It's pretty amazing. The next step is to make having children affordable for people during the age 20 to 40 bracket.
Most people want kids when they have time to enjoy with them, not when it means poverty, sleep deprivation, and guilt at not being able to give them the time and affection they need.
No sane person wants to bring children or themselves into misery.

Military Appreciation Month is in May and National Veterans and Military Families Month is in November.
Anyone complaining about Pride month and bringing up military service members is showing that they care so little about the military that they completely forgot about them until they were looking for a convenient strawman.
And that's such a small strawman in the picture.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

If you're hit hard enough to break your cheekbone or cause (temporary or lasting) brain damage, it can either feel like sharp pain or nothing much at all until the next day. Like, it might be fire along the break and up through the eyes ( trigeminal nerve branches through the cheek and will also take damage from a hit like that) or just a vague floaty numbness as you try to figure out why your legs are no longer moving like they're supposed to or why you can't stand upright anymore. You may hear ringing sounds even in quiet rooms.
Even if you think you got the Hollywood experience of being knocked out and waking up feeling alright soon after, the truth is that over the next few hours or days your brain will surprise you with all sorts of new ways in which it is not working quite right. A concussed brain is just not capable of doing an accurate self evaluation. This may feel like being hungover with jet lag- fuzzy thought patterns feel similar to being up way too late or too early, with a similar lack of coordination/difficulty in being able to pick up or hold small things or follow conversations.
As you recover you will begin to understand just how bad your symptoms were as your brain becomes more capable of assessing the damage.
how does being punched in the face feel like

The rate of peripartum cardiomyopathy is 1 in 100 for pregnant people from Nigeria and less than 1 in 15,000 for pregnant people without African ancestry.
I'm white as milk (but my Grandma isn't), so I was passing out multiple times a day and my OB still couldn't figure it out. She was certain it was all in my head and started recommending orgasm or bubble baths to chill me out.
Sorry, but that doesn't work for heart failure.
I got really lucky. The cardiologist I saw in the ER was Nigerian. He recognized the issue just walking past me and invited himself to consult when he saw the (American) hospital wasn't considering what he thought was obvious.
5 months after my baby was born, he let me know that given the lack of medical care and severity, I had only had between a 20 and 30% chance of survival at the time of diagnosis.
He made the difference. Until he flipçped through my chart and spoke up, my OB thought I was a drama queen and making shit up. She was blunt about it. Of course that "diagnosis" made my boss at work much less sympathetic. Diversity in doctors is so valuable.
It still blows my mind just how close to death I was as other people were still telling me to try meditation or sex or to just stop complaining, because "pregnancy is hard for everyone."

This worked BEAUTIFULLY when applied in Utah, even though the program was limited to just the chronically homeless (people who were unable to secure housing for 3+ years). The government spent dramatically less when people weren't calling 911 or committing petty crimes to avoid freezing to death or spending much of the winter in the hospital because they were almost freezing to death.
Pity the program has been fought so hard in favor of for-profit imprisonment of most of the homeless population. It's weird how a state ruled by a theocracy (politicians publicize seeking Mormon church leader's approval on controversial laws) has so little charity for the homeless.

Driving home through the fog at 2:00 a.m. from my crappy job in college, the restraints on the truck ahead of me broke, and the load of wood it carried flew everywhere.
I ended up driving off the road and into a field to avoid the flying logs.
As I climbed out of the car I could hear the trucker screaming and praying as he ran towards me. He thought he'd killed me.
I was so tired from my long shift that it wasn't really until I was helping him put out cones and road flares that it clicked what had almost happened.

so many articles about Fast Fashion, not enough articles about what the hell is happening to the quality of clothes
Like okay. People own more pieces of clothing nowadays and they wear them a lesser number of times before throwing them out. BUT.
Why do we pretend like this is pure vanity or careless wastefulness, rather than forced by the qualities of the clothes themselves?
The other day, I was going through boxes of old clothes in the basement in search of fabric to practice sewing on. The difference in quality of the fabrics themselves is shocking! The worn-out old jeans from twenty years ago are MUCH thicker and tougher than anything more recent. My old baby clothes are made as sturdy as my work clothes from today.
In the past couple years, I have had entire seams rip out of clothes on the first wash. That's not normal!
Polyester blend shirts that feel cozy and soft when they are new, become scratchy and rough after 20 washes or so. I am trying to avoid polyester, but it gets harder and harder; the other day i couldn't find a single pack of crew socks that was 100% cotton. SOCKS!
Also, pilling is out of control. The newest pants I bought developed pills within a single day of walking around campus with a backpack.
These companies are trying to frog-boil us but touching clothes from twenty years ago, the useless crap of today would stick out like a sore thumb...

In the case of the AIDS crisis mentioned in the last note, it is important to know that often families were not given the opportunity to know or be involved.
A dear family friend punched an Abbot in the face at her brother's funeral. Twice. He had decided that the family did not need to know the brother had entered the hospital because he had AIDS. She was left ignorant and confused at the sudden lack of communication from her brother until he died only a few weeks later. It was the 80s. She couldn't just text him and ask him to pick up the phone. She could only write and ask why he hadn't answered her letters. She'd already bought tickets to visit and check on him when news of his death arrived.
It's also worth knowing that the Bishop who was over this Abbot held her purse and another Bishop held her coat to better facilitate her public beating of the Abbot who denied this young man and his lover the comfort of their family as they died.

The birds, bees, and butterflies don't follow human gender expectations.
Did you know that among chickens, hens have ZW chromosomes and roosters have ZZ chromosomes? This is the same for most birds.
I dislike using the same male/female terms across species. Cuz, that "male" plant might change gender, clownfish change sex, and those fungi have 200 to 10,000 biological sexes. None of them are a boy or girl anything. That's not actually how any of this works.

My last cat was so elderly and sick when we picked her at the shelter that when we took her to her first vet appointment, the vet told us he'd give us a kitten from a litter he had in the back and euthanize our cat before we got attached.
When he realized that we were willing to pay for antibiotics and stitches, he confessed that due to an animal hoarder, there wasn't a vet in the state with enough space to hospitalize my cat safely. He didn't think she'd make it without that. She had an abscess, tumors he couldn't operate on, a lung infection, arthritis and sores hidden under matted fur. We bought the antibiotics, washed her twice a day and kept her wounds clean.
Once she recovered, she was the best cat. She was loving and sweet and every bit worth the extra effort. Any kindness shown to her, she repaid 10 fold.

This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.
A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!
Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.
All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.
Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!
