a good pay off for ej would have been after his dad hung up on him having all the theatre kids corbin and miss jenn tell him they were proud of him. it’s all he wanted to hear.

Thinking about how they had to make Ej distracted in order to make Gicky happen cause they knew if they didn’t all his attention would’ve been on Gina and everything would’ve been perfect…
it works both ways…

the more and more i think about it, the more i realize that this show will NEVER convince me that ej was wrong for telling Val about the letter from his father before gina.
The show sets up EJ and Val as close childhood friends, while sort of faltering on the continuity of that relationship in the middle it is definitely solidified by the small conversation before EJ calls his dad in 308. This show always puts an emphasis on the importance of talking to your friends when things get rough, i don’t see why this is any different. Val must have a predeceasing knowledge of the rough relationship between EJ and his father, it’s sort of implied but even if it’s not, it can’t be a big reach to assume that a close friend would know something like that.
Val oversees and distributes the mail at the camp, something we have seen before and know is canon. So val, seeing a letter come in for her close friend that’s posted to be from his horrible father, obviously is going to be curious to ask what it’s about.
EJ knows that gina has mad abandonment issues, obviously there’s a better way to go about breaking this news to her rather than completely keeping it a secret. BUT gina’s abandonment issues do not exist in a vacuum, they are actively working against EJs fears of rejection and disappointing people he loves. In ejs mind, telling her this will not only hit on things that hes afraid of, but gina as well. he sees it as keeping her and him safe to not tell her. but he still wants to confide in someone, so why not a trusted friend who he knows won’t have an upsetting reaction.
at the end of the day ej caswell just wants to feel safe. he’s always grown up in an emotionally hostile environment, so if he see a solution to his problem where no danger has to occur, he’s gonna try and take it. this obviously isn’t the right thing to do, but it’s all he’s ever known and the writing of this show has NEVER given him the chance to try and grow past this.

even though we all keep saying how much EJ has changed for the better and he had a ton of growth in season 2 (all of which is true), at camp, even though he hasn't seen Val and Maddox since last year, before all the big changes we've seen him go through, neither of them made any comments like "you seem different but in a good way" or anything like that, which leads me to believe he's still the same guy at his core, and he's always been a sweet, thoughtful guy and gone out of his way to do things for other people. Because they both adored him (and it seemed like everyone at camp does) and didn't seem to have any issues with him and it didn't seem like either of them thought he was a bad guy at all or thought that he had ever been a bad guy. just a nice little thought that makes me happy. this basically confirms that EJ has always been a good guy, not always perfect, but a good guy 🥰

just wanna take a second to appreciate dara renee and matt cornett for TWO incredibly accurate and raw depictions of anxiety this season.
dara displayed a beautiful performance of that paralyzing fear that completely kicks you down and stops you in your tracks. something that happens to me so often in big social spaces (just like what the climbing wall represented)
and matt! matt was just phenomenal at showing that underlying DREAD that comes with an anxiety of the inevitable. any time ej is in the background of a scene after his phone call you can just see how he’s never really comfortable, and just on edge the whole time. something i can REALLY relate to because that’s just my default state.
props to both of them for playing such a real feeling and problem so well and so carefully, beautiful performances from them <3

Maddox clowning Jet about Kourtney was the funniest part of the episode for me. Because like why would you say that on camera???? He didn’t tell anyone that, it couldn't have been edited, he just said that all on his own. It must've been killing him. And she just laughed in his face.

There is more support in this single photo than EJ received this entire season.
And it’s from a character that, despite being a childhood friend, was ultimately only a guest star.
And I just think there is something so wrong about that.
