Let’s say the x files ended at season 8 (which we both know it should have) what do you think Mulder and Scully would have done for work? Would they be working together? Or have separate careers?

I think Mulder and Scully wouldn't be able to remove The X-Files from their blood, but they'd have a son now-- a taste of that "normal life" even Mulder craves. There's no way they'd lose a second more with him than needed when they've lost so much with so many others (Samantha and Emily, particularly.)

My guess:

I don't see Mulder taking a regular 9-to-5, not with Colonization still looming overhead; and I don't see Scully quitting her professional outlet to be a stay-at-home mom. Both act as consultants for Doggett and Reyes (who take over the files, possibly expand it-- the basement was insular due mostly to Mulder's influence.)

So, Scully takes a position at Quantico, Mulder becomes a freelancer. Their jobs always end up intertwining, with Scully acting as a direct link back to the basement; and the duo work off of Doggett and Monica's finds to further their own research.

William grows into a fat little chubby baby, then a toddler, then etc. Maggie babysits when either parent needs to pull long shifts or fly off on a case. Skinner has a secret wildlife we'll never know about. TLG are the best trio of gangly uncles. Everyone's as happy as they can be with the end of the world approaching.

*points a gun at an air base worker who has at least half a foot on her*

*locks herself in a closet with Mulder even though he might be infected and try to kill her*

*breaks into a government facility to steal top-secret science*

*tries to conduct an illegal hostage exchange on a bridge*

*gets on a plane to Puerto Rico while being followed and treks off into the middle of the jungle while being pursued by local military*

*walks into an active hostage situation and yells at the people in charge*

*jets off to Alaska without a second thought and barges into a government hospital*

*lies to a government committee and drives off to New Mexico with her unconscious partner, risking both her life and career*

*walks into a hospital where a mind controlling villain is hiding without her gun or any sort of plan beyond ‘get Mulder out of there’*
