Death Note is only good by accident. Death Note is brilliantly written. It's a comedy. It's a drama. It's a psychological thriller. It's just a fucked-up story a crazy guy wrote. It challenges us to think about criminality and morality. Everything it had to say about criminality and morality is absolute dogshit. It's incredibly entertaining. It's a modern classic. It's just something people liked when they were 14. It's a modern classic but for the wrong reasons. It's my best friend, my greatest enemy, my girlfriend,

A common complaint about the second arc - and Near particularly as a successor is that he doesn't respect L enough which is hilariously wrong for a bunch of reasons but two kind of stick out to me as a bit ridiculous. To start with, tossing a bunch of L's inheritance into a crowd of Kira worshippers and Demegawa. This isn't just a cheap trick using L's hand-me-downs, he's making a point to the world watching Kira's followers. Namely, that Kira is willing to use people who don't give a single shit about his ideals to win - and that those same people will immediately turn on Kira and each-other (the manga shows the aftermath and there sure are quite a few corpses) all for the sake of something shinier dangled in front of them. On top of that, L spends... god knows how much money on a giant skyscraper high tech headquarters and proceeds to move there and not investigate or do any work for months. The man didn't value his money. This is exactly the kind of stunt L would have pulled. The other is wearing the paper L mask to the warehouse meeting with Light - who has been operating on the thinly veiled premise that he is L's successor and not, you know, what he actually is. L's murderer. It's just a not so subtle fuck you to Light because Light has been figuratively wearing L's identity as a mask and dragging his name through the mud. If you think Near served as a copy of L outside of the story, sure - but literally in universe Light is the one that stole his identity and used it to facilitate his murders. Near is aware at this point that he's not actually able to match up to L, he needed Mello and now Mello is gone, and that imposter syndrome follows him into his mid to late twenties. He's also aware that no doubt Kira must have been thinking the same thing - that he's just a pale reflection of L pretending to match the real thing. Why not rub salt in the wound by doubling down on it?

L's midway death is the one thing that I genuinely just unreservedly admire Ohba for writing. It's the one writing choice in Death Note that I think is absolutely flawless and a stroke of pure genius.
And I do think it is better in the manga than in the anime because the complete lack of real warning, the lack of sentimentality, the sudden and abrupt loss of half of the driving force of the whole series so far - that takes guts and it really leaves the reader breathless.
It subverts every reader expectation while actively fueling the main theme of the whole narrative. IT KICKS SO MUCH ASS.

Have you ever thought about a Persona AU featuring Moon River?
Thought about enough to have a plot? No. Thought about enough to have Crossover Worldbuilding Thoughts? ABSOLUTELY:
Death Notes function via the Metaverse. This may or may not be a self-indulgent excuse to make the shinigami Velvet Room attendants.
Light, like the third semester Royal boss, has a really, really powerful Persona and also develops a palace. His Persona is Raguel. His Metaverse outfit is black and white and draws inspiration from popular representations of both personified Justice and avenging angels: big toga/robe vibes, probably a six-winged motif too. His mask is a blindfold.
Light's palace is a courthouse where he is the chief judge, the Kira Task Force are his bumbling clerks, the other Kiras are subordinate judges, and all others are defendants for him to deem guilty or innocent. The patrolling shadows take the form of bailiffs, and his treasure appears as a gavel (but is actually the notebook, naturally).
Near's a wildcard, but his main/first Persona is Váli. His Metaverse outfit has a very armored/robot vibe, and his mask is more of a helmet, modeled after Optimus Prime's head.
The SPK are Phantom Thieves. Gevanni's Persona is St. George, Lidner's is Mata Hari, and Rester's is Bolívar. I don't have any thoughts on their outfits.
Mello's also a wildcard, but in more of a limited, Black Mask vein. One of his Personas is Amleth; the other is Alastor. With both, he wears an all black outfit with a lot of leather. (Frankly, his canon outfit with the long jacket looks like a Metaverse outfit already.) His mask has executioner's hood vibes, but is probably also leather.
L had a palace. Mello and Near are in varying degrees of denial over this, but Light is fully aware. He's been in there, and the stories he can tell of it--and of L's cognitive Near and Mello--aren't flattering.
