Difference between a resume and a LinkedIn profile

RESUME/ CV I LINKEDIN PROFILE
A resume is written in accordance with established practices in a particular country. Resumes in each country follow a particular style/ pattern. For example, in Australia, a photograph (i.e. head shot) is not required as part of a resume. As a matter of fact, if you are sending your resume with a photograph to a potential Australian employer/ recruitment agent, you will be seen as someone who does not have any knowledge of the Australian job market. In contrast, if you send your resume (popularly known as CV) without a photograph to a Bangladeshi employer, it will probably not even be read.
As a career consultant, I have spoken to numerous Australian clients, some of whom are also employers or have a good knowledge of the human resource industry. They mentioned [that] it would have been a great advantage if an applicant's photograph was part of a resume, but the Australian culture does not support this. Traditionally, employers have had to wait until an applicant could be physically seen at an interview situation. But again, that was inconvenient, as on an average, [may be] less than one out of 100 applications receive an interview. Time is the main factor .... [Employers are so busy that there is simply no time to schedule interviews for every applicant ..... ]
Complicated situation? You bet it is!
Fortunately, LinkedIn has provided an excellent solution. Almost any LinkedIn profile is accompanied by a head shot.
Does the applicant have a LinkedIn profile? Yes! Great!!! Does the applicant also have a Facebook profile? Even better !!!!
So you can see where you stand .... yes, I am sure you can find yourself in a digital ocean [so to say, if I may?]
How many people understand the consequences of having a LinkedIn profile (and I have also mentioned about a Facebook profile) which has come as part of my research and also to respond to the need of this article. The subject is actually the digital world where we all belong.
Very few people understand the consequences. Their profiles can make them or break them. Yes? Yes, and I mean yes.
Now, again, some people do not publish their LinkedIn profiles with a photograph. There can be many reasons for that. Some business owners prefer not to publish their photographs, rather they use LinkedIn to have a presence there, establish new connections and/ or promote their businesses. Some of them publish their business logos.

Tell me about yourself
Abdur Quaderi
Managing Consultant at Career Design International | Director Music East & YouTube channel Lemontree

Tell me about yourself
Why is this the first interview question (in many situations)?
1) A test of your communication skills
2) A test of how much comfortable/ relaxed/ nervous you appear to be
3) A test of your presentation skills (the easiest person in the world to describe should be is to describe yourself) - how well do to perform this easy job?
4) The amount of time you take to answer this simple question ...
SIMPLE QUESTION? REALLY?
........ :)
..........................................................
..........................................................
..........................................................
For some people an interview is an enjoyable game, while for some people, a job interview is a nightmare ....
WHY?
HOW?
Every interviewer is different and has his/ her own perspective. An interviewer knows how much time should be taken for a job applicant to answer this question. Unfortunately, an applicant does not know how much time should be taken. This interview question is related to few words/ points:
- TIME TO BE TAKEN
- STYLE OF PRESENTATION
- CLARITY IN COMMUNICATION
- NATURE OF THE JOB [THAT IS TO BE FILLED]
- NAME OF THE POSITION
Let me now explain each point in details -
TIME TO BE TAKEN: 'Time is money' as we all know. But when you think about it, how many of us realize the value of time from a business point of view? In the corporate world, it is important to clearly understand that time as a resource is extremely precious and accordingly, it is essential always to make the best use of time. In general, if a candidate takes more than 3 minutes to answer this simple question, the interviewer will probably interrupt or tactfully drive the conversation towards another direction. Most people should take no longer than 3 minutes to answer this question and [trust me] 3 minutes is quite a long time for this question. Notice that I said 'in general' and I also mentioned 'most people'. I must tell you though, that as soon as this question has been asked, the interviewer is really interested to hear the response. Actually, he/she (it may even be a group of interviewers) is/are keen to know about the candidate as much as possible through this [easy, and] opening question. The reason this question is asked is really to put you (the interviewee) at ease. Apparently it looks like an informal question. As a candidate, you may feel comfortable, but don't become informal or talk carelessly. Show that you respect the organisation and that you understand that it is a business environment (i.e. not a social environment). Remember, the interviewer will be asking you a series of questions and one main reason is to find fault (a major fault that you display which he/she does not like). Also remember, this is only the first question, so it is supposed to be an easy one, but really, it's not so easy as it looks like. Basically, using a reasonable amount of time, you need to show that you have a mind that is organised. For that to be demonstrated, your response to this question should be organised, although, apparently the question seems to be too easy. When you reply, you should speak neither too quickly nor too slowly, neither loudly, nor quietly (or softly). Maintain the right balance, but remember to be yourself.
