Cash chuckled ever so slightly at the boy’s curiosity and crouched as best as he could.
“My family and I went to this town close by to bury my Ma. It was a real tricky quest.”
Cash didn’t mind the questions.  He had grown accustomed to stares, especially those of children, but seldom did they actually ask.
“I do miss it.  I’m a carpenter.  I build things.  I like balance. But I can’t balance no more.”
His sentences were short and, he hoped, easy to follow.  He always spoke that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“ Oh… I’m sorry. Do you miss your leg? “ Of course he did, but it seemed the right thing to ask or to say to continue the conversation. Since, Prince had already started talking about the missing leg, he might as well continue on. Still staring down at the missing leg, the Little Prince very cautiously reached out a curious hand to gently poke at the stub.
“ Why were you crossing the river? Were you exploring? Were you trying to get somewhere special? “

Cash couldn’t hold back a chuckle at the comment and he looked down at the missing place his leg once was.
“Well, you see. My siblins and I crossed a real mighty river and my leg didn’t like it none. It was real broken and we did what we could but it just didn’t want to stay put no more.”
He wondered if he should have answered with a fake answer.  The one about the snake.  The boy did, indeed, begin to remind him of his brother.
“It don’t hurt no more if you want to touch it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“ … Why do you only have one leg? “ It wasn’t spoken in the judgmental cruel tone of someone who wished to tease or taunt the misfortune of another. It was rather more so… curious and confused. The Little Prince had never seen anyone with only one leg before. What did it mean? Was he only born with one leg?
“ Did a snake eat it? “ As he spoken, Prince bent down to collect the crutch and hand it back over to the man. As he’d bent down, Prince carefully examined the space where the leg should be as if willing it to exist.

Cash leaned against his crutches heavily in the blaring summer heat.  He felt his sweat trickle down the stump of his leg, soaking the bottom of his pants that had been pinned up.  Of course itching it would only cause him to lose balance.
He counted as he often did to work through the tickling sensation, to focus his mind elsewhere.
One.  Two.  Three. Four.  Five. Si-
His internal counting was cut off when he saw him.  His first thought was “Vardaman” but then he noticed the yellow haired child wasn’t his brother.  Far from it.
He accidentally dropped one of the crutches.
THUD.
“I’m sorry, there.  Didn’t mean to frighten you none.”
His voice was methodical, slow, as if he thought out each word before speaking.

“My sister’s got some problems with ‘im so he didn’t want to help me none.”
Cash confessed.
“She’s a right good girl.  She wasn’t treated to kindly by the folks there and that treatment spread to the rest of us.  We’re from Oxford, ‘cross the river and then a ways.  Crossin’ that beast’s how I broke m’leg in the first place.  Din’t do much to treat it so doctor had to saw it away. Real funny. That’s becuase I’m a carpenter. I saw everythin’ away anyway.”
He looked at her.  He was 28 and she looked only a few years his senior. Closest person to his age was Darl who was 25.  His next closest sibling was 18.  That was Jewel.
He tried to be as meticulous in his wording as he could.
“I don’t got many resources here. My pa just remarried and moved back to Oxford with his new wife. He left’ us.”

She heard the voice before she saw the man, and with the day she’d had, this horrible, awful day, it  ought to have been NO SURPRISE that she was quick to take offense. The implication that she might know where a body might get PILLS! She didn’t look like any doctor, so the pills he wanted weren’t strictly PRESCRIBED, she guessed, bitterly. Getting called a whore by family was quite enough insult to her pride for one day, thank you very much, and being asked about pills was one blow too many.
“Listen, you–” Her head snapped up from the ground so she might glower at whoever-he-was, but damn. Look at his leg! At what was LEFT of it, more like. Damn, he hadn’t mean it LIKE THAT, had he? “Oh, I– I, uh…” And then her eyes found his face, which CERTAINLY wasn’t as fantastic as the business with the crutches. He had no desire to bother…?
Tumblr media
“Can’t say I do, but– haven’t you tried the shop just down the way? The druggist there? Seems like the right place to start.”
She even SMILED. Well, Caddy was never one to draw out a sour mood with strangers.

“You don’t reckon you could help a man get some pills to numb the pain do you?”
Cash mentally listed the problems building up until that point
1.) Addie Bundren, his mother, was dead
2.) His father, Anse, married a new woman once they buried Addie
3.) While this marriage was happening, Cash bade goodbye to his leg which was sawn off after a bad break
4.) Crutches and carpentry don’t mix well
“I have no desire to be much bother or nothin.”

“I really owe you for all your kindness ma’am.” Jewel bowed his head, deeper than is normal for a person.  More like a horse.
“I clean up real well if you ever need someone for hire.”

“ Please come in, “ She motioned for him to enter the small house, “ I was just about finished with some stew if you want to stay for dinner. You look tired. “

Jewel looked around, worried he didn’t feel too at home.  He felt dirty, tanned and raw and out of place and he wavered a moment.
“I could clean or peel apples if you want, ma’am. I’m normally not invited so warmly by strangers.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“ Oh, of course. I’ll get right started on them, “ Calondra, instantly cheered by the act of making something for another, motioned for the boy to come inside, “ Make yourself comfortable, please. It’s going to take a bit to make the pies. “

“’Course I want a job but I ain’t no city folk. I’m from Oxford Mississippi. I don’t know what you want in a personal assistant or nothin.  In truth, all I was hopin to do was to work in the kitchens or cleaning service of some sort. I ain’t refined enough to work well in high end jobs and the like.”
Jewel learned his instincts from the horses.  He stood a bit taller across from this man who was rapidly growing to frighten him.  He wasn’t sure why.  Jewel held his composure to the best of his ability, his nostrils flaring in a sense of alertness.

