Nova let out a loud sigh as she walked away from the tavern’s patron. She longed for normal clothing and her own bed. She was already tired of this place and wished she was at her own bar rather than stuck in this corseted dress and dirty tavern. “What would you like?” She asked as she rounded the next table.

“I think that’s a great idea! And if it’s a weekly thing, I’m sure I could talk to my boss to work out a discount deal or something with you.” As she was finished up making sure everything was perfect inside the box she listened the woman continue, and when she said where she worked Liz’s head popped up, her eyes widening. “Oh!” she exclaimed, her smile growing more by the second, “You’re Nova!” she was grinning now, bright and excited, “My brother works there. Harrison. He always has nice things to say about you. It’s nice to finally be able to meet you in person.”
“Small little world,” Nova laughed. It surprised people just how small New York was at times and it scared the phoenix slightly. But thankfully she knew how to keep a lid on her secrets so she didn’t need to be worried. At least for now. “That is nice to here. I am sure you will hear even better things once I bring these treats,” she grinned. “But I am glad I can put a face to the name as well.”

“No, you’d still be walking around like a zombie. You’re welcome – but you can thank me later. After we trigger your memories.” He motioned towards the kitchen, where items littered the dining room table. He’d completely ransacked her room and everything he could remember the Ouroboros taking from her, even though he’d never been let in on the plan. “Go look.”
The phoenix glanced at Kasey again before getting up to take a look around the apartment. She crossed her arms, protecting herself from nothing and everything all at once. It was a small place but there were a lot of used and vintages items in the apartment- Nova uncrossed her arms to run her fingers along the countless vinyls on one of the shelves as she made her way to the table full of items. Her gaze was first drawn to a necklace; an older necklace but beautiful nevertheless. It was well loved and laid in a tray near a small framed picture.
“My parents,” she whispered to herself. She instantly knew who the faces were when she saw them. The necklace was from Charlie back when they first met in Japan all those decades ago. It held a lot of sentimental value to her but it wasn’t strong enough to trigger her memories like her parents. The people who did everything to protect her but had been gone for years now. Tears threaten to spill down her cheek as she thought about forgetting them. For living her life with no memory of them. As much as she wanted to be upset for losing another life- remembering her parents was far more important to her than a life without them in it. “Thank you.”

“That sounds like something I wouldn’t admit to seeing even if I had seen it,” he commented. He ignored the weird look that had momentarily crossed her face. “But that’s for another time, since you chose laser tag as today’s activity,” he pointed out as they got in line.
“Why not?” Nova questioned. “You don’t want to admit to seeing some top notch movies? Do you tell everyone about the shitty movies you see?” It was easier to tease and just forget about what she had been through and all the confusing feelings she felt. “The perfect activity. I don’t think there was a better idea out there.”

“Oh, no? What is it that you do around here, then?” Emilio asked in genuine curiosity. It was a nice spot and the music was fantastic. He’d only been here a hand full of times before with Maggie but couldn’t recall seeing his impromptu bartender. Picking up the glass, Milho took a heady sip from the tumbler. “There’s no better way to drink it, meu querido. Thank you.”
“Paperwork, deal with inventory, attempt to update or post on our social media pages but I usually delegate that someone much more equipped for that. The more behind the scenes duties that customers don’t think about,” she listed off. “The fun things every owner has to deal with,” she joked. “My thoughts exactly,” Nova laughed as she leaned back against the bar. “You are welcome.”

