive or limiting in the scope of the context of the card(s) in each position. Hopefully these guidelines on Tarot spreads and their benefits will help you incorporate, change, or leave them behind in a way that is effective for your study and connection to your cards.
A Tarot spread consists of two or more cards, with specific positions for each card(s) and topics/questions that correspond with each position. Tarot spreads usually have a theme or number of themes that can provide a structure or flow to your readings. There are a number of sites and social media accounts that offer free spreads to use in your personal practice (be sure to always give credit to spread creators when posting your readings using their spreads!). These spreads can cover a wide range of topics, themes, life events, etc. that can help you develop your connection to your cards as a Tarot reader.
Creating your own Tarot spreads is another great way to connect to your decks and strengthen your interpretive skills. When first getting into Tarot reading, daily draws help build a consistent practice of reading and working out your interpretations of the cards. Using a two or three card spread can help develop an understanding of your cards and their meanings in the context of different topics or questions. Two card spreads can highlight the duality of a situation, opposing energies at play in your life, or create a narrative with a beginning and an end. Three card spreads offer insight on how a situation may develop (beginning, middle end/past, present, future), or provide a more well-rounded picture of what’s going on, for example, body, mind, spirit spreads.
There are a few things to consider when cultivating your own tarot spreads. It’s important to make sure that the questions/topics that each position highlights are relevant to the theme of your reading and concise enough to not be confusing when it’s time to interpret the cards. The number of cards thrown can also play a vital role in the crafting of your original spreads. Some examples to help figure out how many questions are necessary for each reading may include numerical correspondences to the themes/topics expressed in the spread or shapes that the cards may be placed into. While spreads focus more on individual cards in the context of their position, it is still beneficial to look at your reading as a whole. Having multiple methods for approaching your readings provide detail and depth to your interpretations and allow us different perspectives and lenses to view our cards through.

🍜Healing Soup Spell 🍜
I based this recipe off of this recipe I found a few years ago and it has gone through a LOT of tweaking, especially in regards to herbs and the like. You can 1000% customize this spell to your heart’s content – especially if you’re not a Norse practitioner like me! I came up with the spell during my undergrad when I was helping organize an academic conference and didn’t have the time to get sick since the conference was a week away and it works wonders!
Ingredients:
2 tbsp. butter (I’d highly recommend my garlic butter protection spell!) ½ an onion (protection, cleansing, absorbing negative energy) ½ c. of celery, chopped (calming) 1 c. of carrots, diced (protection, healing) ½ to 1 lb. of chicken (grounding, healing, protection, strength) 1 ½ c. of vegetable broth, salted 5 c. of chicken broth, salted 1 ½ c. pasta of choice (I use pasta in fun shapes!) ½ tsp. basil (protection, purification, harmony, calm) ½ tsp. oregano (happiness, strength, vitality, energy) ¼ tsp. sage (protection, purification, cleansing) 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary (protection, purification, banishing, healing, sleep) Grated ginger to taste; about 1 tsp. (health, prosperity) Sea salt or pink salt to taste (purification, cleansing, banishing, grounding and centering) Pepper to taste (protection, banishing, wards off dark/negative energy) 6+ cloves of garlic, minced; dependent on personal taste (health, prosperity)
Cooking Instructions:
1. Rub salt and pepper into your chicken and throw it into a frying pan with the rest of your butter and cook your chicken. Once it’s finished cooking, let your meat rest and then shred it. 2. As your chicken rests, in a medium to large sized pot, heat up 1 tbsp. butter until it’s mostly melted. Then throw in your onion and your celery and cook them until they’re soft. 3. Add your vegetable and chicken broth into the pot with the celery and onion and add your diced carrots into the broth pot. 4. Add your herbs and wait until your vegetables go soft. 5. After your vegetables soften, put your shredded chicken into the pot along with your desired pasta and the sprigs of rosemary. Cook for about 20 minutes or so (or at least until you reach the desired density of pasta; I prefer mushy noodles when I get sick because my throat swells). 6. After this time, take your herbs that you’ve used and sprinkle the herbs on your soup in the form of the following runes: Ansuz, Sowilo/Sowulo, and Laguz. Ansuz - Good health, harmony, blessings. Sowilo/Sowulo - The sun, life-force, health, victory, wholeness. Laguz - Water, healing power of renewal, life energy. Note: If you don’t work with runes and/or aren’t a Norse practitioner, you can absolutely omit this step OR you can create your own sigil beforehand. If you don’t want to use these specific runes, you can also do your research into what other runes might be beneficial for you! 7. Once you’ve sprinkled on your rune-herbs, you can do a little chant if you so desire. I like to sing the Healing Incantation from Tangled. As you chant or sing, stir your soup, clockwise/sunwise/deosil/doesil to imbue your soup with luck. 8. Consume your soup! I find that this recipe makes enough to last a few days, too!
