This is a commercial that aired during Super Bowl 49. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched events on TV every year, on average a 30 second commercial slot goes for 4 and a half million dollars. The NFL donated this time to an organization called NO MORE, this is a great way to spread awareness for a cause that does not get enough attention. This is especially significant because of all the negative attention being brought to the NFL and professional athletics on the subject of domestic abuse.

Say Something
I have a friend who lives with his brother, sister, and single mother. Recently his mom’s boyfriend has been living with them but no one in the house likes him. His mom has kicked him out and let him back in multiple times which is staring to really frustrate my friend. My friend is especially bothered when the boyfriend acts like he owns the house. For instance i slept over one weekend and he didn't know about it so when he woke up at 6:00 am he woke my friend and me up and lectured me about sleeping over someones house without them knowing even tho he told his mom i was sleeping over. Last week things got heated again and my friend talked back to him and he swung at my friend. When his mom tried to defend him he swung on my friends mom. I told my friend he could come live with me but he said he doesn't want to leave his family alone right now. To top things off when he asked his mom why she refused to call the cops she told him she was 6 weeks pregnant with his child. Even though he doesn't pay any rent or contribute anything she is too scared of raising a fourth child on her own to say anything. I know this is none of my business but i cannot let this go on without anyone saying something. What should i do?

Just to avoid the stereotype that domestic abuse is only an issue in a  heterosexual relationship where the man beats the woman here is another example of a woman beating her wife. Britney Griner (left) pleaded guilty to abusing her wife Glory Johnson (right) earlier this year.  Griner did not serve any jail time and the two are still married. Another instance that has been in the news recently was a case where the goalie for the U.S woman’s soccer team, Hope Solo, was accused of beating up her 18 year old nephew. Solo was acquitted of all charges, served no suspensions from the season, and was not charged with any fines. It is cleat that athletes, or anyone with high social status, is less likely to be punished or held accountable than your average joe.

This is a good look at how professional athletes view domestic violence. When asked about the domestic abuse accusations against him Floyd Mayweather is quick to change the subject and he is persistent in that if there is no visual evidence of him in the act than it didn't happen. When asked what he thinks about Ray Rice’s suspension Floyd states that the NFL has overreacted and that there are probably much worse things that happen in peoples homes that just aren't on camera. With that logic you could say that bank robbers shouldn't be punished when there are murderers walking around. Professional athletes these days are put on a pedestal and think that they can do whatever they want because as long as they are performing well they very rarely will face any consequences.