So, what is the lesson to be learned? Be yourself, be formal, be organised and show respect to the business enterprise by making the best use of time.
When I discussed this subject in details with my clients, they asked me directly - 1) How much time should be [ideally] spent to answer this question? and 2) What would be an ideal response to this question? I plan to comment on these matters when I draw a conclusion to this article. Right now let me go back to the questions I stated earlier. It will be a repetition, but the repetition may be well justified.
1) A test of your communication skills
I am assuming that most of you [readers] are already in the corporate world and you understand how important communication skills are. A good communicator utilizes a combination of verbal as well as a non-verbal communication (i.e. body language) to convey messages with clarity and precision. He/she ensures that a message has been properly understood as intended. A reasonable amount of time is spent each time and every time. When you count all of these important factors, most of you will probably agree that a good communicator ensures efficiency as well as effectiveness. Team members are happy when good communicators are around, as they make things simpler for everyone. Often, in fast paced organisations, there are complex information and messages that need to be quickly understood by everyone. Guess who are the people who make things easy for everyone? !!!! I am sure you got the answer by now. Deeply observe one common attribute of effective leaders and you will find communication skills.
2) A test of how much comfortable/ relaxed/ nervous you appear to be
Some candidates do not expect such a question as the first question, probably because it is too easy or because it appears to be a waste of time. Some people even show some dissatisfaction at being asked this question (does this question mean they did not read my resume? or did they lose my resume? after this event, will they ask me to submit another copy of my resume?)
Some candidates are there to get a job that is repetitive in nature or a job that just requires technical work to be completed. Some candidates belonging to these categories know that their communication skills are not up to the mark. They don't feel comfortable in face to face situations or within interactive environments. In this digital age, a new class of people have emerged - they want to have everything done online, they try to avoid all kind of people interaction. This question is an easy one to spot such categories of people. Surely not everyone is a good communicator, however, a minimum standard of communication and interpersonal skills is an essential requirement in organisations, as information has to be communicated, messages have to be relayed and also coordinated at one point (or at several points), there may be emergency situations (so say the least).
3) A test of your presentation skills (the easiest person in the world to describe should be is to describe yourself) - how well do to perform this easy job?
This question is of great importance if you have applied for a role that requires customer service or sales. This is also important for roles that lead to future management positions. Good presentation skills differentiate the people who the organisation will utilize for communication or leadership related roles. If you are competent, talented and ambitious, this 'one' question alone can give you an opportunity to show your true value to your preferred organisation on DAY 1. You may have come across a famous quotation "You never get a second chance to make a first impression". Let me tell you in another way - this is the easiest question that will allow you to make the best impression. HOW? Just keep yourself prepared!
4) The amount of time you take to answer this simple question ...
Just as the morning shows the day, your response to this question will show how much you understand the demands of a corporate environment and your attitude towards efficiency (i.e. proper use of time/ importance of the time factor).

Career planning for seniors
CAREER PLANNING FOR SENIORS This article was published in Brisbane Seniors newspaper during 2009.
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream”. - C. S. Lewis Our socio-economic environment is changing fast, forcing us to adapt to changes very quickly.The main driving factors at the present time are on one hand the worldwide recession and on the other hand a dynamic society dominated by modern technology. Especially with a sudden (recent) change of economic climate, a significant part of the population are quite perplexed. Change or evolution is a natural process in life, however, the transformations that are recently happening around us is a bit too much and it is all happening too quickly.The recession has appeared almost suddenly without giving us a chance to make any preparations at all. Again, as human beings, by nature we cannot change as fast as computers or telecommunications can. I have observed that not only seniors, many other people are struggling to adapt. It is good to see that some seniors have become quite proficient in utilising technology to their advantage, however many are still struggling to keep pace. I came across some smart people who had realised well in advance that they had to get the basics of modern technology under control.These people are one step ahead of others.However, unfortunately, many seniors do not have a plan/ strategy for their future working life. The entire situation has become even more complex with this recession, making career planning an even more challenging task. At a time when the job market is unstable and the immediate economic future quite uncertain, it is difficult to formulate a long-term plan. It is a known fact that with advances in medical technology people are now living longer, therefore the bills and living expenses will have to be paid for a quite a long time.How long.....and accordingly what steps need to be taken? Have we created a long-term career plan looking through an uncertain future? Most people try to avoid these questions because there is a common misconception in the society that 'career planning' is a term reserved for young people. The term actually applies to all who work, capable of working, or have an intention to work for some years to come.So where do we start and what exactly do we need to do about it?
