Hi~ I just found your blog today and I absolutely love it! =D I do have a question about Kevan, what's your opinion of his hand in the walk of shame and his thoughts during it? I love Kevan as a character but find the walk disgusting for too many reasons to count. I don't believe he could have really helped Cersei in any way but I remember how he thought about her being a little creepy. Also how do you think book Cersei will feel about his death?
Thank you so much! I’m not sure I can improve upon @him-e‘s excellent answer over here, as well as this great post where @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly outlines Cersei’s crimes and Kevan’s involvement.
I believe Kevan suggested the Walk to the High Sparrow. If Kevan had instead suggested some lesser punishment, would the High Sparrow have gone along with it? I don’t know; we don’t hear the conversation between Kevan and the High Sparrow. But Kevan isn’t the most imaginative or inventive person, so I think he just went with a known punishment to deal with “grasping” women.
I think Kevan could have done something to help Cersei, even if it was only suggesting a less severe punishment. Kevan’s guilt afterwards suggests to me that he probably could have pitched some lesser punishment and it would have been found acceptable. Had Tywin been the one trying to get Cersei free, I think he would have exercised some form of soft power, done something that wouldn’t have resulted in Cersei’s naked walk. I don’t think that Tywin would have approved of turning Cersei into a laughing stock, because I think in this instance it brings too much shame on House Lannister as a whole.

tywin in the afterlife
tywin: my daughter cersei is queen of the seven kingdoms now...
dead people: ooooh wow.
tywin: she was always my favorite child.
tywin: i knew she'd be the one to succeed in life...
kevan: that's a lie, jaime was your favorite.
tywin: why would be my favorite? he's the dumbest one out of the three...
kevan: he was STILL your favorite.
kevan: i'll concede that cersei was your second favorite, but not your first favorite...
tywin: who asked you, kevan?!

For the Children...
Tumblr media
On the window seat a raven loitered, pale, huge. The bird is white.
Tumblr media
The white ravens of the Citadel did not carry messages, as their dark cousins did. When they went forth from Oldtown, it was for one purpose only: to herald a change of seasons.
Tumblr media
“Winter,” said Ser Kevan.
Then something slammed him in the chest between the ribs.
Tumblr media
What … who … A quarrel was sunk almost to the fletching in his chest. No. No, that was how my brother died. Blood was seeping out around the “Pycelle,” he muttered, confused. “Help me … I …”
Then he saw. Grand Maester Pycelle was beneath his table. Dead.
Tumblr media
“Tyrion?” he called. “Where … ?”
“Far away,” a half-familiar voice replied.
“Varys?”
Tumblr media
The eunuch set the crossbow down. “Ser Kevan. Forgive me if you can. I bear you no ill will. This was not done from malice. It was for the realm. For the children.”
Tumblr media
I have children. I have a wife. Oh, Dorna. “There are … there are hundreds of Lannister guardsmen in this castle.”
“But none in this room, thankfully. This pains me, my lord. You do not deserve to die alone on such a cold dark night. There are many like you, good men in service to bad causes … but you were threatening to undo all the queen’s good work…”
Tumblr media
Ser Kevan tried to rise, but the strength had left him. He could not feel his legs.
“I thought the crossbow fitting. You shared so much with Lord Tywin, why not that? Your niece will think the Tyrells had you murdered. The Tyrells will suspect her. Mistrust will eat the very ground beneath your boy king, whilst Aegon raises his banner above Storm’s End.”
Tumblr media
"Aegon?” He remembered. A babe swaddled in a crimson cloak, the cloth stained with his blood. “He’s dead.”
Tumblr media
“No. He is here. Aegon has been shaped for rule since before he could walk. He has been trained in arms, as befits a knight to be,he reads and writes, he speaks several tongues, he has studied history and law and poetry. He has lived with fisherfolk, worked with his hands. Tommen has been taught that kingship is his right. Aegon knows that kingship is his duty, that a king must put his people first, and live and rule for them.”
Kevan Lannister tried to cry out … to his guards, his wife, his brother … but the words would not come. Blood dribbled from his mouth. He shuddered violently.
Tumblr media
“I am sorry.” Varys wrung his hands. “You are suffering, I know. Time to make an end to it."
Tumblr media
A child emerged from a pool of darkness. Another rose up behind the Grand Maester’s chair. They had knives.
Tumblr media
They were all around him, half a dozen of them…

