Cal was one of those people that had always dealt with people telling them they were too much. They'd always had insecurities over how they looked and the way they liked to dress. There were a lot of people that didn't get it, called them names, and spread all kinds of rumors about them. The theatre community was different and made up of people more like them than a lot of the people in their small suburban neighborhood had been. Cal eventually did find their community, choosing to not listen to what the naysayers were always going to say because they had a community of people that understood. Bobby's comments might not have meant to sound that way, but Cal couldn't help feel that way about it anyways. "First of all, I'd appreciate not being called bro since I'm not. Second, um, I do actually wash everywhere, not that it's any of your concern." Cal backed away a bit. "Third, I'm gay, so I don't really get babes. So if you're going to continue to have that whatever vibe you've got going on, I'd appreciate it if you left me alone." They looked at a their nails, chipping at the blue polish.
Tumblr media
“ seriously? ” they were about the same height, so bobby could confidently say that crop tops would look better on him, which wasn't saying much when he thinks crop tops don’t look good on guys in general. “ do you even wash your bellybutton, bro? you don't look like you do. bet you've got a whole little science experiment going on down here, to bring out the colour of your eyes. ” with a wiggle of his index finger, bobby reaches out to circle around the lower midpoint of conway's torso. then they laugh, thwarting their finger away as if it bounced off some magnetic field. “ guaranteed babe repellent, for sure. ”

STATUS . open LOCATION . party TIME . sometime at the beginning
Tumblr media
Cal liked to think they were good at going with the flow in social situations, which either got them into a ton of trouble or made for really fun stories. They were kind of ready for a new story from a chill party with a bunch of people they liked being around, even if a memorial and a text from G was ruining the mood. Sometimes Cal wondered who they'd been in a past life to have this bad luck. Maybe he should start making an effort to go to shul more often instead of whenever they felt like shit. However, a party wasn't a place they should be feeling sorry for themself or thinking about how bad at coping with death they were. Stop thinking, they kept repeating over and over again. "I shouldn't complain about the weather any more, but I really miss crop top season."

As much as Cal didn't like being at Ogden, being trapped at school was better than the alternative of sitting at home feeling sorry for themself. They felt like they were one of the few people that came back to campus in a better mood than they'd left it last semester, despite sitting at home for the whole break not having a single family member to spend break with or any friends they were on good terms with. The second Cal had gotten an invitation to the party, they had been ready for a good time around a bunch of people, dancing, drinking, and having fun. Which was exactly what they were doing when they heard the voice grumble after the sound of a camera shutter. "Darling if you wanted a photo of me, all you had to do was ask," they said, a rare southern accent coming from his mouth.

it’s the third time kepler sent a text to g, something along the lines of ‘fuck you’. the person who coincidentally checks their phone at the same time, for the third time, would shoot up on their suspect list. not a fool proof method, considering everyone is glued to their phones, but they had to start somewhere and they felt less uncomfortable taking polaroids of someone who had a high chance of being g. the camera is pointed in their direction. but the second he takes the photo, someone steps right into the middle of it. the shutter goes off. the camera whirrs and the photo slides out at the top. “ you fucking idiot, ” he grumbles, in a noticeably more sour mood than usual.

They had always enjoyed a good party back home. They'd thrived in the chaotic nature of a party even if they always ended up in far more trouble than it was probably worth. Cal didn't really know what to do in situations like this. They'd known Ollie before they'd gotten mixed up in way too many bad situations, but this had been a regular thing with between the two of them. There wasn't a drink in their hand as they sat next to Ollie, so there was no excuse not to take him up on that offer. That was a big mistake on their part honestly because now there was no reason to say no other than that being the correct thing to do. Honestly, Cal wasn't sober and with campus being overrun with cops half the time these days, there wasn't a reason to stay sober. "Sure." A dangerous game to play, Cal knew they ought to say no. "Can't hurt." Well it could, they thought, but who's paying attention. "I could say me being here, except I know that's a terrible present." They pulled out a small box and handed it over. "My dad always said that was lucky. I don't know if I believe him considering my luck." The box contained a small coin from France minted in the 1760s their father had found one day. "Who knows, maybe it'll bring you better luck than me."
Tumblr media
Ollie sat on the steps that lead to the upper levels of the house, vape pen in hand as his eyes moved around the people that had come to the party. He thought it was a nice gathering, but definitely not big enough to draw too much attention to the area. As long as nobody was nearby enough to report them, anyway. He glanced towards his side as someone sat down next to him doing a bit of a double take when he noticed it was Cal. "Thanks," Ollie said taking another hit from his pen. "Oh, you know me. I always have fun." He held out the vape pen as an offer to the other, "want some? It's grape flavored." It also tasted a lot like cough syrup, but it was strong enough to have gotten Ollie pretty toasted pretty quick so he wasn't complaining. And then, because he liked giving people a hard time, especially Cal, but only because he liked them, "what did you get me for my birthday?"

