Through using this tool I realized that it does obscure the content through the fact that it does not account for tone, pauses and pronunciation of certain words. I think these cause great limitations because if one of its greatest abilities is that it can help learners with reading then there may be limitations in teaching correct pronunciation. I do think that this site conveys a bias towards American accents as the word pronunciation is heavily influenced by the American accent. I think that creating tools on the site that allow for more specific word pronunciation would help to overcome the bias of the application.

Digital Humanities pt.2

Looking at Natural Readers, I put a poem into the generator. I used “Alone” by Edgar Allan Poe and put it into the generator to have the reader, Stephen. I found that the text did not really translate well into the reader as it was an automated voice rather than an actual reader. I find this interesting as the website is called “Natural Readers.” I do however agree with the romantic view of technology being an exciting idea in the world of literature as it may be helpful for those who cannot afford technologies such as audible or who may struggle with reading on their own. I think that the most exciting part of this technology is that it can help someone who cannot read as it shows the words that are being read and highlights them as the reader goes along.

The website I was assigned is Natural Readers, on this website you choose a reader who specifies what you’re looking for, for example Stephen reads long files. You drag your file into the specified slot and then it converts it into an MP3 or PDF that allows the text to be translated into the natural reader voice.
