Transformations from language and prices

On a larger scale, there is a clear tendency to identify establishments with names and information in English towards the city centre in the vicinity of the Acropolis. However, the concentration is also evident in Exarcheia, particularly this sector around the square and the blocks designated as Zone 2.

The pattern of establishments with the highest prices (above-average prices identified) follows a similar pattern that also falls in the centre of Exarcheia as a contested territory.

Results with official scraped data

It is evident that the concentration of scraped establishments is located around Exarcheia Square, where the construction of the metro station is expected. There is also a tendency to locate along the route of the future metro line 4 and on the southern side of the neighbourhood, which borders the tourist district of Neapoli.

In fact, the official data show a strip of blocks around the square shifting from the traditional Zone 1 category, which is composed of residential uses and their complements such as retail and local services, to Zone 2, which is more flexible in terms of larger scale retail, which also serves tourism and enables the previously restricted use of hotels (maximum 50 beds in Zone 1).

The official data even establishes a special land use in the square and its sides to enable a more flexible extension of Zone 1 that guarantees its transformation into a commodified and controllable space.

Spatialisation of the scraped information

The information obtained includes the Google Maps location URLs of each of the establishments of the different commercial typologies. With the help of the function ‘get coordinates from URL’, the latitude and longitude data are obtained to geolocate the data obtained.

With the use of the GIS system, the coordinates are converted into points that allow to understand location patterns hand in hand with the attributes belonging to the scraped information.