Just Kasey. But it made sense, Cyrus still had moments where he craved the company of his fellow Basilisk’s beyond anything else. There was a comfort in having a shared context, shared physiology. Others that understood what it was to live in similar skin. The irrational spark of jealousy died down and he gave the Phoenix a sly smile, “Is it really so surprising? That I might worry about you?” Cyrus shifted closer to her, his body being pulled into the sphere of her warmth. The Basilisk’s smile widened, “Even certified badasses like yourself have off days. But I didn’t mean to imply that you couldn’t take care of yourself.” He reached out and took her arm in his, an old fashioned gesture that brought them side by side. Her warmth breathed along his body and he nodded, “Let’s get out of here then shall we?” He only stopped to grab his coat, gloves and beanie as they felt headquarters, “Where should we go, Brigit? Soho? Bora-bora?”
“You haven’t known me for all that long so it wouldn’t be that surprising,” Brigit pointed out. It was nice to be cared about especially when you think you have no one in your life but of course now she had her memories of her childhood with her loving parents until they were both ripped away from her. She had been alone since then before settling down some roots in New York but after everything she had to begin to question her choice to move here. “I never believed you doubted me...you have seen me train,” she laughed. She couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips as he looped their arms together. “I don’t know, Bora Bora sounds nice but it is a bit cliche, wouldn’t you say? I feel Antartica or some glacier in Greenland sounds far more interesting.” It was only a joke but to escape to somewhere incredibly quiet and deserted because of how weather was exactly the place she wanted to run towards. “Think you could handle a bit of cold? Or should we stick to Soho?”

“I think we’ve already had the discussion about ass kickings,” Oliver said. He preferred to agree to disagree on that point, and not test out either of their boasts. Then neither of them won but neither of them lost. “And who’s Jeff Bailey?” he asked as he opened the door to the laser tag place.
“Right,” Nova nodded as she forced a smile on her face. She had almost forgotten that they had already had this conversation before...it seemed so long ago. It was like another lifetime for her. It technically was but he had no clue so she kept that smile on her face and tried to move past that memory. “You don’t know who Jeff Bailey is?” She asked. “Have you not seen Out of the Past? Classic film noir, Oliver. You are missing out.”

Elizabeth laughed at the comment, shrugging, “I think you will be. The gesture alone would be something appreciated I think. Everyone likes getting little rewards and treats, and in turn it’ll probably continue having them enjoy working.” She mused as she finished up packaging the box for the woman to take. “What do you do?”
“I think I might make it a weekly thing. Prepare for the weekend rush with treats on Friday or something. I know I am wiped out more if I am more on hand and that is only for a couple hours. So you being my face around here more,” she smirked. “I own Fitzgerald Jazz & Poetry Club. Have you been by?” Nova asked her.

“Yeah I think there are other thing’s that need to focused on especially if her murder seems most likely solved with time. “ She mused before nodding her head. “ That’s honestly why I’ve been getting all the comments on it. I like people being interested in those topics but maybe they need to branch out. Honestly yes up until a couple years ago though. With Leonardo Dicaprio wanting to make a movie about it and American Horror Story stealing it’s ideas from it, it’s also become quite a common story. The whole idea of his hotel though is something that could be analyzed more.
“If I remember correctly...he has had those movie rights for a few years now but has not done anything with it yet. Is he finally making that movie?” Nova questioned her. “What do you want people to be interested in? More modern crimes and mysteries or something still unsolved decades later?”

Elizabeth smiled as she put a bite onto a little napkin and slid it over before nodded, “Oh- yeah of course!” She grabbed a little box and started piling them in. “I bet you’re a hit with your employees if you bring them brownies. Definitely a good work incentive.”
Nova smiled at the woman as she slid over the small bite for her to try. “I hope I am a big hit by bringing these. They are amazing but there is a chance they are more amazing than my good act,” she joked. “I think a treat once a week is the least I can do. They have to deal with customers while I sit in the back most nights working on paperwork and shit.”