STATUS . closed for @claradesouza LOCATION . party. TIME . a couple of hours into the party
Tumblr media
Parties had always fed Cal's more chaotic nature. They always loved a good party and to be the center of attention at them. This wasn't the time to be the center of attention, but Cal was excited to have a chill evening. Or well, as chill as they could get, which wasn't very chill. An excuse to let loose and not sit around pretending they weren't happier when there was a party around was better than sitting at home bored. Parties were exciting and one Ollie threw was great. A couple of hours into the party, Cal squeezed his way into the kitchen. "I'm so glad there's heat in here," they stated with a smile on their face. "I love a good party and an excuse to not wear like fifty layers to keep warm."

STATUS . closed for @charfletchh LOCATION . party. TIME . at the beginning of the party
Tumblr media
It had been so long since Cal had been to a regular type of house party. They'd been to a lot of parties back home that a house party seemed kind of refreshing. Campus had seem like batshit these days. Between Greer and now Penny, Cal wondered if this party was going to be a break for everyone or if they were going to see more shit go down for people. Either way, they were excited to have a night to chill. They'd early on decided they didn't care about society. "Hey, Charlie. Do you wanna go do some shots with me?"

Cal had always liked a good party. They couldn't said their track record of acting calm at them was very high. Most of the time they ended up acting kind of ridiculous, but at least they always had fun at parties which was always the point. Of course once they heard about a joint party for Cal, Mari, and Link, they had already decided to show up regardless of... well every history that they had with anyone there. Of course once Cal saw Ollie, they had to go over and say something. It would be absolutely rude of them not to. They took a seat beside Ollie, twirling their drink in their hand as they sat. "Hey birthday boy. Are you having fun?"

Ogden had always felt small to Cal even on a good day, even before Greer disappeared. It reminded them of the suburb back in Atlanta, where it seemed like the walls were so thin that everyone knew everyone's business no matter how well someone tried to keep a secret. As if there were underground surveillance network that kept an eye on everyone, leaving no one safe from their own secrets. When they moved for work, the city had given Cal a bit more anonymity among people. At least for a little while, then they became famous enough that people could potentially recognize them wherever they went. Ogden felt like the suburbia they had become used to for years. Cal had never minded the smallness of Ogden until it became suffocating.
Bundled up in several layers—it did not matter how long they lived in the north, they would never get used to these winters—they trekked out into the cold to find something to do for the day that didn't involve the feeling like they needed to look over their shoulder. Their walk to grab coffee was cut short by a message—they really needed to turn the google alerts off—and stopped mid-step. Cal did not pay attention to their surroundings until a voice sounded. "Oh, sorry." They moved out of the way a bit. "Yeah, I do." They dug around in their bag and found the lighter, handing it out to Richie. "How can you survive out here? I'm like about to freeze out here."

IT WAS STRANGE TO BE BACK ON CAMPUS, considering the events of the last four months — in his own life and the lives of others — richie was different, but so was everyone else. it was no secret that the students that remained during the fall semester were harmed by events he still wasn't entirely aware of, but it had to be the least of his concerns. that was who richie was, after all. he battled his addiction and came out of it successful ( for now ), and most people didn't have that luxury. richard king shouldn't have had that luxury ... yet here he was, as healthy as he's ever been and now a survivor among other survivors. the people he knew were bonded in ways he wouldn't understand, whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, he still felt more disconnected than ever. regardless, he picked himself back up and kept moving forward, just as he's always done. in the copious amounts of hidden areas around the small college campus, richie's found his favorite spot partially hidden by a cluster of winter rest trees and a fabric covered shrub. so there he sits, criss-cross-applesauce on top of his winter coat — the air wasn't that cold this afternoon, so he opted for his thick sweater instead. an unlit cigarette dangles between his lips, stuck to the dried skin of his bottom lip, awaiting the flame that would wash away all his anxiety. his latest read rests in his lap and captures all of his attention, lost deep in the story. his peace is cut short by a looming figure behind him, casting a shadow over him thanks to the sun beating against his back. ❝ oi, you're blocking my sun ... i'm getting my daily dose of ... photosynthesis and all that shit, ❞ he mumbles confidently, careful not to let the cigarette fall from his lips, then turns around to peer up at the other, squinting at the burst of sunlight around them. ❝ you got a light ? ❞

