Carol Hoorn Fraser, Great Female Artist
Carol Hoorn Fraser, a powerful female artist who wasn’t very well known, was born in Superior, Wisconsin, in 1930. After marrying her husband, John Fraser, they moved to Nova Scotia, Canada where he taught and “Carol became one of the region's most respected and best-known artists, this in addition to her role as teacher, director of the Dalhousie Art Gallery, curator and art critic” (Gallery 78). Fraser not only painted she spent just as much time drawing. Many of her works are inspired by the natural environment that she was extremely fond of. Fraser is known for her work in intertwining and transforming the human and natural forms of the things around her (Gallery 78).
Much like many of the other women artists that we have studied this semester, Carol Hoorn Fraser is likely someone you didn’t know. Fraser devoted most her life to her work, whether that was teaching or painting herself. Finding articles that related to her and her work was quite difficult, a co-worker of mine who has studied art history previously and read several books solely related to art history didn’t even know who she was. Having so few articles to read about her has only made me question her life more. Much of her work that I’ve show has been mainly floral pieces, but she has such a range of art work. There is such depth to her pictures that just make you wonder what was going on in her life to have painted these images.
Much like Judy Chicago, Carol Hoorn Fraser was painting at a time that didn’t truly want to share the spotlight with women. In the 1950s when Fraser was painting the most it was what people would consider a man’s world. Much like all the other female artists that we’ve studied, Fraser fought for her spot in history and should be remembered with all other great female artists. Her work shows her range of character and just how strong of an artist she was. So without further delay here’s a look into what I believe are some of Carol Hoorn Fraser’s best paintings.
