Lana Del Rey on Religion
āMy understanding of God has come from my own personal experiences⦠because I was in trouble so many times in New York that if you were me, you would believe in God too. When things get bad enough, your only resort is to lie in bed and start praying. I dunno about congregating once a week in a church and all that, but when I heard there is a divine power you can call on, I did.āĀ
āWell, I mixed it with my studies in theology, because it was the best school for the Jesuit faith and all of the Jesuits taught philosophy classes. There was just a lot of talk about going back to that basic question: Why do we exist? How did reality come to be? Why do we do what we do? And how not to become the butcher, the baker, the candlestickmaker, the guardians of the middle-classāthat really interested me. I donāt know. Yeah, I loved being around people who wondered why we were here.ā
āI guess I would say that the beautiful thing about feeling connected to something greater is that even at my lowest point I always have a feeling that Iām being taken care of. ā
āAnd JesusāI mean, being raised Catholic, it was just a way of life. Spirituality and religion were strong. I was in Catholic school until I was 13. Like a lot of other people, I think foundationally I was hymn inspiredāmusical hymns, not Him, Jesus. [Laughs.]ā
āLike so many people, they always state the difference between faith and religion. The faith that Iāve come to find is a science of my own through lots of trials and errors. Iāve been through so many different walks of life that Iāve needed to ask a lot of questions that no human power can answer. Iāve had to seek a lot of guidance. Iāve had to pray a lot because Iāve been in trouble a lot. But itās not until you do that that you realizeĀ there are answers out there to be found.ā
To thine own self be true. Seek and ye shall find. Thereās a science to prayer, I would say. I think sometimes when youāre really faced with a huge life dilemma or problem and youāve turned to every sort of thing for answers, sometimes the last resort is to pray and to put out a question to the universe in your mind. Even when you put your question out there, you ask that invisible whoever āWhat do I do?ā you sort of get answers; you forget the problem all over again.ā
āI went to a Catholic school called St. Agnes and I loved going to church. I was very interesting and curious about the idea of a divine plan and that there was something bigger than us out there. I donāt have a traditional Catholic view of religion or God though ā but I enjoy the feeling of being looked after in the spiritual sense.ā
She attended a Catholic elementary school called St. Agnes, and was the cantor of the church across the street. āI loved church,ā says Del Rey. āI loved the mysticism, the idea of something bigger, the idea of a divine plan. For me, the concept of religion transitioned into a really healthy idea of GodāI donāt have the traditional views of a conservative Catholic, but my imagination was opened within the big blue-and-gold cathedral walls. I liked the idea of being looked after.ā
I would say, āI donāt know whatās going to happen.ā Sheād say, āGod didnāt save you from drowning just to beat you up on the shore. All you really need is patience when you have persistence.ā
āI feel a strong relationship with God and I feel my ties are with him. Thatās how I honestly feel. Everything I do, I do it for somebody Iāve never met before, something in the great beyond. Thatās my primary relationship, really, is with something divine. I feel a connection as real with that as Iāve ever had with anybody on this earth.ā
āThereās one song called āGod Knows I Triedā which has a little gospel feel to it.ā

Goals of the Week (June 19, 2016)
What I have been listening to this week! Itās a long list this week so get some food and listen to some great new music with me.Ā

1. In My Blood - The Veronicas: With all the new releases last week I totally forgot about this one (even though I was looking forward to it). Itās a feel good song that makes me want to dance underneath the stars. Sure itās different from the pop rock sound they debuted with but the times have changed. Maybe itās just the twin thing but it reminds me of something Tegan and Sara would do. Iām feeling it.Ā
2. Heathens - Twenty One Pilots: Of course I had to include this one! I donāt follow this band very closely so I donāt know if this was a surprise release but it was surprise for me. Taken from the upcoming Suicide Squad soundtrack (which sounds amazing btw), the song is a creepy and clever nod to the film. The beat and lyrics are classic twenty one pilots andĀ "just because we checked the guns at the door doesnāt mean our brains will change from hand grenades" might be one of my favourite lyrics of the year. The ending line is also perfect. Iām excited to put this one on my Halloween playlist this year because thatās something I get excited about.
3. Keys - With Confidence: Another favourite of mine this week is With Confidenceās debut album Better Weather. A stand out track is the emotional Keys which really showcases the young bandās talent. The arrangement perfectly captures the sadness and frustration felt in the song. The lyrics are heartbreaking and makes the listener sympathetic for the narrator. Itās a must listen.Ā
4. Good Grief - Bastille: Bastille are finally back with a new single and itās a good one! One of my favourite things about this band is their ability to combine depressing lyrics with a poppy upbeat beat. Danās vocals are as perfect as always while the chorus is super catchy and radio friendly. Iām also loving the promo for it. I canāt wait for the album!Ā
5. Change - Christina Aguilera: With all the horrible tragedies in the news this week, itās nice to have a song that captures all of our feelings. Christina delivers a powerful and moving performance with lyrics that address important social issues such as homophobia, racism and discrimination. There is a sense of hope and optimism that the world needs to hear. The gospel elements really bring it all together. This is a song we need at the moment.
6. Hallelujah - Alicia Keys: Iām really loving this new music from Alicia Keys. Itās simple and shows that she doesnāt have to go over the top to sell records. Here her powerful raspy vocals do all the talking as she basically cries out the lyrics. The hand-clapping is also a great touch.Ā Itās a beautiful and soulful song that sticks with you after it ends.
7. Flowerchild - Coleman Hell: Coleman Hell is a great new Canadian talent that you should really check out. His new song Flowerchild has a great summer vibe that will immediately put you in a good mood.Ā
8. Walls to Build - Kllo: A light easy listen from the Australian duo. The vocals are beautifully soft and mix well with the tropical beat. I highly recommend this one.Ā
9. Are We Ready? (Wreck) - Two Door Cinema Club: Fans have been waiting a long time for new music from Two Door Cinema Club and it finally happened. The song echoes whatās popular in the indie rock scene with a memorable melody and smart lyrics commenting onĀ consumerism and modern society. Itās sure to please fans.Ā
10. You Donāt Get Me High Anymore - Phantogram: Electronic rock duo Phantogramās new song packs a punch. Itās a badass breakup anthem that has a lot of different dynamics to it. I can see this being a favourite on alternative radio.Ā
11. yea, babe, no way - LANY: LANYās back again with another great track! With their typical California sound, LANY conveys heartbreak and nostalgia with a summer backdrop. Itās the perfect dreamy pop breakup song. Ā Ā Ā
What do you think of my choices? I would love to know what you guys have been listening to recently!Ā
