“Buddy, it’s okay.” Captain America’s voice said in his ear.
“G-get the f-fuck off of me!” Peter screamed and tried to kick the man. Steve didn’t budge but let out a grunt when Peter used all of his strength in an attempt to get away. “I need t-to get to M-Mr Stark!”
“The medics will be here soon.” Was Steve’s reply, but Peter shook his head in denial. He was sobbing so hard it made the simple act of breathing even harder, and he felt so overwhelmed that he couldn’t begin to believe what he was seeing. Tony couldn’t be dead. “You need to calm down, bud. It’s going to be okay.”

the price of freedom is high. it always has been. but do you ever think that for tony the price is different from the price that steve pays. steve rogers fought for the freedom of others. tony stark actually paid a price for his own freedom. and there’s a fundamental difference as a result of it?
yes, in the mcu, steve’s been on the run, but he’s never actually been captured (he was briefly caught by the red skull in the first avenger, which lasts about five minutes compared to tony’s months of captivity)
the compromises tony learned to make - he refused at first to build any weapons for the ten rings, but he learned eventually that he could bend their system to his advantage.
that’s the same underlying philosophy beneath his decision with the accords in civil war.
the price of freedom is high. tony will lose parts himself (he will lose his pride, his dignity, his own beliefs. he will say please to raza and call ross a sir), he will pretend to be someone he’s not, he will lose his family, he will lose yinsen and jarvis and rhodey and the avengers, he will lose his health, his sanity, his own life.
steve believes in standing for something with little compromise. he will stand for the ideals he believes in because it’s right.
but tony, who lived a large part of his adult life believing freedom was fear built on top of weapons only to be betrayed, who walked through miles of barren desert, who clawed his way out of the caves with a promise?
tony doesn’t have to believe in freedom. because he knows what freedom is. he’s bled for it, suffered for it, atoned for it.
for tony stark, the price of freedom is his world and himself.
and it’s a price he’s willing to pay.

stevetony | steve can't look at tony without swooning, so he tries to avoid looking at tony altogether. tony gets the wrong idea.