There were some students that were dealing with Penny's death poorly. Cal had never really known her that well, but when it came to grief, they didn't deal well with it at all. They were trying not to think about it too much since there were plenty of other emotions they were better off focusing on. Cal listened to what everyone around campus was saying, but mostly kept their head down to attempt to not spread any false rumors about the mystery. Cal liked listening to rumors as much as they knew they shouldn't, although they rarely spread them.
Cal needed to not be in their room tonight. Focusing on school was difficult enough as it was on a normal day, this year was awful. They walked around campus for a while, trying to find some type of distraction from their own racing mind. Ogden had become a worse shit show than their life had become. "Actually, yeah, that would be nice," Cal admitted, knowing that it was a slippery slope and not caring in the moment. "Seems like a better way to spend my evening than walking around campus."

cooper !
STATUS: open LOCATION: circa 1762 TIME: early evening
in the spirit of full transparency with himself, cooper had to come to terms with a fundemental truth about himself: he didn’t really care about what had happened to penny. it was probably a shitty thing to admit, but in his mind, it was far shittier to act like the loss was actually tearing him apart inside when he couldn’t give a rats ass about the girl when she was alive and well, much less then. what he did care about was the mystery surrounding the event, the dull whispers he picked up on in passing, the administrations desire to keep things moving, and most importantly, how this was all getting a little too much like his deep dives into reddit for his comfort. conspiracies were far more exciting when he could survey the evidence in his lair bedroom.
so that evening, he decided to step away from his head, just momentarily. it hardly compared to the benders of days past, but as he leaned back into the plush pleather chair that creaked oh so slightly when burdened with this upper body weight, freshly lit cigarette dangling from his lips and a half gone strawberry daiquiri ready to be finished off, he could finally let out a sigh of much needed relief.  ❛ care for one? i’m feeling generous today, help me spend my fathers hard EARNED cash.  ❜

Cal didn't actually like going to records stores like most people who enjoyed music did. They listened to everything online or found sheet music, depending on what they were listening to. Cal had never been one to be sentimental or keep a lot of objects they liked around their place. They had to admit that campus had been weird when they got back from break. Going places they didn't often go was better than trying to get someone to not feel so weird about everything that had happened so far. And it got them to stop thinking about their own trauma. Which is why Cal found themself at the record store, trying to find something interesting to add to their chaotic study mix.
"Yeah, I guess so, but I'm not great with taking photos." Cal stopped flicking through the records and looked up to see Giannina. Eyes flicked with recognition. While they didn't follow her, they knew who she was. They took her phone for a second and snapped the picture. "I hope that turned out okay. I can find another person in this place to take the photo if it didn't." They sighed and smiled at her.

— open starffyer records, late afternoon.
as a musician herself, starffyer records wasn't a completely out of character place to find giannina. flicking through the popular section, gia seemed like she was giving these albums a great deal of thought before she eventually pulled one out. harry's house. bright, warm colour to match the sunlight coming through the window, popular enough to get people talking. it was perfect. she moved to another section of vinyls. specifically, the one near the window with the best lighting. propping her phone up against various objects in the store got some great browsing pictures of her, but none that could properly show off the album without looking way too artificial. ❝            could you take a quick pic for me? ❞ she asked the closest person browsing. ❝ super easy! just over my shoulder focusing on the album, but make sure you get my hair in it too. ❞ tossing her hair to sit over her shoulder as she spoke. ❝ please? ❞