No matter how old you are, if you are planning to work for another 10 years (for example), the first thing you need to do is to use a pen and paper (you may even use a computer if you prefer) and write down your objective. Remember an OBJECTIVE must be S.M.A.R.T., which is an abbreviation, explained below -
S M A R T *1
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Realistic
T = Time related
S = SPECIFIC
The objective must be specific, you will need to think and write down what it is exactly that you wish to do. Be practical and be precise in describing your objective.
M = MEASURABLE
The objective must be capable of being measured. For example, you may state that you wish to work from home doing data entry work and earn $500 per week gross.
A = ATTAINABLE
Is the objective attainable? If yes, that's fine. You must always be positive about your future. Being positive will create motivation and enthusiasm that you will always feel. I am sure you understand how important it is to feel motivated and enthusiastic....Life can be beautiful all the time as long as you are chasing a wonderful dream.
R = REALISTIC
For an objective to be attained, it must be realistic. If you feel that the objective is not realistic, you will never be able to achieve it, simply because in your own mind you will know that it is not realistic, and therefore it is just an impossible dream.
T = TIME RELATED
An objective must be capable of being related to the time factor. For example, an objective should be something like " I will complete my Certificate IV in Training and Assessment by the end of next month". When an objective is linked with the time factor, you have a real task/ assignment to be completed and there is the word 'deadline' attached to it.
Have you set an objective for your next 10 years? If yes, that's excellent! That means you now have an objective that is S.M.A.R.T. In other words, it means you now have an objective that is within your reach. 'OBJECTIVE' was the first word we have discussed about. Now we are going to discuss about the second word, which is 'STRATEGY'. These words really come from the subject MANAGEMENT, which has been my area of specialisation since my university days. Today the subject 'Management' has received special attention and recognition for its practical approach and its utility in systems improvement, people development, business development and profit maximisation. Well, I am not writing a business article now, therefore I will not deviate from my path. My subject is 'Career Planning for Seniors', therefore I will come back on track.
Back to STRATEGY. Think about the word OBJECTIVE as 'what'. For example, 'What do you want'? In other words, what is your objective? Got it? If OBJECTIVE is comparable to the word what, then STRATEGY is comparable to the word 'how'? Basically your strategy will tell you how you are going to meet your objective. So how are you going to achieve your objective? Another subject to think about. Another important project for you to complete. Another project that forces you to think. Both projects, i.e. objective setting as well as strategy formulation require you to utilise your conceptual and analytical skills to the greatest extent. [TO BE CONTINUED]

MANAGEMENT TRENDS
"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure" – Helen Keller
BACKGROUND
Most people in the society want to get a job, because that is the conventional way. Since childhood, most of us have grown up with a mind that is conditioned for employment. Our thoughts, objectives, dreams and subsequent actions were all centered around a 'good job' with a decent salary, one day, sometime in the future.
Having a job simply means having a life that is well defined. The term 'job security' is very attractive to most people. To this category of people, job security means a life that is under their control. A life where they know how much money will be available in their bank accounts each fortnight (or each month). They will be able to formulate a monthly budget and lead a nice life according to a set budget.
Apparently and theoretically having a job seems to be the perfect solution (for most people).
Now, before I proceed any further, I need to tell you a bit about myself. I have been an employee as well as an entrepreneur. I have been in both worlds. I have worked in numerous organisations in 3 continents (the 3 countries were USA, Bangladesh and Australia). Again, I have established a business from scratch, managed and developed the business and survived in a challenging environment for over 14 years.
Other than my own story, I have carefully observed other people's stories. Most of them have been my friends, colleagues and clients. The reason I am writing this e-book is to draw a clear picture of both worlds (i.e. employment and self-employment).
Let me tell you this - having a job in 2003 and having a job in 2013 is not the same thing. Only in the last 10 years, the definition of job has changed dramatically. Due to a variety of reasons, the world has changed remarkably. The background has changed, the environment has changed .... basically a lot of things have changed!
As a Career Consultant I have observed that most people feel extremely good once they get a job. Many of my clients have called me and expressed their satisfaction after they received the job offer. Some of them sent me 3 - 4 friends (i.e. referrals), who became my clients later on.
Being continuously in touch with job market information, I have learned that getting a job is not the end of the story. Let's have a look at some situations -
Pretend that you have a good job and you are feeling that everything is under your control. You believe that you have job security. Now just think about the following scenarios:
1) One fine morning your Manager tells you that your position is no longer required. The company is facing severe competition and is trying to cut costs.
