Did akello, Marcel and his family celebrate juneteenth? Like going to festivals/parades or a BBQ?

BIG YES. Akello's always been pretty involved with his community- his living situation now is incredibly isolating and alien to him given how important that support network has been to him in the past. Akello grew up attending a predominantly black church and when he moved + started his own family he wanted to make sure Marcel could benefit from the same kind of tight-knit community and cultural exposure.

Juneteenth bbqs were usually big, over-the-top affairs that Akello and the other church dads would swear they'd keep lowkey but then inevitably turn into a multineighborhood block party type deal. It would start with reserving a gazebo + pit bbq at the county park or reserving the community pool at the YCMA or something, but then other churches and neighbors would hear about it and then offer to pool resources and join in. Pretty much everyone who showed up brought food, someone always knew someone who had a small band who would offer to play, one year they hired the neighborhood ice cream truck guy to hang out and give ice cream to the kids for a couple hours (big hit). Eventually, a BBQ meant for about 30-50 people would have turnouts over 100. Akello always volunteered Marcel for help too and usually had to help wrangle the little kids when it was time for food, even while Akello + his wife scrambled to keep things organized.

While the behind-the-scenes stuff was always a chaotic nightmare, these gatherings typically went off without a hitch and with great success (ofc not all of this was Akello's doing, but he IS very good at organization and you can still talk him into pushing the limits of what's feasible). So for a long time this was a yearly thing and with the divorce and the demon deal kinda shaking up Akello's world, I think he'd be pretty eager to get back to doing this kind of event regularly again. For Marcel and his Mom's part, they still participate though with losing Akello, they've taken a small step back from organization responsibilities for the time being.
