Reflection: Utopia Is Creepy
Nicholas Carr’s opinions shed light on the absence of emotion and friction in society as we become more dependent on technology. I agree that both are necessary and aid us with skills, problem solving abilities, and overall fulfillment however I think technology can be applauded for further encouraging these behaviors. While these trends are evident, I also see more of a craving for human interaction which has encouraged abandonment of social norms and development of real-life friendships with people we may have never spoken to whether by choice or chance. For example, websites which group people by common interests helps facilitate meet ups to engage in activities. Additionally, travel groups such as Girls Love Travel, whose platform reaches members globally encourages sisterhood, companionship, openness and communal support which would have otherwise never been found depending on where the members live. Technology has given everyone a platform to be themselves, allowing others to learn more about commonalities they share.

Amazon Essay
Will Amazon start creating their own line of items to be sold on Amazon Prime rather than fulfilling orders for other brands?
Amazon has become successful by facilitating the sales and delivery of many different brands and services. Consumers often check Amazon for their favorite items in hopes they will be sold cheaper than brand’s website or stores paired with free shipping. While many items are marked lower, some are the same if not slightly more. For example, Amazon is unable to mark down recently released Nike shoes and consumers, me included, prefer to buy the item from Nike’s website if they are the same price and also offer free shipping.
Amazon has recently released a line called, “Amazon Basics” which is their generic brand of basic household items. The selection includes a variety of items including but not limited to; ice cube trays, power outlets, work out equipment, bathroom towels and computer accessories. The products are notably of good quality, with thousands of positive reviews. The bulk of their products have 4.5 star ratings and are said to be sturdy, basic, “gets the job done” and of course cheap. Seeing the success of the basics line paired with the popularity of clothing brands they sell, I wondered if Amazon would consider a generic clothing line.
As Amazon continues to be the one-stop-shop for consumers, they have hinted at a private fitness apparel line. Recently, the company released brand manager job requisitions whose job responsibilities will include building authentic active wear. Amazon plans to build its own private clothing brand while satisfying the work out clothing trend as more young women begin wearing active wear as casual wear. Surprisingly, this is not Amazons first private clothing brand step. In the last year they quietly released Society New York, a women’s clothing label as well as Scout & R, a children’s clothing label; while not extremely popular now, both brands are positively reviewed by consumers. I predict Amazon’s private labels will be successful so long as they keep prices low and are creative with their styles.

Air traffic control just got a whole lot tighter. Although there are many obstacles from federal regulation, Amazon is developing Prime Air, a drone powered drop-off service to revolutionize the retail shipment industry. Amazon has even filed a patent for the drone or UAV’s delivery system in which the package would be delivered while the carrier is still in motion.

Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Smart WiFi Router represents disruptive technology that has performance attributes not demanded by existing customers. It’s high price may discourage customers but it’s ability to function more like a computer than a router may sway customer opinions.

In light of having our online class transferred back to an on-campus setting, I explore the benefits of online lectures. Many schools have adopted the technology and seen improvements in both student and teacher performances. Classroom discussions are not hindered as students are comfortable being recorded due to frequent use of technology. Furthermore, professors are more organized with their teaching material knowing the lecture is recorded and timed. Both students and teachers are held accountable and find the tool to be useful for numerous reasons. #ITSoW #onlinelectures
