“You accepted them and look what it got you.” Caleb moved his hand back up through his hair, doing his best to keep his voice low as to not cause a scene, or more of one than they already had. “Great, well then that makes two of us.” he had had no intentions of making her feel sorry for him, it was more needing her to understand why he’d done what he had. Of course he couldn’t make her understand that either if she didn’t or didn’t want to.

Elena felt a shiver run down her spine, as Caleb’s finger brushed against hers. She bit her lip, staring at the screen as her heart pounded faster in her chest. A small curl of guilt wrapped around her stomach. Her body never reacted this way when Simon touched her hand. But it meant nothing. It had to mean nothing. It was just an accident, after all. Probably.

Exhaling shakily, Elena withdrew her hand from the popcorn bucket to eat the pieces she’d grabbed, trying to focus on the movie once more.

The movie continued, Caleb keeping his focus on it as best as he could, though honestly about halfway through he wasn’t entirely sure what was going on in the plot anymore. The final credits started to roll and he watched as the people in the seats below theirs began to get up and leave. “That was umm that was something.”

“If you must know I’ve been following some leads on some people. Nothing major, but enough to keep note of.” he eyed his drink, tapping his fingers against the side of it, “also there was my birthday.”

Caleb inhaled and simply listened as the man rambled on. Bit. So the man was a werewolf then, there was only one other kind that he knew of that was turned when bitten and he’d already ruled vampire out. “Yeah, listen, I don’t work for anybody and I have no idea who bit you.” he was certain he knew who it wasn’t at least, “Look you can pretend you didn’t get bit and all that, I don’t really give a shit, but you did. Just like a lot of other people did. Just like my dad did. Being a werewolf doesn’t make you a monster. If you were a monster you would have been one before you were bitten.”

It unnerved Ares that this person could tell he wasn’t human anymore. Did his very existence scream monster now? “You know you sound insane right now, don’t you?” He’d been told not to let anyone know. Why would he allow this stranger to just out him?

“I know I would sound insane to someone who actually doesn’t know what I’m talking about. Then again I wouldn’t say the things I am to them in the first place. I learned how to keep this kind of thing a secret before I’d even had my first kiss.” he gave a shrug, “but be my guest and keep pretending that you catching my phone just happened to be completely normal human reflexes.”

Elena watched the movie, becoming engrossed in it. She didn’t notice Caleb reaching for the popcorn at the same time she did, their fingers brushing against each other. She bit her lip, freezing for a moment as she didn’t know if she should continue like nothing had happened or yank her hand away to keep things from being awkward. Or would pulling away make things awkward?

Caleb had started to curl his fingers around some of the popcorn when he felt something against his fingers. Something that wasn’t the buttery popcorn he was prepared to enjoy. He kept his eyes on the screen, and for a moment let a finger purposefully brush against hers before pulling his hand out and popping the small handful he’d gotten into his mouth.

“I didn’t leave a note because I knew you’d go after me.” Caleb said without even needing a moment to think about his words. “You’re right, we were partners, and you almost died because of that. Because of me. Did you ever stop to think that I don’t need the death of another person who didn’t deserve it on my hands? Jesus fucking Christ, Ky I already see the faces of enough people when I sleep, I didn’t need to see yours too.
