"I know it's normally the kids who like the tours and to press all of the buttons, but do you want to hop on?" Camryn is mostly teasing the woman the question is directed at. "I only ask because I saw you looking over here."

V. What's their biggest pet peeve?

"I have a lot of these, but a more recent one I experienced is someone honking in a drive thru, or right at the exact moment the light turns green. If you're in a rush, I'm sorry, but don't stop for food. Doordash and Grubhub exist for a reason."

Peach 🌸:What song is your go-to comfort song?

"It is a cliche to say it's All You Wanted by Michelle Branch. That might also be my go to karaoke song. I don't go to karaoke a lot, I mean in home karaoke with friends who won't judge me for being off key."

“I have had that done to me, so I wouldn’t ever do it to anyone else.” Even for someone who would take these trails regularly, it was not a fun surprise when she ran out of water and found there were hours to go. This loop shouldn’t take more than two, depending on the number of breaks.

She starts when cued, heading into the start of the trail.

"What made you decide to humor me? You told me you aren't outdoorsy, but here you are. You could've cancelled." With her level of preparation, Camryn doesn't think she was even dragging her feet. "Either way, I promise this one is easy breezy. You shouldn't hate me by the end of it."

"That looks like an hill." It could barely be described as much but she hadn't walked up any hills in a long time. She was used to walking on flat concrete surfaces, maybe a light job to get to the subway. Not trails that had dips, turns, inclines and slopes. "Oh thank god. I would have had us turn around half way."

This was one of the first times in a long time and she knew better than to overdue it and pull something in the process.

"As ready as I'll ever be." She rose and hoisted her bag up, taking a deep breath. "Lead the way."

"Why didn't you put out a job listing for a temporary position?"

Stress on the 'temporary' part of it. Camryn frowns, she can only imagine how Noelle's workload has increased with Liza on leave. "Her having the baby definitely wasn't a surprise, and now you're stressing yourself out. Do you have any past workers you could call in to help under the table?"

It's not ethical, but it'll alleviate some stress.

"Everything's fine on my end, and I really have found my stride with my job. I made a few friends, too, and I have been socializing more. Getting myself out there, it's been really nice."

"How bad does it sound if I say that I'm ready for my niece to come back from her maternity leave? It's been so long since I've been the sole baker and I have been pulling all-nighters some nights just to finish everything. I know I could've gotten extra help, but last time I hired a temp baker she nearly cost me my business." Noelle shuddered at the reminder of all those burnt bakery items being sold and all those bad reviews she got. It was the first time Noelle had to fire someone and she hated she had to do it.

"How're things with you? I'm hoping you're settled in now that it's been a few months."

Camryn's eyes drop down to the exposed span of skin from Peter's shirt, the example presented prompting her to nod slowly with an arched eyebrow, and then her gaze flicking back up to his face. "Now it just sounds like an excuse for you to pop your shirt open." She nudges him back.

"Not that I could blame you, or any of the men. Being buttoned up to the collar would probably feel suffocating at a certain point. It's not why I stick to off the shoulder dresses, but it definitely helps."

She thanks her past self in December for choosing this design considering it's a reused dress from another event.

"They pulled out all the stops for food and decor, they had to cut costs somewhere. Shame, though, I don't go out often. It probably would've been my only chance to see you in action."

"Everyone can undo a couple buttons, baby, that's where the fun is at," Peter jokes with a slight elbow to Camryn's arm, gesturing to his own shirt that was left open at a flirtatious number of four buttons.

"Keeps things breezy. Not that there's decent air circulation anyway. Who designs high school gyms? They're sadists."

Peter takes a drink and shakes his head.

"No. Not that I saw. But they couldn't afford me anyway."

Camryn can’t say she wanted to be dolled up, as Celine puts it. “Would you judge me if I told you I’m wearing the dress I had for the New Years ball?” It was better than shelling out more cash for another dress that will only sit in her closet after tonight. It might be cheap to some of the folks who like to wear all things new and tailored, but to her, it’s practical.

“Thanks,” Cam dips her head in a shy nod to divert her eyes to the floor. She pulls at the fabric of her dress as if to pretend to do a subtle curtsy to hide it. “And you look amazing, too.” More than Cam does, she thinks to herself. “But sure. Lead the way and show me how to throw it back… ‘glam style’.”

"You know you wanted to doll up and be here." Celine said in excited. She was thrilled that Camryn had changed her mind about attending the prom. Not only was a opportunity to socialize, but the two busy ladies would have some fun together -which was insanely hard to do at decent hours with the way their schedules worked.

"And you look amazing! You're in great company. Let's get some drinks so we show these people how to throw it back 'glam style'."

What calms you down?

"A punching bag. I regularly take kick boxing, and if I've had a particularly stressful day, I won't miss it. It helps keep my frustrations in check."

"I was a junior girl scout with every badge but the Cookie Goal badge, because I never cared about selling the most cookies. Thin Mints are overrated. Most of them are. And the most sales I made in cookies was from my mother guilting her friends."

"You don't think the suits and prom-style dresses wouldn't be playing a part in the whole 'sweating hot and heavy' thing?"

It's the first thing that comes to mind only because Camryn is referencing the material of her own dress. If she ended up on the dance floor at all, sweating would be inevitable.

"Country Grammar, that's the album that came out before I graduated. Some tracks were definitely played at my prom, but half of this music I have no clue who the artist even is. Did they advertise needing a DJ?"

"It's too bad they couldn't get me to be DJ -- I'd have this whole place sweating hot n' heavy Nelly style..."

"They're reliable. I really couldn't be more grateful - the last fire chief ran a good team."