The elder woman at the front desk nodded telling him they do have an opening  and ask what was he willing to do around the hotel. James heard a voice not too far away from his table since he went back to attend to his whisky glass. with a swift pick of his glass with his right hand he  managed to walked down the rugged stairs  his pinky lifted just a bit that held a sliver ring on the end. “ you want a job, my young man? of course ill hire you” he gave him a slight pat on the back “ you can be my personal assistant.” he grinned  knowing what that very well meant for him.
“you start at once, “ he said softly, sliding the cigarette once more inside his mouth. but letting the smoke escaped through the nostrils’ of his nose.

His eyes lit up.  He didn’t expect this sort of favor or offer.  Never did.
“It don’t come in batches or nothing but I do like pies, especially the apple sort.” His voice didn’t indicate his excitement at this prospect, but it was certainly present.

Don’t cry for the past now, brother mine. Neither you nor I are free from blame. Nothing can erase the things we did,                                                        For the path we took was the same.

Jewel ain’t ever seen the city before.  Not a big one out west.  It was frightening and big and fierce and he didn’t have more than a nickel to his name.  He was used to sleeping in the barns of those he visited.  At best.  He missed the horses.  He even missed his family a bit even though he figured they didn’t miss him too much.  Maybe his little brother.  He wasn’t too sure.
Jewel Bundren looked at the magnificent hotel.  He wondered if it’d be a place to work.  Make some money. Enough to get out, go home and buy his horse back.
A stop in a city like this wouldn’t, couldn’t, do too much damage.
“Reckon you got a position open for hiring?”
Jewel stood as tall as he could and made himself look real intimidating like but he knew that wouldn’t do much good.  He couldn’t hide his voice no matter how hard he tried.

Devil of a Drink/Closed
The Cortez was beautifully built in the  1920’s, the economy seem  promising at the time. But quickly fell into despair  with the great  depression and the time  change. but people continually stay there with their low rates no one wanted  to  pay more then what they could afford. but this hotel was  knowing  for its suicides and perhaps  killing? or was  it. people  didn’t think  much on why  this place was so low  in the cost they  just  wanted to slash  and save. there was a woman who stood in the  front who would  give the  guest the keys ,with  rather big bifocals frowning all the time.
saying  nothing  pretty much.  but there was  other members of the  hotel  that no one knew about. such as the  man  with the  cigarette  behind the bar. people would call  him the  handsome devil  who resemble Clark gable  with  the cigarette, but  others wouldn’t  live  to say much on the  man. but  those who saw  him around would  offend tell  others.  he would wear  weird  looking clothing  but a  handsome smile  to go with those  old fashion clothes  he would  often wear.
he would  often  greet the  guest  still though that wasn’t  his  major thing. he  mostly  would just  wait  in his room for a night  that would strike  his interest  to snatch  a  kill in the hotel.  but this  time James  waited for “the  one” that need  his  assistance for becoming who their  meant  to  be, sitting behind  a  booth he took out  a cig form a rather small box , taping  it  on the booth  before  sliding one  with his index  finger and middle  finger placing  it above  his lower lip  and  underneath his  upper lip.
lighting it with  one flick  of  the match  blowing  the toxic smoke out of  his  lungs if  he  had any at this  rate  it was just a  habit.  the smoke wrap around  him as if  the  smoke was  just an  evil  demon  trying to grab  its  clutch around  him.  he placed a hand  once more  to the tip  where the  paper met the amber  taking  it out. looking at  all  the bystanders  that  pass his  lobby  halls.

“Copper.” He smiled a bit.  It wasn’t his prized horse.  They sold that one.  But it was an older horse.  One who shouldn’t be traveling so much. He studied her.  He wondered if he liked her because she wasn’t from the town.  He wasn’t very fond of the townspeople he’d met so far.
“You know it better than me it seems. Just buried my ma week or two ago. Pa moved us all out here for his new wife.” A small pang of bitterness tinged his words.
“Real young gal. Rich too.  Fixed him up with some new teeth.”

“ Uhh… I’m actually new myself, “ She tucked her hair behind her ear, “ But I can definitely uh… walk with you until we find a store. “ For some reason Mellodie couldn’t take her eyes off of this man. There was something about him, something she wanted to figure out. With a soft smile, Mellodie stepped forward.
“ What’s your horse’s name? “

“Ain’t nothin you could do there.”
The man was shocked by the offer and he flung the saddle off the horse and eyed her suspiciously.  Before their trek into down, he didn’t bother with most folks.  Ever since his father--no, surely that wasn’t right, he knew as much--married the younger woman from Jefferson, the siblings had scattered about the town trying to get away from their new home.
“But you reckon you could tell me a store I could get feed for this fella here?” He stroked the snout of the sturdy, older stallion.

So this is an RP account that used to be for Angelo from “Measure for Measure.”
Now it’s Faulkner and that literally says everything 3/4 of the mistakes I made as an English student
