bakerbo:
“That’s all that’s supposed to matter right? Being together and being happy?” Bo could vaguely remember the Christmases and holidays of her early years. They had been full of warmth and light and laughter. They had been cold for so many years after her father died, and now again after Logan died. Maybe this year it’d be different because of people like Remy and Karen, but who knew at this point? She shrugged a little at her question. “It’s a good city. The people here are good. I have a decent apartment and a decent job here, so I guess I have to like it by default.”
Tumblr media
“I do believe that is what people say,” Wanda replied, with a smile. “I think both those things are very important. They are what should matter. But it is also a simple view.” In places like this city those times of being together and being happy could be fairly permanent - excluding bad days now and then. In Sokovia the happiness and feeling of community could vanish in the blink of an eye and boom of a explosion. It was tough and harsh. It had been difficult to come to terms with. It truly would be interesting to see how things happened in this city. People seemed so carefree here. Even though there were alien invasions and superheroes, people still went to their daily jobs and complained about simple things, and spent time with their family or went to the park. It was nice, it was refreshing.
Tumblr media
“That is good. I feel the same. I am glad things are going well,” she replied, sincerely. The other woman seemed guarded but genuinely nice. It was good to see that people were landing on their feet here. “I think that liking it shouldn’t just be by default though,” she added, a touch amused. Sending Bo a smile, Wanda then asked, “Are there any places or sights you’d recommend me seeing or paying a visit to? Or any food or coffee places, those are very important.”

the-m3chanic:
“She’ll find you,” Tony said, with nothing but certainty at that fact. If Natasha Romanoff wanted to talk to you, she would find a way, and she had suggested talking to the twins. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind Tony stepping on her toes a little along the way, but it felt weird to him to talk to one of his old teammates and not bring up the potential reconciliation of the group, especially when it had provided him with such overwhelming hope in the middle of everything. “I think it’s what we need, you know? The Skrulls are coming, and we’re better together than apart. The new Panel can oversee us.”
Everything seemed to be working out well. Steve got the freedom he had been craving. Tony got the accountability. It was the Goldilocks balance. It was everything they needed and more. They were together again, and everybody had compromised but everybody was walking away with what they wanted. If Tony could overlook the fact that there were literal aliens preparing themselves to come down and hide themselves away in the faces of his friends and family, then everything was pretty much perfect. He hadn’t felt this content in a long time.
Of course, that was a lie. He was at the lowest point he could possibly be, and there was no doubt that Wanda couldn’t feel that. He remembered M’gann sitting beside him, saying that she couldn’t help but feel the overwhelming despair that rolled off him in waves. The bottom of the bottle was where he had searched for answers for so long, but now it only served to blur his thoughts more. He needed to have a clear mind when the Skrulls came, but seeing Jessica in alcohol withdrawal, remembering his time in the cave with perfect clarity, made him wonder whether there would ever be a time when he would be able to take a break and get himself sober. He doubted it.
Acting as interim CEO while Pepper went and got her life sorted out was another thing that he hadn’t been expecting, and he understood why she needed a break, appreciated that. He was willing to give her the world and more if he could. He wasn’t going to force her to stay – he was never going to do that, even when he probably should have. It was just that he had Iron Man now, and the reconciliation of the Avengers, and the alcoholism (which he finally accepted in his mind was the word he could use to describe it), and there was his problems with his relationships and there was everything swirling together in a whirlpool, topped off with almost crippling levels of guilt.
Wanda, no doubt, could relate. Lagos had been an accident, the same way as Tony’s years not noticing Obadiah dealing under the table had been an overwhelming error that had destroyed so many lives. Lagos had been the catalyst for the Accords, and no matter how much Tony reassured her that they would have came about anyway, he didn’t doubt that there was a part of her mind that wondered what would have happened if she’d waited for back-up, or stopped, or did something different. It was just human nature.
“It will be official,” he said. “A few old friends are talking about taking over the Panel, and I trust them. They know the Avengers are the best ones for the job, that we’re better together than apart. We can do this completely legally, while also being accountable for the actions we take.” It was the most important thing to Tony, even now, that they wouldn’t be allowed to get away with actions like Ultron again. It was important, full stop. “Opinions are always mixed on everything,” he said. “People still call me a warmonger, you know?” Maybe they had a point. “Doesn’t mean we’re going to step back. Once we save the world for the third time, people are going to see that we can do this, that we can be trusted.”
