âYouâre no fun,â she declared in jest, giving a him a look before pushing her sunglasses up and charging ahead (even though he was supposed to lead). âDo you have any idea how exciting food can be?â If done right, eating could be an experience involving all senses, not only a necessity for survival. âArt, even!â Scar added eventually, giving in to the need for additional emphasis.Â
âMy parents have been waiting for a certain Mrs. Jade to make a move, open a little Dutch diner, for all of us to enjoy,â she teasedâ aware itâd never happen. Scar didnât know the aunt personally, but if she had to guess, based on what she had heard, the stern woman wouldnât do anything to accommodate some nosy neighbors. Hell would freeze over sooner. Her parents didnât understand it, but Scar couldnât help but respect it. âCanât imagine you miss spicy, though, I once lost a dare and had to eat an entire bowl of Phaal Curry from the place around the corner. The Hell Iâm headed to after I die, will surely burn less,â savory, spicy and hotâ they had all within reach in Elmerton. Perhaps Scarlett could blame spicy food on her extravagant personality. A thought to be entertained later, surely. Â
âSweet? Maybe after weâre done,â Scar mused briefly, as her gaze lowered to the vile ball of candy in his arms. âMaybe never.â A pair of eyes sparkling with mischief returned to his features before her face broke into a grin. âAw, how so? What happened, are you still thinking about that one fashion article that claimed the Dutch-orange to be terribly outdated? Did teenagers call your taste in music old-fashioned on air? Did Julien say something mean to you?â The brunette kept on teasing, for the most part. If something had truly been bothering the Dutch enough to seek comfort (read: drown) in candy, the chances were it had something to do with Julien, knowing how strong the bond between the two men was. Â
-
â on the contrary, iâm tons of fun. youâre just not looking in the right place for it. â cal punctuated the comment with a slow smirk, one that tugged at the corners of his lips in slight and could have easily been lost against his beard if she didnât look for it. they never met his eyes, though - that sparkle simply wasnât there - as if his mind were too preoccupied at any given moment to even afford something as realistic as that. â i do. thatâs why i like food in general. i donât care if itâs art - i just want it to taste good. it could look like a steaming pile of shit, so long as itâs delicious i donât care. â lazily he trailed behind her, continuing his work on the cotton candy until the puff was reduced to just a stick. heâd cleaned it so thoroughly that there were no light wisps even remaining ---and he tossed the stick into a trashcan as he passed by, never once breaking his slow stride.
â ms. lucas will not be opening up any dutch restaurants. she barely had the time to cook when i was a kid, i imagine itâs less-so now. besides ... i think sheâs starting to consider retirement. last thing she wants is to open a business and cater to peopleâs picky tastes. â jest as it was, cal couldnât see his aunt doing anything so social. she was pricky at best to those who didnât understand her demeanor ---it was part of why he loved her, really. â yeah? i donât strike you as the kind of guy that likes spice? i might surprise you. â with any number of things. his preferred dishes were latin in nature, the marriage of flavor and spice always had him salivating just a little more. he wouldnât oppose one of these tourists staying and opening an indian restaurant, either ---curry dishes he could die for, cuisine that he couldnât fine in elmerton. â sounds like you need to work on that ---getting a tolerance to hot things. i figured you could handle the heat ... â tone light, the teasing obvious, cal even quirked a brow at her back in case she turned to scold him for the comment. and still he didnât drop his cadence.
but when she began the commentary about why he wanted sweets he could only offer a snort. â i like candy and sweets. i donât need a reason to eat them other than i feel like it. â and that was that. there were few things that truly got under his skin (short temper as he had), and dosing himself with sugar wasnât the way he eased out of those moments. the answer was more problematic, less legal in the vein of beating someone to a pulp. to the public eye he had worked on that - reformed. (the truth was less pretty). â dutch orange is ugly. the moment you catch me in any shade of orange or yellow is when you suspect iâm not me. â a beat, he shook his head, grin lingering, â julien says mean things to me all the time. itâs part of his charm. â some people just like sugar. iâm one of them. â

