What are their records like?
Kazakhstan’s Golovkin, who has an unbeaten professional record with 37 wins and 33 knockouts, will put his middleweight titles on the line against Alvarez, whose only loss came against Floyd Mayweather.
Nicknamed ‘GGG’, Golovkin’s last bout was back in March when the 35-year-old beat America’s Daniel Jacobs by unanimous points decision.
Before that, he stopped Kell Brook with a fifth-round technical knockout.
Brook’s team threw in the towel after the Sheffield-born fighter sustained a fractured eye socket in a gruelling five rounds of boxing.
Brook said Golovkin, who is renowned as one of boxing’s hardest hitters, could have blinded him he had landed just a few more jabs.
‘”I told my trainer in round two that my eye was broken and that I couldn’t see so he was aware of what was going on in the fight,” Brook told Sky Sports. “I did want to fight on because I’m a fighter but in the long run, the doctor said if I’d have taken more shots I could have been blinded.,” he added. Alvarez himself is a former welterweight and super welterweight champion who comes into the fight with a similarly impressive record.