Tumblr media
Tony sighed, leaning back against the counter. “Not much,” he admitted. “Carol and Quill have been telling me a little bit, and me and Thor are going to Asgard to look up his dad’s old tomes on Skrulls. But the basis is that they are very sneaky. They’re not going for an all out assault. They’re going with subterfuge.” Of course, Tony knew how strong spies could be. Peggy could’ve taken down a country in a night if she got the entire agency on her side. “It seems pretty peaceful right now, but who knows. We just need to find out a way to identify the aliens. I don’t know if they can use the people they inhabit to their full potential, if that makes sense. I don’t know if they can take that person’s abilities.”
Ah, and there it was. Already talk of the new Panel even if they were going to put the Accords aside for a while to deal with the invasion. She hoped this wouldn’t turn into a lecture or preach about how the new Panel would help her. Wanda was not an idiot, she was not stupid. Perhaps she didn’t have the education many others did, Sokovia wasn’t know for its schools. But she had common sense. The Panel might be saying one thing on the surface but too much had gone wrong when she had signed up with the government before to even begin considering signing without learning more. And even then it was unlikely she would sign. The governments agenda so rarely coincided with her own. Governments had fought in Sokovia. Police and military forces had been there. The government did not always think about the little people, Wanda would not be coerced into creating another incident like Lagos or into helping terrorise a place like Sokovia.
These thoughts flashed through her mind quickly, but Wanda only smiled and focused on the other parts of his worlds. “With this new threat, I know I will feel better about having the team together once more.” They were better as a unit. Most could handle being by themselves and Wanda would always have Pietro (and apparently Clint, and by extension Natasha as well). The others didn’t seem to have many connections besides the Avengers, and frankly their track record as a team spoke for itself. If this really was a Skrull invasion, and Wanda believed it was, there would be no better team to handle it.
Except perhaps the Justice League but this did not seem the time to mention it. It was better to be on a high and show support for the home team.
More than enough Wanda sensed Tony needed this. Perhaps more than any of them. Despite her assurances she could only truly read Pietro’s mind, even if that wasn’t the case she could just read Tony from how he acted sometimes. Everyone had their problems, Tony more than most. In fact he had more guilt and responsibility on his shoulders than one person should ever carry. If she could help, she would - perhaps just being there for support would be something, though, since Wanda could currently carry no more baggage. Her own issues took up all the space and all her strength. With the Avengers reuniting everyone would once again have a support system, and something to look forward too. A bright spot and people happy to see you should never be underestimated, those things could really positively affect your mental health.
Tumblr media
Wanda hesitated, knowing that panel talk was bound to have come up but not much liking it. “I’m sure your old friends will be a welcome change to this whole thing,” she remarked politely, at least indicating she had heard him. His words were something to keep in mind, but Wanda wanted to keep Panel talk short and simple. She didn’t want him trying to bring her round when differences were meant to be getting put aside for a while. “I am glad it will be official. It will be a... a uhm, a united front, no? It will look good and hopefully be inspiration.” She could hope, at least. People still looked to heroes for guidance, people still dreamed about being heroes themselves. Perhaps a united Avengers team could bring that spark back, make the public see how good they were.
“We can hope that they see we are trying our best and that we come through. Things have been so strange, one bad thing after another lately... People need a break. Perhaps we can help,” she replied, giving a slight smile. She would do whatever she could to help out. The Avengers was where she belonged now. A place to call home - hopefully. The Accords had messed up that view a little, just when she had been beginning to trust and open up to everyone. But the only way to move was forwards, she could hardly go back and the answers to her problems wouldn’t be in wishing things were different. (Wishing she had done something else in Lagos would bring no one back, would change nothing but still the thought and wish persisted).
She nodded her head slowly as he spoke, with no idea who this ‘Quill’ was but Carol she knew. If Tony was speaking off them then they were at least trusted sources. “With everyone together we should be able to come up with something. Though it is scary to know that they can disguise themselves so completely.” She was with Tony on this. The big problem was sussing out who the aliens were. They had no way off knowing. “It is scary to think there may be more in positions of power. It would be good to know their numbers, to know more. But with the team coming together we can at least begin to work on solutions.” They would find an answer. ...They just had to.