OPEN starter 001: @fortyhqstarterâ đŽÂ where: near the beach when: utp
Regardless of class level, no Elmerton native could help their addiction to the street food, fresh from local vendors along the beach, bringing various cuisinesâ a taste of the world to the vibrant town. âItâs been years since Iâve been here,â in this particular part of Elmerton, to be exact. Quite used to standing out, Scarlett didnât bother blending inâ in her designer outfit, impeccable from head to toe, wearing bright colorsâ but stranger sights had been seen around Elmerton.Â
âAnd I canât seem to find Holy Guacamoleâ taco heaven (tire repair also)? The owner is a mean old man who yelled at me one too many times, but Iâm willing to let it slip for a taco al pastor,â she mused out loud, not ready to give up on her search just yet (Scar had never been the one to deny herself something she craved).Â
âWhatâs your usual go-to?â Scar settled her expecting gaze paired with the brightest of smiles on a randomly picked person before adding for a dramatic effect. âMake it something good, por favor!âÂ
-
if he were truly honest with himself cal had no preference for what he ate. he was much like a human garbage disposal in that regard (which served him well for the three-year visit to a florida correctional facility, where even the slop was knocked back like wagyu steak), though he stayed away from soy - thanks to an allergy. the question required a moment of thought, smaller gears churning in his head before he picked a tuft of baby blue cotton candy from the puff and slipped it into his mouth. â food. in general. iâm really not picky. â
he liked sweets, he liked meat, vegetables as a side ---any and everything was tried once and revisited if it really impressed him. there was little he considered in the way of distaste. but he moved, letting the candy floss melt on his tongue before sliding in another fingerful. â câmon, iâll show you were the tacos are. â tongue wet at his lips, capturing excess flavor of sugar before he gestured vaguely around them. â i grew up on dutch food. itâs savory - stews, homecore, if youâre up with that kind of shit. but iâm really only fond of it when my aunt makes it here. i like spicy food. â and that was the truth ---the hotter the better, it made his tongue come alive.
holy guacamole was at the end of the row, a straight-shot adorned with all sorts of vendors and food trucks that equally vied for the attention of the throng of people passing through it. he hated the tourism - new people were bumbling, confused, rude (but he could be more-so). so he ignored them, turned his attention back to scarlett. â today iâm going to eat my weight in sugar and carbs and worry about the fallout later. â

CAL đ JULIEN platonic / professional / criminal @julienwalcroftâ itâd be easy to consider julien the odd duck in the trio of terror, but cal never saw him as anything but an equal. perhaps he doesnât have his rage, or eliseâs penchant for seeing the scenario from all sides ... but he has drive and mischief and all of the qualities he and elise lack otherwise. perhaps thatâs why they all work so well together. they pick up the slack where others seem to lag behind. youâd be forgiven for thinking that thereâs something romantic going on between the two men, but the reality is that cal and julien are simply so close that their jokes and sarcasm ooze into the lines of whatâs considered standard for friendship. julien is, for lack of a better term, calâs other half ---one of the few people that draw sincere smiles from him, that calm him in moments of blind anger. a brother to him, where heâs lacked family otherwise.Â

CAL đ RAYA @flcwerymusesâ platonic as a young man cal had no problem taking his anger out on anyone around him, including strangers. seemingly reformed from a stint at both juvie and a correctional facility in his late twenties, now cal seeks more humane ways to take out that anger ... and thatâs how he met raya at the gym. unlikely in that cal simply does not seek friendships, but more consistent in their both being there during all hours of the day, calâs come to find some form of likeness in rayaâs drive. over time theyâve chatted a little, shared pieces of themselves ---heâd never tell anyone about his gym friend, thatâs his business, but over time heâs quite come to enjoy rayaâs presence. on days she might not be present he even feels a little lonelier for his 3am workout.

CAL đ ABE @flcwerymusesâ platonic / other thereâs a certain comedy whenever cal and abe meet up. abe, a man of obvious faith, believes that perhaps faith can save cal from his anger and issues. cal, faithless, has no issue with letting abe attempt to recruit him into some form of higher belief ... if only for the moment, as amusement. itâs something of a joke arrangement by this point, where cal finds the new ways for abe to try and bring him into the fold comical, like a little pick-me-up after a particularly stressful day, he knows itâs harmless ... he doesnât understand the place of faithful concern abe is coming from, but so far itâs done nothing but serve as entertaining so itâs fine by him.

CAL đ JUSTUS @flcwerymusesâ negative cal has no patience for drunk morons, and after politely shutting one up at a local bar he ran into a would-be savior in the form of justus. the two got into a scuffle with heavy negative connotations between calâs desire to drink in peace and justusâ seeming need to defend the drunk and obnoxious. thereâs no love between the two of them ---though cal doesnât really consider justusâ existence outside of the moments that he runs into them in elmerton otherwise.Â

