the main reason i wanted to show off redrawing him isn't just because of his body type finally being what i wanted all along, it's because of his face. the scars on the left side of his face partially or completely severed most of the branches of his facial nerve, so i knew i wanted him to have partial paralysis on that side. you can kind of see what i was going for in the original, but after some research and a couple of attempts, i think i got it down.

a big part of Akai's character is that he's disabled. his scars cause him pain, especially those bites where he fractured bone. his right hand experiences such severe weakness from repeated trauma that he struggles with grip strength and had to teach himself to be left handed, and with an injury he receives later in the story, it has to be amputated. he survived a massacre when he was almost four, one where his father and twin brother died in front of him, and that's how he got the claw marks on his face. it might've been self inflicted, but it also might've been his brother. he physically can't remember anything from the event, so he doesn't know.

as a result of the trauma, he developed DID and psychosis, and he was severely neglected by his mother because she couldn't cope with losing her husband and one of her sons. nobody trusted him because of his psychosis, believing him crazy and likening him to a feral dog, but still he became a hero, because even if the public will never like him, he can still save people.

Akai is disabled, he is a system, he is psychotic, and he is my most unambiguously kind and moral character. i hope i can do him justice in portraying him.

so this is actually the redraw i’m most proud of, believe it or not. ever since i got the idea for Miura’s character i knew i wanted them to be fat, and that i wanted to draw them well. my first attempt wasn’t the best, but it was also my first attempt ever at drawing anyone above what people think is average size. i knew that i eventually wanted to redraw it, but my skills weren’t there yet, so that went to the back burner. the more different bodies i drew, the more comfortable i became with drawing body fat, until i felt ready to come back to Miura, and i’m so glad i did.

the difference a year and a lot of practice can make in your art. all but Marumo are third year hero students, while Marumo is a first year.