“Perhaps it would be useful to talk to other shapeshifters? Kitty has said that there are mutants who can do so. If they can copy powers too then perhaps it would be wise to assume that they can copy powers. Prepare for the bad case scenario and all of that.” It only made sense, really. The Skrull had impersonated Orse so well - even if he was just a human, that it made sense to believe their shapeshifting ability was advanced

madripccr:
SHIELD agents weren’t exactly famed for being warm and fuzzy. Maria, though, was particularly famed throughout the now obsolete agency for being cold and calculating. Where other agents struggled to remove their emotion from missions, Maria never had that problem. She knew, in retrospect, that she wasn’t a robot. She knew that there were times when even she felt the pounding of her heart behind her ribs and was reminded that she was a human, the same as the rest of them. She bled, she cried albeit rarely, but she found it a lot easier to stick to the rules, even if they went against her personal feelings. Procedure, rulebooks, everything that was associated with law and order had been tried and tested by hundreds of people before her.
Nick had been different. He had relied on his own gut, his own instincts, more than anything else. Maria had learnt long ago that he would throw himself on top of a bomb in an instant based on only the vaguest possible notion that it was a dud. He didn’t look at logic or chances or probability; he was a man driven almost entirely by impulse, and that was what had almost gotten him killed on many occasions. If Maria hadn’t been there, behind him and beside him and for all intents and purposes in front of him, there to take the bullets and deflect others, then he would’ve been in the ground long before the Winter Soldier even got the opportunity to attempt his assassination.
Speaking about Novi Grad, about the many missions she had gone on that were now obsolete, distant memories of an organisation that had crashed and burned with her assistance, brought a new layer to Maria that she often either ran from or tried to conceal. She knew with Wanda it was impossible to hide the nostalgia that flooded her senses, although she was a little unsure of the extent of the girl’s powers, her propensity for telepathy, or the magic she could conjure. It was hard for Maria, a woman of facts and science and logic, to piece together the pieces she had seen of the girl in front of her and realise that she was, in fact, a living person just like her. It seemed like a fairy story, like an action movie playing out on a screen that was far too close to life, too close to Uncanny Valley for comfort.
When they found out about the twins, when Maria listened as Rogers divulged to her the meagre points he had picked up about them in the field, Maria had been concerned. It was almost impossible to know the extent of their powers, and as an ordinary human surrounded by enhanced people, she understood why the public was so distraught at the idea of mutants and meta-humans. She understood why they called for the Accords. She had tried her best to summarise it into notes that reduced the unexplainable, but it was nearly impossible.
When they found the twins, Nick had said that Pietro was the strongest, even if Wanda had the more expansive powers. He said that Pietro was the ringleader, the one who pulled his sister into danger, the one that stood up and spoke out. Upon meeting both of them, though, Maria realised that this was one time where she read a person better than Fury did. Wanda was strong; she didn’t bristle when Maria spoke, and her eyes were kind, yet they were far away. She was not tainted with naivety like Nick had originally believed.
Maria watched the twins closely. She saw how Pietro hovered around his sister, how he looked to her for guidance, how Wanda’s quiet confidence guided them through Avengers business. For all of Pietro’s anger and rage, it was Wanda who had gotten them through everything; Maria could see a little of herself in this girl, perhaps, a version of herself that had grown much later in life than Wanda had been forced to mature.
“Don’t apologise for asking questions,” Maria said, and she at least hoped she sounded the slightest bit comforting; she was not a woman who was well versed in warmth. “SHIELD is dead and gone. Stark’s lawyers made sure I could speak about the missions without repercussions. I have no one to protect anymore.” A sad truth, perhaps, but all of her old friends were dispersed amongst various agencies now; what had happened before was long gone. “It was very interesting,” she replied, and then, because she didn’t want to seem as if she was trivialising the human rights abuses that she had been investigating in Sokovia, she added, “and horrific, as well. Seeing what people went through was what pushed me to continue looking into the investigations when others would have given up. I’ve always been drawn to duty, as well. I had a job to do. Nick trusted me to do it. I was going to finish it.”
Tumblr media
She nodded along with Wanda as the younger woman commented on the sudden swelling of the crowd. “Everything grows in size in New York,” she replied. “Nothing stays small for long. It is a good thing about the city, I suppose, that you can just look around and there’s someone who will fight beside you if things go wrong.” Maria had never expected to find herself in a position where she had people she could trust beside her, but the previous SHIELD girls were undoubtedly her friends – and, perhaps, in many occasions, more than that. Sisters, family. The closest she had to it, apart from her adoptive parents.
