WOMEN OF INSPIRATION. MALALA YOUSAFZAI, EDUCATION ACTIVIST. . Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. She is known for her human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in her native.  Malala was injured on 9 October 2012 by a Taliban gunman when he attempted to murder her. She was unconscious and in critical condition.  Since recovering, Malala became a prominent education activist. In 2013 she co-authored I am Malala, an international bestseller.  In 2015, Malala was a subject of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary He Named Me Malala. The 2013, 2014 and 2015 issues of Time magazine featured her as one of the most influential people globally. In 2014, she was announced as the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. Aged 17 at that time, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate.  In August 2017, she gained admission to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford to study for a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). “The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died, but strength, power and courage was born. WOMEN OF INSPIRATION. HILLARY CLINTON, AMERICAN POLITICIAN. . Hillary Rodham Clinton was born in Chicago and grew up in a middle-class home in Park Ridge, a suburb of Chicago. She has served as Secretary of State, Senator from New York, First lady as the United States, First Lady of Arkansas, a practicing lawyer and law professor, activist and volunteer – but the first thing her friends and family remember most is she’s never forgotten where she came from or who she’s been fighting for. In 1995, Hillary led the U.S. delegation to Beijing to attend the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women, despite being told by some officials not to go. She gave a groundbreaking speech, declaring that “human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights once and for all" - inspiring women around the world. In 2000, Hillary was elected to the U.S. Senate. When Congress wouldn’t do enough for rural areas and small towns, Hillary didn’t back down. She launched an innovative partnership in New York with eBay and local colleges to provide small businesses with tech support, microloans, and training programs to sell their goods online.  When President Obama asked Hillary to serve as his secretary of state, she put aside their hard-fought campaign and answered the call to public service once again. Hillary ran for presidency in 2016 and she became the first woman to earn a major party’s nomination for president, and went on to earn 66 million votes. In 2004, I left my high-flying job with the 3rd largest biotech company in the world to pursue something which I had only a vague idea on. Unlike in the west, where Image Consultants are engaged for Actors, News Broadcasters, Politicians, etc, image Consultancy was not something well known in Malaysia. So I started trying my hands at various areas tied to anything on Image & Style – from selling accessories at Flea Markets, to giving out charity workshops for associations. My big break came when someone from NST attended my workshop and wrote a full page article on my work as an Image Consultant. The rest, as they say, is history. The law of attraction works in a miraculous way. After the newspaper article, more and more people started asking me to conduct corporate workshops. And finally in 2007, Chapter One Asia, a full-fledged image consulting firm was born. Our first office was at The Right Angle of Section 14, a small walk-up office. Life was tough then. Then we shifted over to Sri Hartamas, and dabbled our hands into imported accessories. 2 years later, our team grew and we opted for a 2-floor office at The Strand, complete with our own training room. In 2011, with a dream to educate more Malaysians on the importance of both personal and corporate branding, and to encourage more individuals to venture into the world of Image Consultancy, BrandImage International Institute (BII) was born. Today, BII is the only institution in the world to be accredited by a university and both the Malaysian and British Government. To be able to reach whatever goals and dream you have set on, create small wins. Celebrate your small wins, and your small wins should always be a step towards achieving your goals. WOMEN OF INSPIRATION. AZLINA MOHAMED, 37 YEARS OLD. . In 2009,  half of my body got paralysed, stemming from a series of fever and body ache.  I was hospitalised and was discharged 2 weeks later.  However, a month after that I was re-admitted to the hospital, and this time, my whole body was paralyzed.  What's more devastating was that after both occurrences, my doctor couldn't find the cause(s) that led to me being paralysed.  I had to stay at the hospital for 3 months before I was  eventually allowed to rest at home. I went through major depression and almost lost hope to recover.  It took me 6 years to fully recover after continuous physiotherapy and counselling at the hospital, on top of all the medications I had to endure. My biggest source of strength and courage was the endless, unconditional love and support my family provided me.  I could walk now but the impact from from the sickness was rather permanent.  I am constantly faced with health issues - my back and left foot are in pain; and so are my ears, eyes and my mouth to the point that I had to remove all my teeth. Due to this fragile condition, I had to quit my job to focus on taking care of myself. My doctor advised me to be extra careful with myself and my health as re-occurrence of this sickness would result in me being paralysed permanently. I never expect all these to happen to me; worse - not knowing why it happened in the first place. I am not able to live a normal life like others of the same age and have to deal with my limitations.  Nonetheless, I accept what God has planned for me. Only by cultivating gratitude I eventually expand my internal sense of what is possible, regardless of seeming obstacles and challenges I go through. WOMEN OF INSPIRATION. FIONA GIDEON, 55 YEAR-OLD SINGLE MUM. . I did not choose to be a single mom, it was given to me under certain unfortunate circumstances. It is a sweet blessing though, but with tons of challenges. Being a single mother made me feel uncertain on how am I going to take care of my children and myself. There were times that I wanted to give up. I cried countless of occasions  but I never showed anyone. I had to be seen strong and needed to be strong for my children. With so many challenges in my life – being jobless and my children were still very young when my husband left me; and with my unforgiving bad health condition resulting in me being in and out of hospitals at that point of time, I could have just taken an easy way out, to give up. But instead, I persevered and pursued through thick and thin; and was still able to build my life with and for my children, in hope that one day they are capable to be on their own, being independent. Being in between jobs and trying to raise my children to live well and become contributors to the greater good at the same time is not easy. Making sure that my children are nurtured and supported, while struggling with my own life, without a high level of social and emotional support was and is still a hard experience. I constantly wear multiple hats in different places as I address the concerns of being the provider, disciplinarian, comforter, nurturer while dealing with life challenges on a daily basis. In spite of the challenges, I often make time to find gratitude with what I have and remind myself to focus on all the good I have in my life. Yes, life is a constant struggle but I have no other source of strength but to keep being positive. There’s scarcely any happiness, passion or success without struggle. WAN MUSFIRAH AIMI WAN SUPIAN, 33 YEAR-OLD CAREER MUM BATTLING CANCER. . “I’m sorry, but your breast cancer has spread badly.” These may be the words my oncologist used when he told me that I was now metastatic, but to be honest, I can’t recall them clearly. What I can remember is the emotions - shock, disbelief, and the feeling of doom. I knew that metastatic cancer was a death sentence. Metastasis, the thing that all women with early stage cancer fear, happened to me and I have lived with this for 2.5 years now. I soon realised that “why me�� is an unanswerable question. It doesn’t matter. It was me, and now my job was to live as long and normally as possible, or so I thought. Magically, you rebuild in this new world. You find kindness in people you never knew cared. Their friendship unfurls in front of you like a flag. The years since I was diagnosed haven’t always been easy. Nobody gave up on me, including the most important people in my life – my husband, my 3 boys, my friends, and all the volunteers and professionals who have come into my life ever since. No end date was stamped on me, and progress was always expected. Yes it was super hard, but like a warrior, I got out my gamma knife and radiated it. I was in and out of hospitals more than a human could, but the times I was not, were simple and joyful. Hearing the laughter of my sons or the comforting words from my husband, the sincerest friendship from friends old and new, being able to see a brand new morning every single day and appreciate all the little things around me - those things kept me grounded and LIVE in the moment. You can worry about what did happen or what might happen, OR you can enjoy the present time for the gift it is. The present is where you must live when you have metastatic cancer. The future is only a dream, and the past is vapors. Today is all there is - not only for you, but for everybody that you love.