Hey, big fan of your blog! Following on from your recent post about Kevan Lannister, do you support BryndenBFish's theory that it was him rather than the High Sparrow who had the idea for Cersei's Walk of Shame through King's Landing, getting payback for the way she speaks to him and has him passed over for promotion in AFFC? If so, do you think this will be fully revealed or merely implied in Kevan's POV chapter?
Thanks! Yeah, I’m inclined to agree. It’s not a slam dunk, it could easily have been the High Sparrow–but as you say, GRRM sets up Kevan’s furious anger at Cersei, regarding not only how she treated him but also how she treated Lancel. Moreover, there’s the precedent of Tywin subjecting their late father’s mistress to the Walk; given how thoroughly Kevan idolized his older brother, it would fit if he followed in Tywin’s footsteps in this regard as in so many (hell, he too was Hand…before he, too, was brought low by a crossbow, though the little birds finished Kevan off). For me, this passage points to Kevan as the one behind the Walk:
I have no reason to feel guilty, Ser Kevan told himself. Tywin would understand that, surely. It was his daughter who brought shame down on our name, not I. What I did, I did for the good of House Lannister.
It was not as if his brother had never done the same. In their father’s final years, after their mother’s passing, their sire had taken the comely daughter of a candlemaker as mistress. It was not unknown for a widowed lord to keep a common girl as bedwarmer…but Lord Tytos soon began seating the woman beside him in the hall, showering her with gifts and honors, even asking her views on matters of state. Within a year she was dismissing servants, ordering about his household knights, even speaking for his lordship when he was indisposed. She grew so influential that it was said about
Lannisport that any man who wished for his petition to be heard should kneel before her and speak loudly to her lap…for Tytos Lannister’s ear was between his lady’s legs. She had even taken to  wearing their mother’s jewels.
Until the day their lord father’s heart had burst in his chest as he was ascending a steep flight of steps to her bed, that is. All the self-seekers who had named themselves her friends and cultivated her favor had abandoned her quickly enough when Tywin had her stripped naked and paraded through Lannisport to the docks, like a common whore. Though no man laid a hand on her, that walk spelled the end of her power. Surely Tywin would never have dreamed that same fate awaited his own golden daughter.
“It had to be,” Ser Kevan muttered over the last of his wine. His High Holiness had to be appeased. Tommen needed the Faith behind him in the battles to come. And Cersei…the golden child had grown into a vain, foolish, greedy woman. Left to rule, she would have ruined Tommen as she had Joffrey.
That nagging guilt, comparing “what I did” to Tywin having “done the same” to Tytos’ mistress, the High Sparrow needing to be appeased rather than framed as the instigator himself…I think it all points to Nuncle Kevan putting his niece through the Walk.

Cersei: The Crown does have enemies, we must seek them out!
Kevan Lannister: Oh yes, that’s how it starts, but the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think.

Why does Tywin make Tyrion's trial public? It's a huge embarassment for House Lannister, and implies that the Hand doesn't have his own family under control.
Because Tyrion was accused, in public, by the Queen Regent, of murdering the King. That’s way too high profile a case to be handled privately; the sheer lack of information would lead to wild rumors about conspiracies and plots, and whatever the outcome, there would be people who believed the worst simply because everything was done in private.
By contrast, while having a public trial is embarassing, it allows Tywin to get buy-in from House Tyrell and House Martell for the outcome, to shape the public’s narrative of the death of King Joffrey, to show that the government will uphold the law and punish lawbreakers, etc.

When people debate who built the secret tunnel to Chataya’s, I don’t think enough consideration is given to the fact that Tywin literally has an army of miners at his command who dig tunnels underground for him every day. And the tunnel to Chataya’s doesn’t connect with the Red Keep, it literally comes out in a stable very close by. Tywin’s head engineer probably looked at it and was like, “yeah, we can dig that in a week.” No wonder Tywin had money left over in the construction budget to do the windows in the brothel in red and gold.

I like you, anon. I like you a lot. Among a slew of questions asking me about such-and-such character going mad, or how so-and-so is actually evil, or who is going to hook up with who in twow, or how the books will end, and other asks in a similar vein, you ... you are asking the real questions. The ones that really matter. You’re a gem, and I’m not being sarcastic in the least.
Thanks for making my day. I’m probably not going to get a chance to answer this until this weekend, but your question will be answered.

For all Dany fans who hate Sansa in the show, here’s a reminder that canon Sansa is not a xenophobe turning her nose on Dany and democracy. Instead she is currently learning how to value her lesser born friends as Alayne the bastard, while still fighting for her life and freedom under Petyr’s predatory guardianship.
For all Sansa fans who hate Dany in the show, here’s a reminder that canon Dany is not burning mothers and babies in a power-mad rage. Instead she is currently stranded and lost, without any friends or allies, coming to terms with her traumatic past while still determined to fight for the downtrodden.
These two girls have so much in common, so much fight in them, so much loss and abuse they’re trying to cope with, and so much core goodness in them. Yes, they will continue to make mistakes in judgment, because they are three dimensional characters. But they will learn. Hopefully they will both meet in the books, but will be far wiser and more understanding than their show counterparts. Don’t let the edgy rival bullshit HBO and the writers forced on us make you forget that.

The Lions of Casterly Rock 🦁✨ circa 272 AC, voted for by my patrons! Finally did a portrait of a different blonde family haha! I am very happy with how it turned out! Special thanks to @joannalannister for consulting with me for the entire drawing and for the wonderful idea! It was so fun to draw a different family (though I miss my dragonlords) also fun to draw a Frey for the first time haha. Left to right: Tygett, Gerion, Emmon Frey, Genna, Cersei, Joanna, Jaime, Tywin, Kevan & Dorna Swyft! The portrait is set right before Tyrion’s conception (like RIGHT BEFORE) Also before Tywin lost his hair so don’t @ me 😂

preasoiaf meme | 4 preasoiaf versions of asoiaf characters: tywin lannister
“It fell to Tywin to restore House Lannister to its proper place. Just as it fell to him to rule this realm, when he was no more than twenty. He bore that heavy burden for twenty years and all it earned him was a mad king’s envy. Instead of the honor he deserved, he was made to suffer slights beyond count, yet he gave the Seven Kingdoms peace, plenty and justice. He is a just man.” // lex shrapnel as young tywin lannister

Sansa Stark from the G.Martin’s series. I like an actress from the serial, but imagine Sansa in different way.  Used ref. [warning: may be spoilers] I tried to draw her image from a Joff’s wedding. In particular, you can see that one hair mesh with black onyx. There is a mockingbird sits on her palm as a symbol of Petir because I like the storyline of these two characters.