“Wouldn’t feel right leaving just when things heat up,” Maria replied smoothly. “I’m sure we can handle it, and I can write up a nice report for the Panel.” She would leave Wanda’s name out of it, but that didn’t need to be said. There were only a few occasions when she was willing to bend the rules, and this was one of them. She didn’t trust the Panel, that much was clear. “I believe it might get worse. New York is like Novi Grad like that, but you know that already. One person shouting at the front of the crowd and the entire place will go up in flames. Hopefully we’ll be able to prevent that.”
Novi Grad had not been pleasant. Wanda was under no illusion as to how awful life had been there. However, Novi Grad was still home. Or had been home. Despite having experienced all of the difficulties and strife of living in a poverty- and war-stricken place Wanda had seen good sides too. People with nothing who still offered to help others in need. Groups of people coming together to clean and repair after bombs had hit. People who had taken the time to teach and provide lessons and a school for the children of Sokovia. All little things, and many others that were likely just taken for granted in a city like this but which meant so much more back there.
To hear S.H.I.E.L.D. had known about the issues and rising problem of human experimentation in Sokovia made her pause. She was sure the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents did regret not getting to the source of the problem quicker, but from what she had seen of many agents Wanda couldn’t work out if that regret would be because lives had been ruined (many dead, Wanda and Pietro changed forever) or because they had not succeeded in their mission. Could she hold a grudge against an agency no longer around because they had failed to follow through and uncover just how deep the experimentation went? Probably. Most likely she could get very mad about it, become enraged that the locals were never informed in any way of the danger that could befall them but...  What would be the point?
What would that change now? Wanda had more than enough guilt and grief inside her. She couldn’t add angry and vengeance to it as well. From the little she knew of Maria and how dedicated the other agents had been there was no doubt they had done all that they could. And the twins had been found. Just too late.
Tumblr media
As Maria spoke about S.H.I.E.L.D., about Sokovia in particular. Wanda was curious about more than just Sokovia of course, but at least talk about this was something she could place in her mind. She knew a little about it. She was curious to learn why she kept staying with S.H.I.E.L.D. but it was interesting to hear her speak about staying with Sokovian mission too. Getting her picture on how it was only made Wanda give a nod. Unless you had lived there you never knew the full extent of the depravities that went on there. But Maria knew a little, she knew enough perhaps. And it was sad to hear how she spoke of S.H.I.E.L.D. now being gone. Perhaps it was for the best - secrets could rot, could infect things. And hadn’t S.H.I.E.L.D. been infected by Hydra? At least now things were out in the open perhaps there was a chance to begin again.
Looking around the crowded park, Wanda didn’t see quite the same fire as back in Sokovia. But perhaps that was because the sun was shining down on green, grassy parks. People were wearing bright clothes, and sunglasses. Or hoodies and shorts. People wire milling about - there were spectators. Some people were chanting one thing, another group had some other sort of thing going on. A group discussion almost. Back in Sokovia there had been so much rage and anger. The streets had been filled with rubble, signs of the war that was all around them. There had been military presence everywhere, shots could be fired. Many times tear gas had been released, people were always being injured. And yet above it all the crowd almost moved as one. Their passions and rage united them. The chants, it seemed to Wanda, could have been heard in space they were so loud and powerful.
Back in Sockovia people had chanted for their lives and their freedom.
There was not the same sense of urgency here, protests like this were as much about making a stand as simply passing the news. A protest in Sokovia sometimes meant trying to block the military from taking a certain street or building. There was always an urgent need for the protests there. ...But maybe she shouldn’t compare. The issues here were also important, their urgency couldn’t strip that from them.
Maria was right, in New York things did seem to just be BIGGER. “It is amazing. Quite impressive, no? I can see why that might lead to trouble but it is good that these issues are being heard and gathering a crowd.” Wanda wasn’t so sure about the next bit, at least not entirely. Sure there might be people willing to fight with you. But there’d be many more willing to fight against you. In this city, people seemed to value their own opinions and lives above everyone elses’. That was their prerogative but it was incredibly damaging to others in the city. Super-powered people being named as ‘freaks’ was one example, one that hit very close to home with Wanda. If people knew she was the Scarlet Witch would they come to her aid and fight with her? Or against her?
“A fair point, yes. I can see that. It is good to know you are keeping an eye on it,” she replied, sincerely. Wanda had seen enough violent protests to last her a lifetime. She had little desire to see any more. She shifted only slightly when the Panel was mentioned, giving a nod. No matter what changes were made or what might come to pass she was still incredibly wary. She had signed up with the government before and look how that had turned out. She had seen first hand the devastation a governments agenda had caused - Sokovia had been a constant battlefield, no place left unscarred and that was before heroes with incredible powers. She had never experienced freedom until now either. The Panel may have heroes best interests at heart. ...It also might not. Right now, Wanda could only try to learn as much about the Panel as she could. She wouldn’t risk signing up to anything else again, not without thorough investigation at the very least.