2) One day you receive a letter from your HR Department that states that the management of the company has decided to transfer you to another city (or a remote town)
3) Your Manager indicates to you (directly or indirectly) that you are not performing up to the company's expectations
4) For some reason you are given a last warning (either about poor performance or about undesirable behaviour)
5) One day you come to the office and discover that someone else is occupying your desk. You approach your Manager about it and he/ she asks you to sit in another desk. You are not sure if this situation is temporary or permanent.
These are some examples. There may be many other scenarios.
My objective is not to make you worried. As a matter of fact, I intend to show you the reality of life. Just to tell you that in practical life there is no such thing as job security.
However, if you can create the perfect job for yourself, if you can learn 2 subjects - BUSINESS and MANAGEMENT, you can ensure a good level of job security for yourself. To state simply, this is entrepreneurship. At a later stage, I will explain the required information in greater details.
The first step
This stage is quite simple, however, most people make it very complicated. You need to thoroughly find out the answers to two questions -
Just 2 simple questions
QUESTION # 1 WHAT IS BUSINESS?
QUESTION # 2 WHO AM I?
Being an entrepreneur and career consultant, I have seen the depth of life from various angles. Although having a job is the conventional solution, secretly many people really want to own a business and be their own boss. They want independence, they want flexibility. The problem is that they don't know what to do and how to do it. People who already have a job do not have time to do engage into a new venture. Some people have some extra time, but they do not feel comfortable taking a risk. This category of people view entrepreneurship as an adventure, that has a high probability of loss. In a way I cannot disagree with these people as I have seen so many business failures and disasters. I must admit that although I have survived in this environment for many years now, my business has forever been a challenge and demanded continuous creativity, hard work and commitment.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I have had a busy life with numerous events and lots of variety. Having interaction with a large number of people of various ages and cultural backgrounds, I was able to see the practical side of life. The practical side of life is deeply connected with money, a subject that is linked to the word 'career'. Although entrepreneurs also understand the meaning of the word 'career', they do not use this word too much. They prefer to call it business, a career that they have created for themselves.
The perfect conditions for doing business is not available in general. Not every person is a university graduate, not everyone is 25 years old and not everyone has attended a good business school. I understand you are reading this e-book because you really want to become an entrepreneur. Therefore, I will answer the first question for you in a very simple manner.
For someone to become an entrepreneur, it is ideal if that person is young, smart and attended a business school. But these requirements do not constitute essential criteria. Trust me.
Of course, knowledge is needed, but business requires focus, excellent common sense, quick learning ability, quick decision making ability and the capacity to continuously solve problems. You may wish to add more good qualities to this list.....
Some movies show heroes who have all the qualities that are available. Someone like Superman or James Bond. An average movie viewer laughs and thinks, is this realistic? Is it possible that one person can have so many qualities? Believe it or not, in entrepreneurship, it is desirable that you have all those good qualities (if possible) .....
The more good qualities you can acquire, the more your chances of business success. We are living in an age that is changing extremely fast and knowledge is the key. The good news is knowledge is available very easily.... it is inside your mobile phone .... fully under your control.

Why you need an effective CV
WHY YOU NEED AN EFFECTIVE RESUME/ CV
Everyone has a resume / CV, but how many job seekers have a resume that is accurate, attractive and effective? A resume that an employer/ recruiter enjoys reading?
May be there is one job opening and 200 job applications. The HR Manager has a very difficult job to do. He/ she is a busy person and now the best 4 candidates have to be interviewed. This organisation wants to be fair. The best 4 candidates need to be called in for an interview.
Now, out of 200 resumes, how much time do you think your resume will receive? Will your resume get special attention? Why?
I am not writing as a writer, I have been in the position of a Manager/ recruiter in many situations in my past. I have also spoken to many managers and recruiters, read numerous articles/ books on these subjects and spoken to at least 3,000 job seekers who have been my business clients. I am writing from my own experience.
