Isn't it often so in life? We brace ourselves for the worst, for the jagged edges of heartbreak and and pain and loss. We build our armor for winter’s chill. Pain, after all, is predictable. But joy? Joy is the ambush. Rarely are we ready for how deeply happiness can carve into the soul. The most exquisite moments — rare flashes of goodness and warmth and belonging — they wound us because they show us what is possible, and then they pass, leaving in their wake wounds that never fully scar. There always seems to be blood at the seams. This is a wound that joy alone can inflict — a wound more subtle, more enduring than the bruises of sorrow. There is courage in facing pain. But there is greater courage in letting joy in, knowing it will not stay.