“That is true. It can start off that way. But from what I can see from here things look to be well organised. This is not the first protest this group has staged, I believe they must know some tricks to keeping things under control.” She glanced around again, noting a few groups coming together to prepare their chants. There were still others turning up, and onlookers, but things still seemed relatively peaceful. “I cannot argue that things dont change suddenly. Things might very well take a turn for the worse... But I hope not. It is nice to see a protest in a space such as this, and to realise Sokovia and New York have some things in common.”

“It is nothing fancy. Just bagels,” Wanda remarked as she held out the bag of morning bagels, a slight smile on her features. “Recommended by Pietro - when it comes to food I trust him fully.” The food was just an added extra though, the cherry on top. It was good to see Steve, she could not lie about that. And though maybe there were not many she had a large amount of faith in him. Which was why he was who she turned to when curious or when she had a question. But she didn’t want to dive into the Panel right away. “How are you?”

“I am sorry, I did not mean to interrupt you leaving. It wasn’t my intention to make you stay late,” Wanda said, yet again, as the pair finally left the building. Asking a question relating to her work had only been a way for her to feed her own curiosity, to learn a little more. Wanda wanted to learn everything she could having been deprived for so many years of a proper education. “Can I at least buy you a coffee, to make up for it? Or some tea? I know a nice little tea place nearby.” It was only a small gesture, but it was something. And Wanda liked Diana quite a bit, she was friendly and above all else she was kind - Wanda valued that in a person. “Please. It would be no bother, unless you are in a rush to go elsewhere.”

“I don’t find it surprising.” Stephen inclined his head. “I used to watch doctor shows while I was still practicing. Mainly so I could point out everything wrong with them. But yes, horror is an excellent genre. I’ve read a few horror stories over the years, yet sadly ‘Children of the Corn’ is not one of them. But I will take your word for it as to it being a good story.” He watched her turn the book around, having it flip through pages seemingly of its own volition. Stephen smiled and waved his hand, sending a few more pages flipping so it went to the end of the story. “Don’t spoil the ending for me. I may want to read it myself sometime.”
Tumblr media
Wanda gave smile, torn between amazed and excited as the pages once again moved of their own accord. Or no, perhaps she was curious above all else. “I can assure you the story is well worth a read. I shall not give anything away. Horror stories have a special sort of magic on their first read.” And oh Wanda could be subtle when she had to be, but her curiosity was too great now and she couldn’t help it. “You used to be a doctor, no? But now you can use magic, both are very impressive. I do not know a doctor that ever practised, nor anyone else who can use magic. Where did you learn? ...if that is not too rude to ask.”

who would you like to get to know better?
“Everyone,” she replied, then gave a soft laugh.
“Sorry, that is a uhm, not a real answer is it? I am sorry. I think that there are many people I would like to get to know better. Right now, I only truly know my brother. And even he can be a mystery some days.” She paused, thinking over the question and trying to narrow things down. She wanted to properly answer it, if she could.
“I would like to know Clint and Natasha better.” It was tough, she was a guarded person after everything and had made a lot of mistakes with them, but she would try  hard. “I would like to know Kitty better, and Thor, and all of the Avengers. I would like to know them to work better with them, and to be friends with them.” She wanted to learn more and have FRIENDS, wasn’t that the goal? Loneliness was an awful thing, and something she could feel even though she was surrounded by others. This was partly her own fault. Wanda had to learn to open up to others.

Were you close to your parents?
“I loved my parents, but I don’t know if close is the right word for it. My parents--” she cut herself off, thinking back to it. Really, it was still shocking to her that they were only her adoptive parents and not her biological parents. But for all intents and purposes they had been the ones to raise her and her brother.
“I think they tried their best, but close is not the word that I would use. My mother tried, and I think she loved us. But she had many worries, no? So did my father. They were worried about war, about getting money. Four is many mouths to feed, is it not? Especially in Sokovia. They were worried and tired, there was not usually energy left over for anything else.”
She paused, a slight smile on her features. “But still, there were good days. My mother, she taught me fortune reading and how to read palms. My father, he taught me card tricks. The little things, they do count.” But even then, even before all of the mess it had been Pietro she was closest to.

