a few reasons why Richie Tozier is a Ravenclaw

(I’m specifically talking about book!Richie btw, but if you want also about the one of the movie)

Richie Tozier is a living Ravenclaw cliché, no ifs no buts. He’s often considered the dumbass one, but do you remember what Forrest Gump said, “stupid is as stupid does”? He acts like that, but he isn’t. Like, at all.

He knew that Richie got A’s and B’s in his schoolwork (…) is the very first thing (and not the last) Eddie says about him. It’s very likely that Richie’s the sharpest brain within the group, the only problem is that the mind - mouth filter is kinda faulty and that gets him in a ton of troubles and drives people to misunderstand his words and actions. So point one, he’s a sort of brainiac.

Number two, his Voices. “Richie had about a dozen different Voices”, Eddie tells us (yes, I’m gonna use him as my spokesman, since he spends most of his first chapter talking about Richie….). I think the whole concept of Voice tells us a lot about the character. I mean, who would think of a dozen of different personalities with their own stories and impersonate them depending on the different situations? That’s super smart.  

And that brings us to point three, because Richie has a huge emotional intelligence. He sees everything, he can read people’s emotions even though they’re trying to hide them. He could read both of his parents like books – well-worn and well-loved books – and he was pretty sure he was going to get what he wanted, or Richie hang up and looked at the phone thoughtfully. It suddenly occurred to him that Ben Hanscom was lonely are just two evidences among many others. This skill is not an easy burden, especially for a boy of his age, therefore Richie creates several masks for himself in order to distract attention from the things that he’s scared of or he’s not able to deal with.   

Last but not least, Richie is a master of dialectics. He knows exactly what to say in order to achieve his aim, even when he rambles (and in case you didn’t notice he rambles a lot) he knows where he wants to go. e.g., and now I’ll be referring to a very In Character scene from the movie, when IT grabs Bill and Richie pretends he’s surrendering while his actual aim is to create a diversion in order to make the assault more efficient. (you’re doing amazing, sweetie). Another example from the book: He wondered briefly if he was actually trying to prove something or just throwing up a smokescreen of words so he could see that room, that picture. What else?

 Richie is extremely brilliant, empathetic, perceptive, and I could stop here but if you’re still not convinced I should probably mention the fact that during the smoke-hole ritual he sees himself in the guise of Sherlock Holmes, the most Ravenclaw fictional character ever. 

And Stephen King does write a lot of references to Doyle’s work, but after that I’ve never read of a character picturing themselves as Sherlock Holmes. So…
