1991-1995 Anime Primer Please Save My Earth (1993)
Alice is a sensitive country girl struggling to adjust to city life after her family moves to Tokyo. The pollution and lack of greenery depresses her, she’s a hopeless wallflower and, on top of everything, she must contend with the pranks of her bratty kid neighbor Rin. One day, while seeking some much-needed solace in the school garden, Alice witnesses a dramatic exchange between her classmates Jinpachi and Issei. They explain that their outburst was caused by the strange dreams they’ve been sharing since junior high. In them, they are part of a team of seven alien scientists observing Earth from a hidden base on the Moon. Intrigued by their story, Alice soon has a vivid moon dream of her own, inspiring the teens to search for the rest of their group… unaware of the betrayals and tragedies they have yet to recall. Past and future collide as the memories of the scientists threaten to eclipse the lives of their present incarnations.
Please Save My Earth is a six-part OVA that adapts the first few volumes of Saki Hiwatari’s influential shoujo manga. While incomplete, it is a compelling introduction to the best-selling series, smoothing out the source material’s early roughness to establish a more cohesive dramatic tone. The visuals are sumptuous, with special care taken to preserve Hiwatari’s unique combination of cosmic and floral aesthetics. An emotive score by composers Hajime Mizoguchi and Yoko Kanno adds to the work’s pervading sense of nostalgia.