Bart held his heart, “Jesus The Mist’s ending was crazy good. I did not expect an ending like that, it is quiet possibly my favorite movie adaptation from book to movie. But I think you might be right about Misery’s ending, I’ll have to pick up the book.” He still had a library card somewhere in his room. It had been awhile since he’d been to one to even grab a book before but it wouldn’t hurt to give Misery a look. “You know they’re remaking ‘It’? It never really scared me, made me uncomfortable but ya know not creepy. This new on though looks like it might do better. I could be jinxing it though, or placing too much faith in it but I’m down to give it a go.”
Tumblr media
“I did not expect it either. I think that the shock factor was high, no?” She sent him a smile, then gave a little nod of her head. “It is not huge difference. Just small details, I think, mostly. It was very good, I really enjoyed Misery. ...Though is it strange to love horror?” It was an odd genre to get into, especially King’s works which could get gritty and incredibly dark. The subjects were never things you talked about in polite company. But it had Wanda hooked. “I have heard. I really liked the book of that... it is, uhm, very strange though. I have not seen the old IT. Is it something I should perhaps watch before I see the new one? I am definitely up for giving the new one a go. I do not think I could resist going to see it.”

Shaking her head, she returns the soft smile and shrugs. “Cup of tea, but you were definitely close and yeah, everyone does have their own opinion on things, just look at the news right now with everything. You can be drawn into a whole new world with any kind of genre, it’s just whichever piques your interest.” The Kryptonian muses and licks her lips. “Hm, fantasy and I love musicals.”
Tumblr media
“Cup of tea,” she repeated, amending herself with an amused smile. “This country has far too many strange sayings, I’m afraid I usually tend to get them wrong.” It usually was quite funny, but Wanda wanted to learn more proper American idioms. “That is true. There are so many genres out there, you can have your pick. It is good to see so many different stories and films out there, I have a lot to catch up on.” Her smile brightened and she replied, “I have not really seen any musicals, but those seem good choices yes.”

kitty gave a soft smile, taking another drink of her coffee. “i’m glad he likes it,” she admitted, looking up at wanda. “i like having him around,” she added, though she supposed that much was likely already obvious. it would be strange after all to have a boyfriend she didn’t like having around. she sort of wondered how wanda felt about it all. so often lately a lot of kitty’s time was taken up with pietro - from simply talking with him, to training, to movie or game marathons (though she sort of thought that she paid more attention to the movies than he did, with super speed sitting for so long had to be a nightmare).
Tumblr media
the whole syndicate and panel situation was strange and confusing. it made a lot of people angry, and perhaps had every right to do so. the panel went deep and it affected many people on a truly personal level. it was perhaps wise that wanda did get involved. “i wish i could explain it clearly, but i got quite confused myself. i don’t think i made my best decisions at the time. i pissed a whole lot of people off.” her brother included. wanda had to have gotten a real earful over that, she was sure - signing up had not been wise. in her defence she KNEW that. but it didn’t exactly make things any better whatsoever. “the panel have at least disbanded for now. the accords is still going, i know, but for now there’s so much more to focus on, you know? people aren’t really thinking much about it. is that going to affect the avengers?”
smiling as she took her phone back, she listened to wanda continue. would have REPLIED had things not kicked off. she was pleased to find wanda did follow her, prepared for action. considering all wanda had been through, kitty would not have been surprised had she wished to stay hidden and not get involved. after all, just like with mutants she was something different. (plus there was lagos and kitty wouldn’t place blame or guilt on wanda for that, everyone had mistakes and not everyone could be saved). wanda was stronger than she looked though - or maybe just trying to atone. either way, kitty felt she was a good person to have on her side in such matters.
“we’ll see how much fun it is in just a moment,” kitty replied. “i bet they won’t know what’s hit ‘em though.” as she moved through the street in the direction of the sound - after momentarily getting confused when things seemed quiet - it wasn’t difficult to spot the source of the trouble. goddamn it. as she stopped a bit away from the scene by wanda, kitty hurriedly took it in. there were a few civilains nearby and in the line of fire they would have to look out for. there were three villians, so the odds were in their favour just slightly on that basis. but not by much perhaps. after all, this was shadowcat and the scarlet witch. against these two-bit criminals they could hold their own.