Steve starts to realise how beautiful Tony really is, and it's causing problems.
Case in point: right now.
The team is having drinks and Steve's the one who can't get drunk, but he's the one with flushed cheeks. It's because he can't stop looking at Tony, who's loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top of his black dress shirt, holding a single malt Scotch and frustratingly unaware of how his hand looks around that cold glass.
"So I'm sitting there and this kid walks in with a pool noodle—"
Tony's animatedly telling an old MIT party story that has Rhodey shaking his head and laughing into his beer, and Steve gets lost in Tony's magnetic field. Tony has the kind of unbelievably easy charisma that Steve never thought he would be attracted to, but here he is, charmed by Tony like he's under a spell.
Tony's eyes are sparkling, Steve notices. Are the lights playing tricks or does Tony just glow? Steve's falling into those eyes from across the room, deep, bright, clever, empathetic eyes that give away Tony's every emotion.
Steve snaps out of his marveling when he realises Tony's gaze is trained on him, his story long told and Clint following up with a party story of his own, one that Natasha seems to recognise from the way she bites back a smile as she sips her vodka cocktail.
There's a dash of good-natured mirth and a little bit of confusion in Tony's face (and his beautiful eyes, eyes like galaxies) and Steve sits up straight, wipes the goofy smile he didn't realise had been on his face and focuses his attention on Clint.
Someone asks, "You got any good ones, Cap?" and everyone's looking at Steve now.
Tony swoops in heroically.
"Hey, remember the one you told me about Dugan? Tell that one," Tony says to Steve, then turns to everyone else, every bit the life of the party. "You guys won't believe it. Dudes in the forties knew how to party."
Steve feels like his heart is betraying his chest and making every attempt at defecting to Tony, because of the way Tony so casually, so charmingly comes to his rescue, but he soldiers through it and tells the story.
Amid the laughter that follows, Steve makes the mistake of looking at Tony again and oh, Tony's smile lines. The way Tony's laugh lights up his whole face, eyes crinkling, perfect teeth showing. Steve wants to tell his story a hundred more times if it means Tony will keep smiling and laughing and God, he really needs to keep himself in check.
Steve has long strayed from Christianity, but Tony feels like religion and sin twisted into one.
The solution seems simple, at the time. If looking at Tony makes gives Steve heart palpitations and makes his mouth go dry, he'll just stop looking at Tony. Easy enough.
It helps a little because Steve is less distracted, but then it doesn't help at all because Tony is unhappy about it.
Case in point: right now.
Steve has been thinking a lot about Tony, and because he's banned himself from looking at Tony, he's turned to drawing him in his sketchbook.
Steve has never had a favourite colour before, not when he was red-green colourblind and not after the serum corrected his vision, but now he thinks his favourite colour might be brown. It secretly makes him happy, because it means he would have been able to see Tony in all of his warmth and gorgeous colours even if he'd stayed colourblind.
He doesn't know how to capture it on paper, though.
Tony has a dazzling haze about him in that way. His skin sometimes looks as rich as olive oil, sometimes glows golden. He has dark hair, dark lashes, dark eyes. Tony should be put to paper in dark colours, but then he loses his warmth. Steve thinks Tony might be magic.
And Tony is so warm—
Steve's sitting on the balcony staring at his sketchbook when Tony himself steps out behind him.
"Hey Cap," he says, and Steve slams his sketchbook closed.
Tony can't know. It'll all be over if he knows.
Steve looks up at Tony and smiles a lopsided smile at him, but Tony looks strangely crestfallen as he slowly sits down next to Steve.
"So," he says, and Steve tries to look anywhere but at Tony. It doesn't really work. "I actually wanted to talk to you about ... whatever that was."
Steve frowns. "What is it, Tony?"
"I thought we were—" Tony rubs his forehead and Steve can't help but follow every movement. He loves Tony's hands, but he never gets to touch them. "I thought we were getting close, you know, getting to be friends. It's been nice. Makes us a better team, and you're a great guy, all that."
Steve doesn't follow, and he must look confused, because Tony sighs and spreads his hands.
"If you've got a problem, I think we're at the point where you can come right out and say it. Just step up."
"I don't have a problem with you," Steve says sincerely.
He's trying to run things through his head, thinking about what he might have said or done over the past few days to offend Tony or make him think they're not friends. They'd gotten off to a rough start, but Steve liked to think that he was starting to fit in with Tony. This confrontation is a little disheartening.
"You—alright, you know what? I'm imagining things. We can let it go." Tony gives him a tight smile and gets up to leave.
Steve watches him go, feeling frustrated at Tony for not explaining himself and frustrated with himself for not knowing what Tony's talking about. He feels like this a lot in this new century, his chest full of emotion and confusion with nowhere to go.
Steve tries even harder to not look at Tony after that, and it's the first time he's run away from a fight. It doesn't feel like him, and Tony isn't a threat or a danger, but he makes Steve feel vulnerable in a strange way. Every time Steve looks at Tony, he feels like someone's gunning for his Achilles' heel.
He goes back and forth on the justification for it. To avoid conflict so the team stays together. To avoid rubbing Tony the wrong way so the team doesn't have a weak link. To avoid Tony as an act of self-preservation, so he can stop the fluttering feeling in his chest and not give Tony another reason to confront him and ask do we have a problem?
But Steve should have known better than to try and out-stubborn Tony Stark.
Case in point: right now.
It turns out to be one of the few failed plans of Steve's lifetime when Tony corners him against the kitchen island one night, walking right up to him and planting his hands on either side of him.
Tony doesn't smell like his usual cologne. He smells like Tony, warm and comforting, the soft side of him he doesn't show to everyone, and it washes over Steve. Steve is still trying to look elsewhere, anywhere else, over Tony's shoulder, at the overstated band logo on the front of his shirt, when Tony reaches out and grabs his chin.
Steve looks into Tony's eyes. They're demanding and mystified and a little bit angry.
This is where it ends, Steve thinks desperately, bracing himself as if trapped in the endgame of a losing war.
"What's wrong with you, Rogers?" Tony demands. "Avoiding me for two weeks instead of just talking to me. What the hell is going on?"
Steve falls headlong into Tony's eyes and he knows he can't lie. He won't run away from this.
"I'm sorry," Steve says first, trying to make the rest of it easier for Tony to listen to. Tony's grip on him loosens. "I ... I've been thinking about you too much. I'm sorry if it made things awkward, Tony. I can—"
"You've been what?"
Steve feels humiliated. "You heard what I said."
"Okay, no, tell me the whole truth," Tony says, eyes wide. "Don't assume I know everything just because I usually do."
"I have—" Steve forces himself to hold Tony's gaze. "I think I have feelings for you. I know it's made things difficult, Tony, and—"
"O-kay," Tony says, a glint of bewilderment in his eyes now. He really isn't letting Steve finish any of his sentences today. "So you've been ignoring me because ... you have a crush. On me. Who you're ignoring. That's how World-War-Two America taught their boys?"
"I wasn't ignoring you," Steve says firmly, then feels embarrassed and nervous again because— "I got distracted every time I looked at you, so I thought it'd be better if I didn't. Look at you, that is."
There's a smile curling over Tony's lips that Steve can't take his eyes off of.
"Uh-huh," Tony says, and Steve suddenly realises how close they are, chests almost brushing. "So you stop me if you don't like this and we'll pretend it never happened."
Heart racing. Shallow breaths. Steve isn't sure if it's him or Tony. It all sounds and feels the same now.
Tony steps in even closer and leans in, and Steve thinks he's going to suffocate because Tony is so beautiful and smells so good and he's so close.
"Stop me, Cap," Tony whispers, and Steve's eyes fall shut. The last thing he wants to do is stop Tony from getting closer, and closer.
When Tony places one hand over Steve's pounding heart and closes the distance between their lips in an earth-shattering kiss, Steve can't hold back a soft moan, thinking heaven can't help me now.