All Camryn had to do was fall in stride with them. Learning what each person brought to the table was easy enough with the thorough reviews that the previous chief had filed away, and none of them are less than eager to put their best foot forward. Angel has definitely shown that on more than one occasion.

"Lavender... I can't say I have any idea what it would taste like, even if lavender smells good. At least I know it'll smell nice." And probably be some shade of purple. "Lemon juice, blueberry gin... sounds alright enough to try once. Let's do it."

Cam puts the menu down despite her skepticism about the cocktail of choice. "Or you get that one, and I can order the whiskey hibiscus cocktail, give it to you to try and vice versa."

"There we go! Let them handle Easter while we have a fun time over drinks." Celine said holding up her glass to clink with Camryn. She couldn't imagine how hard the other must have it being the chief of the fire department. Their line of work consumed a lot of time, but she could imagine the chief require her to almost be on the clock. "Hm, I could go the lavender one! What do you say? That one is a good one."

"How did I let you talk me into coming here?"

Apparently, Camryn isn't difficult to convince. This time, instead of Noelle, it's Celine this time around. She'd have assumed it was to keep her company, but she has a date, so at this point, Camryn is already counting the minutes until she thinks she can sneak out and head home.

"This is the second time within six months since I've had to dress up like this. That's two more times than I thought I would."

"What's 'too high'?" Camryn asks, mostly for reference. The hike she chose is a trail that she thinks isn't all to challenging. The entire park is sixty miles, but they're definitely doing way less. "I know the length of it is five and a half miles, but don't worry, it's a loop. It's not five and a half one way, then five and a half back."

She wouldn't be so cruel.

"Stretching is important, but we're going to take it easy. We're taking the moderate trail, and it's hiking only, so no horses to run us over."

Camryn pats her backpack. "First aid, compass, more snacks and water, and everything we need so this doesn't feel like the end of the world. You ready?"

"It isn't that high up, is it?" Romina asked as she sat down and stretched as per a recommendation she was given by Chat GPT when she asked what preparations she needed before going on a hike with someone who was an avid outdoor person.

"I'm thinking this is why I used to wake up feeling like I got run over because I would never stretch or warm up." She told Camryn with a wrinkle of her nose, but also to allow her to know exactly who she was going on a hike with.

When she was ready, she stood up and hoisted her bag on her back. "I've got snacks and water. Nothing for actual survival but I figured you were probably my best tool and you'd have everything. Right?"

"Alright, you're scaring me." Camryn is mostly joking.

She can handle nosy neighbor and gossiping old biddies. When they have time on their hands, who can blame them for finding their own entertainment? Oftentimes, they end up gossiping about each other just as much.

When Robin repeats 'firefighter', there's a tone behind it that prompts Camryn's smile to turn into something slightly more humble. She nods and redirects her attention out to the ocean. "A bad ass. Maybe. I think the wild land work is more so, but I'm excited to take over as chief." A new year, a new challenge, and a new accomplishment.

"Oh boy. Should I expect to have a few be on a first name basis with the crew?"

Robin didn't disagree with her reasoning. If the citizens of Aurora Bay weren't all up in each others business, it would be like a town from a horror movie—where everyone's neighbour was a suspect, nobody left their homes after dark and creepy, old gas station attendants warned you about the abandoned old house.

"Sounds like your mother would fit right in here." Amongst the curtain twitchers and nosey neighbours, a gossiping busy body would fit right in amongst the white picket fences.

"A firefighter?" Robin's brows raised, voice dripping with surprise. "You're kind of a bad ass then." She straightened, giving the firefighter an assessing once over, as if she was just seeing her for the first time.

Robin hadn't pegged her for a firefighter.

"Sucks about the salary cap but congratulations on being the new chief. I grew up in this town and I think you're the first female chief we've ever had." Busy was one word for it, Robin thought. "Oh, I don't know about the tourists but it might be the locals you have to worry about more." @camryn-hendricks

"So I heard," Cam replies. The apartment building she has yet to really pay any mind to. It's a way's off from Aurora Bay Drive, and the firehouse isn't that far inland for it to be a quick drive by. On top of that, Town Hall suffered a fire, and much more, from what Camryn found out.

It's a fortunate thing that was two years ago, and Aurora Bay hasn't been scorned with anything crazy since.

She raises both of her eyebrows in surprise and says, "I'm sorry to hear that. I'm, uh... sure she had a reason. I mean, she put you somewhere you'd be safe, and - I'm not sure what to say about that." Cam laughs nervously. "But anything. Sweet Nothings was kind to help with the cause."

"Alright, alright, I'll just make a big one. You're very humble." Sage teased, letting out a soft laugh. "The firehouse just means a lot because Ocean Crest was on fire a few years ago and the firehouse really came through with helping in that, and I was actually dropped off Aurora Bay's firehouse by my birth mom. Not that I'm trauma dumping, I just mean I got a lot of help from this place so I want to give back."

"It usually isn't until I realize midway that we haven't gone that far and still have a few more hours to go." She remembered vividly how she'd wanted to cry the last hike she'd went on. It felt good afterwards but it was pure hell throughout.

"I think people assume that because I do go to the gym and remain active that I'm good at climbing high altitudes but that isn't the case."

Romina understood the comfort of having a back up and it was why she wasn't rushing back to new-york anytime soon before while she felt a pull there, she also felt one here. There was no real rush when she knew things were waiting at home for her return whenever she decided. "That's good. I hope you don't regret it but it's nice to know you've got a safety net."

"It's nice to meet you Camryn. Maybe one day I'll let you bring me on a hike because I trust you more than half the people I've went with recently."

"I think I'm predictable to anyone who knows me well enough, but there definitely are times where I can throw them a little curveball. The predictably is basically just because of the routine, but the job itself can switch it up."