“the one with the fire? that’s pyro, a brotherhood of evil mutants member. or maybe he’s quit, joined some other gang. the others i don’t recognise.” at least it was just the three of them. and she knew pyro’s weakness. the others weaknesses, their achilles heel, she would have to learn as they fought. “there’s still some civilians around. with pyro’s power and the amount of stuff that woman’s knocking about we need to get them outta here.”
when wanda drew their attention, kitty smirked. “i expected better from you pyro. robbing a bank? in THAT outfit!” what she got in return was a serious of curse words from pyro, before he began to advance. but it was the WOMAN who was posing the real problem now, for despite wanda’s words she was getting ready to throw the car.
kitty was already darting forwards even as she spoke. “wanda, keep pyro and the other distracted, i’ll get those people out of the way. aim for his flamethrower, he can’t produce flames only control them.” with that, her sole focus was on the civilians and stopping them from being crushed. she reached them with perhaps a milisecond to spare - the Strong-Woman had thrown the car she was holding, with such strength and ferocity it was incredible. incredibly dangerous. kitty wrapped her arm around the kid and placed a hand on his parent and phased them both just as the car passed through them.
she had SEEN something whilst the car was being thrown, something to do with the woman. she listened as the Strong-Woman called out to her companions, “We got the cash! Let’s GO already, fuckwits”. yes, there it was again. a spark! she wasn’t perhaps a mutant. a cyborg perhaps? the way she moved and how she looked was telling kitty there just had to be something electronic inside her. and if that was the case, she would be easy to take down. but first…
she stood up, ushering the parent and child to their feet. “run, go now. head down that side-street, okay? you’re safe, i promise.” she sent the child a smile, but only a quick glance at the parent who seemed utterly terrified. but at least the woman grabbed her kid and began to run. turning back to the fight, she checked how wanda was doing then called out, “hey, tall, dark and ugly. leaving so soon? didn’t you just throw your get-away car just now? bad move. maybe we can talk this all out, huh?” the woman was turning to her now, moving to lift up the money and leave. but kitty wasn’t about to let her get away so easily– or so she thought. the woman began to run, and kitty had to move quickly to try and keep up. “we’re just getting started! come on, this isn’t how it’s meant to go. we’re meant to get a bit of banter, right?”
“Fuck off, X-Baby, this plan didn’t involve you. You stay outta the way or I’ll squash ya, ya hear me? Pyro– What are ya playin’ at let’s move? We’ve got the cash! These kids are messin’ with the wrong crew, we’ve got the cash–” except they didn’t have the cash anymore. the woman’s strength helped her move quickly, but kitty could move fairly fast too and had cut her off by running diagonally. she zipped past, grabbing the bag of cash and simply phasing that. she didn’t have the strength to keep carrying it, but that wasn’t needed. kitty dropped the bag, then darted forwards. as the Strong-Woman looked to her in surprise, kitty moved in with an uppercut - and hurt her fist. damn, was her skin made of metal?
oh, right. Cyborg-Lady
nursing bruised knuckles, and knowing she had not fully recovered from the syndicate fight, kitty ended it quickly by phasing through the woman. her shrieks were loud, and it hurt to hear - but her tactic worked. the woman went down with a thud as her circuits went out.
Wanda didn’t want a fight, but if it came down to it the guys they were facing would really regret it. She had yet to see Kitty fight but she had no doubt that she was incredibly capable. Pietro had raved about her enough, and she had heard many tales about the X-Men. Granted, not many of those stories and news reports had been positive but none of them had ever claimed the X-Men couldn’t fight or were clumsy in an emergency situation. It would be nice to see Kitty in action, perhaps that would be one of the positives to a fight. The other positive being perhaps she could prove to herself and to others that she was capable of handling herself. Control was difficult, but she would get there.
The trio didn’t look like much, but the fire certainly proved an exciting back-drop. It wouldn’t do to underestimate any of them - perhaps especially the man who was remaining quiet but seemed to have an aura of power. The three of them looked strange, and they certainly were scaring the public. But Kitty seemed confident and had quickly assessed the situation. Wanda tried to do the same, thinking of a plan of attack.
When Kitty mentioned who the middle member, the pyro was, she blinked and glanced at her quickly. The Brotherhood? Weren’t those Magneto’s lot? Turning back to survey the scene she became warier than ever. This sort of thing didn’t seem like Magneto’s agenda, perhaps Kitty was right and they had now broken off. “The Brotherhood I have heard of, but only a little. We need to take them all out quickly, they are causing a lot of damage.” It wasn’t just physical damage to property or people, but they would also look bad in the mind of the public if these goons were not taking care of in a prompt fashion. Heroes (and X-Men in particular) didn’t need any more bad rep.
