A tradition

In peacetime, the ruler grows their hair long. In war, they cut it short. A ruler with long hair is held in great esteem, for defending the peace. The traditional declaration of war is for the ruler to send their cut-off hair to the enemy ruler. The statement carries greater weight the longer the hair: to receive long hair says that you have angered one who is slow to anger, that you have incurred a wrath not easily woken.

After reading the book and becoming, yes, very excited to see its film adaptation, I discovered the controversy surrounding "Me Before You." I have read carefully constructed arguments from both sides, and acknowledge valid points made by the parties involved. I have my own opinions on this controversy, but I will not share them, since as an able-bodied person I feel I am unable to make poignant or relevant speeches about my feelings on the subject. What I will openly admit to having a problem with, however, is the mean spirited call to arms I see popping up encouraging people to harass the actors for this film. Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke are wonderful people who really tried to the best of their abilities to make a moving and powerful film portraying a suicidal quadriplegic and the girl who in an attempt to change his mind about dying falls in love with him. Whether you feel they succeeded or not, it is clear they did not enter into these roles lightly or with the intent to offend. Say what you like about the subject matter of "Me Before You" - I certainly won't get in your way - but please, please, PLEASE stop harassing the actors.
