We’re traveling for work this week and a coworker discovered that I’m ticklish. I had to take him aside and say “yes, I am ticklish. But I also have an exaggerated startle from my childhood trauma and I will react violently if you walk up behind me and grab me. Feel free to tease about other stuff, but being grabbed isn’t fun or funny for me.”

And he just nodded and said “thanks for letting me know” and then didn’t touch me again. Without asking any invasive questions or changing anything else about joking around and chatting. When you travel a lot with people, boundaries get blurry but it’s very nice to be around people who don’t get pissy about being told to back off.