Things happened in a quick succession, with Kitty darting forwards as she spoke. At the same time, Wanda saw the woman raise the car and start to throw it just as Pyro advanced. There was no time to doubt Kitty, Wanda had to trust that Kitty could protect those civilians. And in order to protect both Kitty and the public she had to move quickly. That pyromaniac wasn’t likely to stop and think about his actions or care that he was about to chargrill three people - one of them just a kid. Summoning her strength, feeling those sparks starting in the pit of her stomach and rising quickly she thought about how she wanted things to work out. The mist gathered around her hands, wispy and blood red.
Her wrists twisted and she jabbed her hands out quickly. Her sight was focused on Pyro and his flamethrower, and the results were almost spontaneously and completely anti-climactic. The flamethrower sputtered and just... stopped working. No flames were being emitted and Kitty was right. Apparently Pyro was no good unless he already had fire to work with - and all the small flames he’d caused had already sputtered and died. Just like the fire he loved, she could see Pyro turning red - with rage and anger.
Wanda spared a glance towards Kitty as she moved forwards, making sure she was alright. Luckily, Kitty’s quick thinking meant the civilians were safe and now she was on to tackling the woman with super strength. That would leave two left, but already Pyro seemed to be searching his suit for something else that might be able to produce fire. He looked an idiot in his outfit, but he was  quite obviously smarter than he looked. The silent man would have to wait until Wanda could take care of Pyro. Kitty had things handled, it was time show that she knew what she was doing as well.
Just as Pyro seemed to find a lighter, Wanda’s hands flicked again and Pyro’s arms were covered in the red wisps that so often covered Wanda’s hands. He gave a cry of pain as, ironically, Pyro ended up burning his hands - she could tell from the way he dropped his lighter and began shaking them. “What the fuck is goin on’?! This ain’t a fuckin’ laugh. You’re tryin’ ta burn me?” He bent quickly, picking up the lighter and flicking it open. Immediately the fire sprang forth towards Wanda - who took one step back and raised her hands to form a shield.
Her mind immediately returned to Lagos, and what had happened there. She know had the fire shielded, pretty much completely covered by her powers and holding it in place. The event was so similar, that for a moment her mind almost went blank. What if the same thing happened again? What if she made a mistake and others were hurt? Others DIED? Pyro was standing before her, ready to shoot another fireball, maybe make a fire creature and so Wanda had to act quick. She had been training for this. She had meditated, she had tried yoga, she had trained with other Avengers.  No one could stand in the Scarlet Witch’s way. Not this time.
Quickly, just as Pyro began to create a dragon from the flames (What the hell was up with DRAGONS?) Wanda sent the trapped fireball back. It had quite a punch to it, the fire trapped within her own shields like force-fields. All she heard from Pyro was an ooft and a ‘BLOODY HELL’ and then he was sent flying. She released the shields, feeling her power taking its toll on and the fire dissipated quickly. Pyro was no longer trying to control it and it was just in the air - unlike Lagos, she had at least controlled it long enough to keep it from anyone. It wasn’t a bomb this time, and they were in a more open space so the circumstances were not completely similar - but Wanda felt accomplished all the same.
Pyro was down, but not out. Striding forwards quickly, she moved past Kitty who had phased through the woman to take her out. Going forwards, as Pyro tried to get up she... kicked him. Swiftly and like she was trained. He was already winded and the fall seemed to have hurt, it was just enough to knock him down again and keep him out of the fight.
Wanda had coped, and it had only taken a few minutes to take down a member of the Brotherhood. Surely that was something to be proud of. But then she... she felt something. Sensed something, that was maybe the better word. Turning around, she moved to quickly stand beside Kitty and look towards the one remaining member of the crew. The silent man, the one whose powers (if he had any) they didn’t know about. ...Well, know they knew.
All around them rubble and cars were beginning to lift. “Telekinesis, he has telekinesis.” Just like she could sometimes use, and Wanda knew from experience how dangerous that was. But it didn’t seem like just telekinesis. A blue mist, not unlike her own seemed to fall on a couple of civilians just behind him and they began to advance. “Mind control. I think, that looks like mind control.”
Tumblr media
She paused, glancing at Kitty. “I can feel his power. It is unlike the others. ...And what about the civilians? How do we subdue them?” Wanda didn’t want to hurt them, this was a nightmare situation for her. How was she going to stop them without hurting them. Maybe her shields but... They had to do something quickl.