ADDITIONAL INFO:
RELATIONSHIP TO GREER: He actually first met her backstage before opening night of his first play. They had a quick chat then and probably would have thought she was an interesting person
if he could remember that conversation. He was high at the time, trying his best to hide it from everyone around them—and failing at it too. Greer would have been able to notice that in their brief conversation. That was the performance that ended their run on Broadway and was the catalyst for them going back to college. Cal had no idea she was at Ogden and was shocked when they ended up at the same party once. While they mostly ran in different social circles, they did talk to her a few times when Cal ended up going to parties that she was at, but they remained wary of her.  He mostly avoided her though because he didn’t really like her all that much and if there's anything Cal hates most, it's being around people he can't stand.
PLEASE EXPAND ON HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR SKELETON TROPE. Cal has always been the type to know that they’re destined for more. Ever since he was a child, he knew that Broadway was the dream. They wanted to see their name in bright lights, to be up on the stage, and to be known. For them, acting has always been the goal. And though it was a rocky road, at the age of fifteen, he got there—a one off audition when he and his aunt were visiting New York City for the weekend turned into something more. Cal was heading north for a musical. After two shows, Cal started to feel some of those feelings that a ton of child actors feel. Pressure to do better and be better was greater than ever and after getting drunk and essentially sleeping with someone who was their boss and a whirlwind relationship between the two of them (despite his boss being married), Cal went down a bit of a spiral. Parties and drugs—and sure he was eighteen at the time, a barely adult who’d never really had a stable family to begin with, but it was still too much. Everything was too much and it was his only coping mechanism to deal with the way the world around them worked. Calloway was like that for three more years—until their first play. No one knew there was anything wrong then. They wouldn’t have known anything was wrong then. But a few months into their first play—after the first public performance—, Cal came to it so drunk and high that he nearly fell off the stage, couldn’t remember any of their lines, and was a genuine mess the whole show. It was enough that finally someone noticed. Cal went to rehab and then decided a change in scenery would be good for him, which is how he ended up at Ogden. He’s been broken many times, theater is his passion, but through circumstances outside their own control, Cal has only ever been left broken by the people around them. They're a tragedy of Shakespearian proportion. Time away from New York City will do him good though and maybe heal some of those wounds they never had a chance to fully heal from. And until then, they can continue to hone those skills they learned as a child at Ogden.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Queer Alliance, Theatre Collective, Sexual Assault Peer Alliance
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:
trigger warnings — death
Calvin Horowitz was born to two archeologists, which meant they traveled a lot as a child, but Cal was five when their parents decided they probably could benefit from settling down in one place, so they shipped their child off to live with his aunt in the states. Since his parents didn't really get a lot of time, most of their communication was done through an occasional video call and the post cards they sent of every place they'd ever lived. While they did not the most ideal relationship, Cal eventually really liked getting to live in on place, even if they didn't always get along with their aunt.
Their relationship with their aunt was nothing if not complicated. Clearly she didn't want to bear the responsibility of raising a child that wasn't hers. She constantly fought with her sister on the phone when she thought Cal couldn't hear, but they heard about half of them. It wasn't her fault, they knew. Cal threw themself into activities that would let them be out of the house and not be a burden on their aunt. They tried everything from soccer, like so many of the other kids his age, but Cal fell in love with acting when there was a summer program for theatre. They signed up and in almost an instant everyone could see they had talent. Their relationship with their aunt somewhat changed when she realized she probably could capitalize on Cal's talent.
(death tw) One of the worst arguments that Cal got into with their parents was when they had a major role in a musical and their parents promised to come. When they didn't show up, Cal got really upset and accused them of not caring about him. Two days later, both their parents died in an accident and Cal never really forgave himself for their argument, even if it wasn't his fault. Especially since a few weeks after the accident, Cal got a callback from an audition he'd done while he and his aunt were in downtown Atlanta. The guilt didn't stop them from booking the role.
Suddenly Cal's life was rehearsals and trying on costumes. Their first role was a hit and the director, a younger up and coming playwright had the perfect role for Cal. His aunt let him drop out of school and be tutored like other child actors did. They moved to a small shitty apartment in New Jersey and Cal thrived. Their love of theatre only grew, even if it was a tough field to truly do well in. They started becoming more popular, booking bigger roles. It seemed like everything was in place for Cal to succeed in the Broadway scene.
(death tw) For Cal, school was always a struggle. He wasn’t academic in nature, often being called out by his tutors for not paying attention and constantly being a distraction. Acting was the only place they ever felt like they belonged, so that’s where they put effort. Singing lessons, dance lessons, costume fittings and rehearsals. Time was flying and moving slow at the same time. Cal's aunt was proud of them, but somehow they knew their parents wouldn't be proud. So they pushed themself to do better and be better, as a child actor. A week before Cal turned seventeen, their aunt passed away. She’d made plans to moved back home and by then, Cal was earning enough money to live comfortable in the city on their own. But three days before he turned eighteen, she passed away from a heart attack and they were once again on their own. Cal never really dealt with the grief of having lost their parents and now their aunt was gone, they didn’t really know what to do but keep acting, keep their career on track, and act like nothing was wrong because, well, he's a good actor.
Skip a few years later and Cal was in their first play, but dealing with a lot emotionally and struggling with pressure to do better career wise. The last couple of years had been a kind of downward spiral with drugs. Their reputation was not the greatest after it was leaked that they'd been having an affair with the director that found them all those years in Atlanta—a married man. Between the affair and drugs, Cal's career was beginning to feel like it had peaked when they were younger, but directors still wanted to work with them and their agent booked them a role in a play. A bad performance and a decision to leave Broadway for education is how Cal ended up at Ogden. The official story is that he wanted to focus on his education before returning to Broadway. Tabloids long suspected he was a product of child actor syndrome. His agent said maybe a break away from everything was needed and Cal knew that was probably true.