Usually (and initially) a resume/ CV receives only 2 or 3 minutes of time. It's unfortunate, but it is a reality. In that 2 or 3 minutes, your resume needs to grab the attention of the reader. It needs to stand out. The big question is - HOW? Your job search will become easy if you understand the basics of the subject MARKETING. There is a term called ‘marketing campaign’. Imagine that a company has manufactured a new toothpaste, the name of which is SIMPLE. The company management is very excited about this product as they have invested a lot of money to create a unique product. There is no toothpaste in the market as good as SIMPLE. Now the BIG problem is - how to communicate the features and benefits of SIMPLE to the marketplace? Surely a consumer will benefit by using SIMPLE. The product is really good and the price is unbelievable. But how will the consumer know this important message? Now let me come back to you, the job seeker. You are the product. You are trying to find a suitable employment for yourself. A position has been advertised and you can definitely do this job. I am just giving you an example - you are a university graduate, knowledgeable, can use the mobile phone and internet very easily. You have a lot of friends and you can easily relate to people. You are a good communicator. You are hardworking, very enthusiastic and highly motivated. You want to tell the HR Manager about all of these good qualities, if you get an opportunity. The problem is that you are not getting that opportunity, which is known as the JOB INTERVIEW. The question is - why are you not getting job interviews? There may be many reasons, however, one common reason is that your resume/ CV is not good enough. Unfortunately it is not being read or it it not properly influencing the reader. It must be attractive enough to quickly impress the reader. It has to be a good quality document. A good quality resume/ CV represents your quality. Remember, your resume/ CV is not a just list of what you have done and what degrees you have. IT IS YOUR ADVERTISEMENT. It is your most important marketing document. In other words, it is a document that has been very carefully written, with a view to MARKET YOU. Usually I write short articles, I am not very good at writing long articles. However, I believe this article will have to be very long or at least, quite long.
I have observed that some job seekers prefer to write their resumes/ CVs themselves. Also, in some countries, the practice of getting a resume/ CV reviewed/ written by a professional is almost non-existent. I have performed in management roles in Bangladesh and have also recruited many people. In one way I was fortunate. I wrote my own CV and received good feedback/ results all the time. At that time I never knew I would eventually become a professional resume writer in a foreign country, an English speaking country (i.e.Australia). Now I will have to explain why resume writing is such a common practice in Australia while the same practice is almost non-existent in Bangladesh. There are many reasons. The primary reason is that most job openings in Australia are advertised, while Bangladesh is mainly a hidden job market. Hidden job market? Many people in Bangladesh (and also in many other countries) probably have not come across this term. Hidden job market simply means that most jobs are not advertised. STRANGE, BUT TRUE. For Bangladesh and also for Australia, I am not sure what percentage of jobs are advertised and what percentage it is that represents 'jobs not advertised'. For each country, figures should vary. This kind of statistics are not available. I can only guess ....
Why do you need to speak to a career professional? Because your job search campaign is JUST LIKE a marketing campaign. Your objective is to find the right type of employer for yourself. Remember, chances are very much that there is an employer in the job market who is looking for someone exactly like you. Someone who has the same type of qualifications and experience, skills and attributes. Someone who is willing to accept the same type of salary and agree with terms and conditions that are OK with you. How will you discover that employer? You need to understand marketing techniques and you also have to understand the dynamics of the job market. Think about it - how much money have you already invested in yourself? You are a machine that will make money and if you start counting (like I do as an entrepreneur-manager), you have invested a lot of money already. (YOU means either yourself or your parents). Whey not spend a little bit more to get a good resume/ CV? Remember, this not spending money, we are talking about investing money for your career development, which is a long journey.
True, there is no end to investment for career development purposes. However, you really need to understand which investment is most important.... Let me ask you a direct question - do you need a resume / CV reviewed/ written by a professional? Yes, you do, provided that the professional has a good track record and the service is something that you can afford. Your benefits may be summarized with the following bullet points:
Your resume/ CV will reflect a clear picture of yourself, your skills, attributes and expertise
You should get more job interviews
Your interaction with a Career Consultant will make you more knowledgeable and better prepared
Time spent on your job search should be reduced
You should have a good quality document that will require continuous updating and/or improvement in the future
Remember, the smartest people invest in their own careers. They invest money in continuous learning, career development and self improvement. That is simply the reason why they grow fast.

COVER LETTER
Ideally, every job application should be accompanied by a cover letter. A cover letter should contain a summary of your background, skills, qualifications and experience. In addition, it should specify reasons why your application should be considered. A well written cover letter will influence the employer/ recruitment agent to read your resume. Therefore, a cover letter is essentially a well presented 'SALES' letter.
At Career Design, you will receive a free standard cover letter if you have taken a resume/ CV, which is a minimum of 3 pages in length. A tailor-made cover letter will cost you an extra amount, and this will depend on the position you are applying for.
With an Executive CV, you will receive a standard cover letter irrespective of the length of the resume.
INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES
Just as there are techniques available for everything, there are interview techniques in place - skills and methods that can achieve positive outcomes for you.
Welcome to Career Design for a 30 minute telephone consultation, followed by e-mail correspondence (if required). This is an online service available via WhatsApp to anyone from any country. You will know how to prepare for an interview, how to dress, exactly when to arrive for the scheduled interview and what questions to expect. You will also learn how to present yourself, speak with confidence and impress the interviewer.
