“Oh, uh,” Bolin stammered, blushing a little, getting bashful. You swore his cheeks turned slightly pink. It was actually rather cute.

You laughed. “Nah, just friends,” you explained, figuring someone should give Korra a reply.

“Well, if you were a couple, you’d be pretty cute together,” Korra commented.

Bolin’s face turned even redder. “Ooh, anything you want to say?” you teased, poking at Bolin’s arm.

“Nope, nuh-uh, not at all,” Bolin replied.

“Good, because I’m starving. Let’s go to that noodle place you’ve been raving about lately,” you told him.

Bolin grinned and took your hand. He tended to do that when he got excited about taking you somewhere, so this was nothing strange. “Right this way,” he said, walking towards a different part of town. You nearly tripped over your feet keeping up, but luckily a little hop and you were back on track.

During dinner, Bolin was uncharacteristically silent, and when he did speak, he tended to trip over his words.

“You alright, Bolin?” you asked, worried. But then you smirked. “Are you really still embarrassed over what Korra said?”

“Embarrassed isn’t exactly the word I’d use,” Bolin commented.

You leaned forward over the table to get closer to your friend to make sure the conversation stayed between the two of you. “Then what word would you use?” you asked.

Instead of answering, Bolin shoved a mouthful of noodles into his mouth and slurped them up to give himself time to think. Once he finished, he sighed. “Okay, if this makes things awkward, promise to pretend this never happened, alright?”

You looked at Bolin confused. “We’re best friends. We know things about each other that we don’t need to know about each other. What could make us awkward?”

“Korra’s comments made me think… what if this was a date? And I realized I actually like the idea of dating you,” Bolin confessed, but when you didn’t respond right away, he started to panic. “B-but only if you want to, this isn’t actually a date, just friends hanging out, but…”

You held up a finger to silence Bolin, then kissed his cheek. “We can try the date thing. Though, to be honest, it’d be much of the same thing we usually do, just with kissing and more cuddling.”

Bolin blushed at first, then grinned. “Alright!” he exclaimed, pumping his fist.

“Stopit,” you muttered yourself, lightly hitting your head with the side of your fist, trying to knock the thoughts out. You had caught yourself staring at Bolin again.

“Everything alright?” Asami asked from her spot next to you. “Food alright?”

“I mean, Southern Water Tribe food does take some getting used to,” Korra commented, before slurping up a few noodles.

“Oh, no, that’s not it,” you replied with a shake of the head.

“What’s not what?” Bolin asked, finally returning to the table with his second serving of food.

“Nothing,” you quickly responded.

“Y/N just seemed upset about something,” Korra replied for you. You pouted at her, but she didn’t notice.

Bolin stared at you, apparently trying to read you, before diving into his food.

After dinner, while the others started walking to the docks to head back to Air Temple Island, Bolin grabbed your arm to hang back.

“Hey, did I say something?” he asked, looking to you with worry in his gaze. “You were glaring at me during dinner, and you’ve been a bit… dodgy.”

You quickly shook your head. “No, not at all,” you assured him. “It’s just me being weird.”

“You know, I’m here if you need to talk,” Bolin assured you.

You looked at Bolin, contemplating what you wanted to say next. “How is everything with you? I know you’ve had it a bit rough, with, well, everything with Eska.”

Bolin was clearly surprised at the question. “She was a nutcase, I’m glad I made it out alive,” he replied.

“You think you’re ready to try another relationship?” you asked, staring out at the skyline. You knew you’d chicken out if you looked directly at Bolin.

“I-I mean, if the right girl comes along,” Bolin stuttered, now the one awkwardly looking away from you.

You smiled, rocking on your toes to give him a kiss on the cheek. “Would I be the ‘right girl’?” you asked.

You watched Bolin’s face turn a bright red, as a smile grew across his face. “Well, only one way to find out,” he told you with a wink, before draping his arm around your shoulders. “I had a feeling you had a crush on me.”

“You did not,” you argued, rolling your eyes with a smile and laugh.

a/n: welp I guess I write for Bolin now! Bare with me for any inaccuracies I’m barely on s1e8 of my rewatch

It was another quiet day on Air Temple Island as you sat through your meditation session alongside Jinora, the only child of Tenzin’s who could actually participate in the act without either falling asleep or losing concentration. The silence was much needed and much appreciated considering the fact that it had become a rarity ever since the arrival of a certain Avatar.

“Y/n! Just who I wanted to see!” Korra exclaimed suddenly, clapping you a bit too hard on the back and breaking both you and Jinora from your peaceful state. A small groan escapes you at the stinging pain prickling at your skin but you keep your composure and open your eyes to greet the grinning Avatar.

“Hello Korra,” you smile pleasantly, rising from your spot on the ground and giving the younger air bender permission to dismiss herself from your presence. “What can I help you with?”

“There’s actually some people I wanted you to meet,” she explains, and it’s only then that you notice the two very attractive boys and extremely beautiful girl standing just a few feet shy behind her figure. “This is Mako, Bolin, and Asami. They’re going to be staying with us here on the island.”

“It’s always nice to see new faces,” you reply before bowing in greeting to your new guests. “It’s very lovely to meet you all.”

The green eyed boy gives you a toothy grin before leaning over and whispering obnoxiously loud to his brother, “she’s really pretty!”

“Thank you,” you giggle softly, a blush dusting your cheeks that Korra definitely doesn’t miss.

“So you’re an air bender?” Mako questions, a dumb question to ask in all honestly considering the obvious blue arrowhead tattooed onto your forehead, but a conversation starter nonetheless.

“I am,” you nod with a smile. “Master Tenzin found me on the streets when I was four using my bending to steal food from local vendors. He took me in as his own and helped me to become an air bending master. I owe all I have to that man and his darling little family.”

“You’re a master? That is so cool!” Bolin exclaims in awe. “Oh, oh! Can you make me one of those cool air scooters? You know, the ones that go really fast!”

“Maybe another time, Bolin,” Korra laughs. “We need to get you guys settled in.”

“Aw, okay,” he frowns, but his eyes widen at the sight of his furry little friend perched upon your shoulders. Your laughter is like music to his ears, your smile brighter than any star in the sky as you scratch gently behind Pabu’s ears before allowing him to wind his way along your arm before jumping down and scurrying off to play with Naga.

“If any of you need anything please don’t hesitate to see me. My name is y/n, and I hope you enjoy your stay here with us,” you announce with a final smile before departing to help tend to the vegetable gardens. Bolin’s eyes never leave your retreating from and Mako has to drag him by the collar to get him moving towards the boy’s side of the island.

“Hey, so uh, quick question,” he utters nervously to Korra, “what are the rules when it comes to dating for air benders?”

“None. In fact they’re very encouraging of love,” Korra consoles, but before Bolin can celebrate she continues, “Oh, but it’s also an unspoken rule on the island that y/n’s off limits. Unless, of course, you’re brave enough to face the wrath of Tenzin in return.”

“I’ll do anything for love!” Bolin professes fiercely, causing Korra to laugh and Mako to merely roll his eyes at his brother’s antics.

“You’re hopeless. Absolutely hopeless!”

“Hopelessly in love,” Bolin sighs dreamily, and he doesn’t stop thinking about you for the rest of the day.