đď¸ guess who i just saw at ELMERTON RADIO STATION? CAL LUCAS! donât they look good for 41 years old? they have lived here for 30 YEARS and ARE a DJ. they view the increase in tourism as NEGATIVE đď¸ MICHIEL HUISMAN - CIS MAN - HE/HIS đď¸
trigger for gambling, death, ptsd, violence
STATISTICS
calvin lucas. 41. june 19, 1981. gemini. cis man. he/his. heterosexual. heteromantic. perpetually single. white, dutch-ashkenazi jewish. dutch. raised jewish, nonpracticing. charismatic. focused. independent. aggressive. narcissistic. venomous.
SUBPLOT
elise murphy o'connor, CAL LUCAS and julien have been friends since they were in their twenties and have been committing crimes just as long. elise murphy o'connor is the brains, CAL LUCAS is the muscle and julien? well, theyâre just motivated by greed and adrenaline. elise murphy o'connor is from a family who was known for thieving and swindling, so their behavior was more of a legacy, a family business they continued. CAL LUCAS has always been aggressive and had a need to express their anger. they also like money, so theyâre always down for theft, a robbery, or a scheme - a good excuse to blow off some steam. julien never had to do any of this. they came from an affluent family and were talented enough to make it in the business world but they never seemed to be able to keep themselves from getting into trouble and bring shame on the family. so, they were cut off financially. this meant that julien had to beg, steal and borrow to be able to afford even half of what they were used to⌠so, when they met the other two, they entered into a bit of a⌠gang. theyâve all spent quite a few years in jail over the course of their lifetime, but theyâve not thought of quitting just yet.
BIOGRAPHY
born in north holland, the netherlands to an incredibly middle-class family, for the first 7 years of his life cal lived a relatively normal life. his father was doting but often away from home for work and his mother was less attentive than she should have been, though her true vice was gambling.
his mother had a tendency to squander their savings or paychecks into her vice, spending in big sums to racking up more debt âwhatever small game caught her fancy that required calâs father to dump his hard-earned money into paying off that debt before loan sharks came calling. for a while it worked, and cal was none-the-wiser to the hole that the lucas family was slowly digging themselves into.
at seven years of age he lost his parents. on the way home from his best friendâs house down the road at dusk, he came into his house to the most gruesome and jarring scene he could possibly comprehend: the dismembered bodies of his parents. the night was a blur, the month was a blur, the rest of that year was blocked hard in his memory. details escaping cal, resulting only in the memory of being tossed to his aunt in lieu of the system where he was raised thereafter.
at eleven he moved to the united states with his aunt, settling in elmerton, florida for her work â an awkward child who was socially and emotionally distant, it was difficult for cal to make connections or friends, and though he was an incredibly aggressive child there seemed to be no option to assist in quelling his rage. therapy didnât work - an attempt to dig into his traumatic past only triggered cal into a rage that the even the therapist was not expecting. with puberty came the charm, and slowly over his teenage years cal learned to control his anger into hobbies ---primarily those that consisted in physical contact. it was time that formed his personality more completely into adulthood and had him blooming out of his awkward, quiet shell.
cal blossomed, his personality shifted to something charismatic and utterly charming with quick wit and sarcasm adorning his demeanor, though his smiles never met his eyes. as he grew older it was obvious just how impactful his parentsâ death was, where his initial responses and reactions to the crimes he seemed to devolve himself into, and violence he was slowly being exposed to seemed not to bother him ⌠or quite simply, no emotional response was registered.
twenty years ago he met the two members of his own little gang - elise gave purpose to his rage and though her brains were enough to carry them into wealth in the earliest formation of their group, it wasnât enough to keep each of them out of jail at one point or another. cal, who had a short stint in juvenile hall already, was let off on a technicality. his aunt - a prominent lawyer, had ways of cheating the system she made so much money off of. sheâd do anything to keep her nephew safe, even if he had anger issues. he spent, at most, three years in a correctional facility in his late twenties.
by day, now, cal djâs. music (and photography) were always passions of his and throughout his troubled life he chased the former into a career. you can find him djâing for elmerton radio station ---music of choice being synthwave and like variants.
PERSONALITY
the personality and demeanor of cal lucas is carefully cultivated to deceive those around him, with the most common denominator being that of a charming albeit sarcastic man who always has a smile on his face. he can carry a conversation, crack jokes, find common ground with anyone, but in reality his interest is barely measurable. itâs a farce to project normalcy, to keep any interested minds or eyes out of prying where they donât belong.
in reality heâs a very solitary and angry man, finding solace in his hobbies (which are spent alone) and enjoying time to himself. heâs comfortable in that silence, and seldom reaches out to forge more meaningful connections, outside of the would-be family heâs worked in for so many years.
cal has unaddressed ptsd surrounding the trauma of his childhood. heâs done a lot to lock up the details of the memory of what happened to his parents, and can become aggressive if pressed on the matter or issue.
but the personality most people will experience is that of the charming, charismatic dj whose more than happy to crack a joke at his own expense. itâs part of whatâs kept people off of his back for so many years, after all.
