sorry just. imagine being timothy heller for a sec, your former best friend is a steadily rising artist, and in the wake of a movement meant to empower victims of abuse, you come forward about said best friend (allegedly) sexually assaulting you.

it's about a 50/50 split of who is sticking with their fav and who is disavowing her -- your assailant makes her own statement, leaving in a fruedian slip that she (allegedly) coerced you. and then a video comes out attempting to completely smear your character, the uploader;

- picks apart your statement

- gets pedantic about what you included in your statement and if a ""real"" victim would include that in a statement

- spreads a harmful narrative about those living with BPD falsely accusing people they know of abuse (even though let's be honest, it's usually the other way around)

- gets drunk halfway throughout the video

- conveniently doesn't mention that timothy wasn't the only person to accuse melanie of coercion

- creates a narrative that they think ""really"" happened, being that you lied because you were jealous of your (alleged) assailant's fame

and somehow people completely buy this as a debunking of your statement. this person then becomes almost solely known as the person that cleared your (alleged) assailant's name, and you're being bombarded with an army of middle schoolers sending you hate and death threats every day. for several years non-stop. you can't go on the internet to even just upload music without being harassed or the aforementioned uploader making an update video about you to add to a now 2 hr long playlist -- because somehow this individual has deluded themselves into thinking their word has any merit in a situation involving only two people.

just saying. if i was timothy i would be killing and eating people by this point. she's got more grace in a fingernail than the entirety of her (alleged) abuser's fanbase. im sure melanie's fans would've attacked her anyway, but i don't think it wouldve turned into this eight year long harassment campaign had sweeney just left well enough alone -- or, y'know, stopped at the one instead of making a sexual assault allgation their personal content farm.

i just kind of hate how every time someone is writing a female character, there is far more scrutiny on whether she is “good” representation. like no one ever writes a male character and is like “hmm… is this good representation for men?” because they’re ALLOWED to be written as smart or stupid, or serious or funny, or sensitive or mean, or loud or quiet, or competent or irrational, or jovial or angry, or wise or inexperienced, or pathetic or badass, or good or evil, or complex or one-dimensional. and they will ALWAYS be loved in some shape or form.

but the MOMENT a woman is any one of those things (even tho women irl can ALL have these traits), there are video essays and entire blogs and articles dedicated to Why That’s Not A Good Woman. and like YES, good female representation is important. i acknowledge and agree with that to hell and back. but god damn let these writers breathe. no one is ever going to want to write women again if we shove these impossible standards down their throats.