Brigit did have an entire business to run, a life to settle back into and he could only imagine how everything over the holiday season affected her business and her personally. He wondered if the Phoenix’s were haunted by the ghosts of people they no longer could remember. But he didn’t ask. He knew better. He smiled, “My incredible gain then. Who were you originally looking for?” Cyrus moved closer to the Phoenix, enjoying the heat of her body as he let his arm move around her back for a moment, in a friendly and comforting appearing gesture. “Don’t run yourself into the ground, Brigit. Don’t you heal slower than most?” He listened to her and nodded his head, “It’s good to see you. Come on. I’ll take you to the kitchen and then you can sit and have someone wait on you for a change. Unless you want to go somewhere else?”
“Just Kasey. I was in the area so I stopped in to see if he’d be around but I suppose I should have rang him instead. I have one but I find myself hardly ever using it,” she joked. “Is that some genuine concern I hear? My heart warms at that but you do not need to worry about me. I am resting just as much during my time off. I am sure things will settle down soon enough and I will be able to pull back in due time.” She had been keeping herself away as she tried to settle into this new life and had indeed thrown herself into work but it was her bar again rather than the cover given to her. “I am kind of a badass or I would like to think I am so a little work is not going to take me down. A real force would have to be responsible for that one,” she smirked. “Lets go somewhere else. Your kind offer of waiting on me can be saved for another day.”

Cyrus took the offered shirt and pulled it over his head. Looking at the Phoenix that had been rather MIA for a while. But all of them had dealt with Christmas and New Years in their own ways. “I’m surprised to see you here.” He meant at HQ. “I thought you might have forgotten the address.” He was teasing but her body language seemed to say more than just wanting to kill some time with him. He found the long sleeved shirt and the jumper that went over the first shirt. Layering himself against the cold. His blue eyes watching Brigit’s face, “Were you looking for me? Or did you just find me and decide to stick around?” He moved closer to her and reached his hand out to touch her shoulder experimentally, “Are you alright?”
“I’ve been really busy-” Brigit stated to explain her long absence from visiting headquarters. Though truly it was something else entirely; she had been reborn so many days were spent with the rebirth itself and then the recovery as she waited her body to cool down enough before coming in contact with anyone else. Then of course she had to process everything she had learned and what she had to do or say to keep up presences which was more confusing than she originally had thought upon learning what had happened and what she was to do. “Came by to see someone else but luckily came across you,” she teased. “I’m just tired,” she replied as she confusingly relaxed under his touch; she had felt a connection with Cyrus back in her most recent past life but now she knew what was done to her to she felt wary of everyone. “Who knew running a bar was so challenging. I also had a few people at the New Year’s event have to take some time off as they recover. Finally feel like I can breathe and take some time for me so here I am.”

How do you feel about the other ouros?

I am conflicted. I have learned a lot since my most recent rebirth so I have the two different set of feelings competing against one another.

How do you feel about rebirth?

It is frightening and quite lonely. You awake to nothing- you have no memories of who you were, what your life was, or how you died. Some are lucky to be triggered soon after waking and that emptiness is filled with memories of your life. But you have to unlock those last memories of your rebirth before you can get the previous memories. It is trickier than many think.
There is a lot of confusion about phoenixes. Which is surprising since we have been hunted and used for our healing but many know nothing. Misconceptions often range from thinking you have all these lives, you get all your memories back the moment you wake up, and you can heal everyone. It is not true. I am happy to be what I am but rebirths aren not fun or easy unless you have someone who cares for you to trigger those memories so you aren’t living this empty life.

“Yeah, that was definitely me when I was younger,” the blonde said with a mild chuckle. Having spent her formative years doing just about any small, tedious job just to make ends meet, her life now seemed like a dream, current hospitalization not withstanding. At the offer, the basilisk simply offered a half-shrug as she settled against the pillows at her back, nerves draining and giving way to exhaustion as the conversation continued. “Honestly, right now I just want a little company for a while. I won’t keep you if you have to leave, but it’s nice to not be here alone.”
“I think it makes us better workers. We have done the hard work and have done the not so great jobs before but are finally where we are happy,” Nova said. At least she hoped Elodie was really happy with her chosen career path and the job she currently employed but from the start of their conversation it seemed like it wasn’t farfetched. “I can stay for a while,” she smiled. “I have to clean my apartment so I am glad to stay for a while. I don’t mind cleaning but my place is in a horrid state right now.”
