Calligraphy Journey

Liz here! Always remember calligraphy is a journey and not a race. I am here to practice, practice, practice since I’m a newbie. I will be documenting my calligraphy journey and rebloging inspiration. We can definitely learn together ✨

Letting you know that now we’re going to learn celtic calligraphy!!! So excited! Here’s the first letters I practiced (a-p). I love how there’s no set size for the letters, and they can be done differently (elongating, shortening, crossing it with another letter). Plus, there are different variants of some letters. In the A, I practiced two of them, but there are others.

Today I’m here to show you my roman lettering project. Since we’re still starting it was a rather easy one. All we had to do was pick a quote and write it with decorations surrounding it. I picked ‘Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud’ by Maya Angelou. The first picture has the decorated paper drafts, since I have never painted with watercolors. The second pic has a practice of the quote and the last one is the finished project. What do you think? Good for a beginner huh? 😄

I went and bought a sketchpad so now my practices will be better done. On this one, I practiced half a square (S), 3/4 square (Z, U, X), and a bit bigger than a square (M). I have to say that these look better than the first ones I did, and I know there’s letters I haven’t shown, but I just can’t find those. That said, I will gladly answer any questions. This practice is the last one before I start making the final project with roman lettering.

It’s been a good week. We’ve started learning how to write a few letters. Roman lettering is very interesting (and intricate), letters are measured inside a box. So this weeks letters take up a full square (O, C, D, Q, G) or half a square (L, E, F, P, R, B). Up next is a pic of my first practice. I used a paper from my grandma’s sketchpad ‘cause I still haven’t gone out to buy good paper.
I have to send this to my prof... She prints them out, corrects them and sends it back. Online classes aren’t the best for these types of classes that are supposed to be interactive but we’re making it work.
I said this was my first practice, but it’s my first *official* practice (the ones my prof sees) ‘cause I had to practice beforehand.
I’m still struggling with a few, so I’ll keep practicing those.
Also, I tried to write them smaller to see if that helps me have better control... eeehhh not so much difference.

Everything is going well. Prof said we were learning Roman, Celtic, Gothic and Italic styles. Can’t wait!
We’ve already started with the basic Roman strokes (straight, diagonal, horizontal lines and half moons) and will soon start learning the letters once we get the hang of the basics. Also, we had to choose our length where we could control our lines best.
My current problem is finding a paper that doesn’t bleed ink. I know I have to go out and buy some but meanwhile, none of the ones I have work. Here are my tries from the first class, in one of the papers. This one is glossy with the obvious problem that it didn’t absorb the ink.

The letters shown was just the ones I tried when the prof was explaining how our basic strokes will connect to form letters.
When I go out to buy paper, which would you recommend?

Bonjour tout le monde!
I am taking a course on calligraphy and I created this side blog to document my progress in it.
I’ve never been creative but wanted to start taking art classes and I thought Calligraphy is a good place to start so here I am
Here’s the pen I bought
Tumblr media
The teacher told us we could buy fountain pens (the one above) or dip pens. I gotta say I really wanted a dip pen but the art store didn’t have them so it’ll be something I get in the future.
