Considering the cost of competitive formats, box leagues are probably still a cheaper entry point than most 60 card formats.
Not to defend anything wizards are doing, more just to commiserate on the ridiculous price point magic is at.
The new "Commander Box League" format is more evidence that Wizards has no idea the problems with their own game.
In the USA it's entirely possible people might participate in an event like this. If you were going to buy a box anyway, why not?
In the rest of the world however, the game is already suffocating under its costs. Yes I enjoy playing commander but there is absolutely no chance I'm going to spend Three Hundred Canadian Dollars to play, more than that if there is an entry fee.
Yes I understand it's just another format and there is no requirement to participate, and I have zero intentions to do so. But the fact that this is a thing they think I might do says a lot about how they view their game.

I noticed that a lot of people missed a small reference WB made about Jack Slash
So Jack Slash is obviously and purposely a Joker reference, meant to play into the fact that despite just being a homicidal clown, Joker is treated as a big bad player in the cape game (I personally find that incredibly dumb moment of him being so “crazy” that he is immune to Martian Manhunter mind powers to be the most memorable).
In Jack’s case, despite having a generally mid power (can project the edge of his blades as far as he can see), the fact that his Shard can boss other Shards around means that he’s always on top and cannot be defeated by Parahumans in a fight, so they need to use normal humans to defeat him.
The Joker and Jack Slash stuff is all well and good… until you remember there are 2 Jack Slashes.
Some of you might know what I mean, but for those who don’t, Eden’s/Contessa’s Interlude gave us an alternate timeline that shows us a heroic Jack Slash:
Tumblr media
- Interlude 29 Worm
The Black Knight is Jack Slash, a member of the Wardens.
Jack Slash is a Dark Knight. A caped crusader with peak human skills that lets him hang with the big leagues.
He’s fucking Batman.

His grip on my shoulder tightened. "We have books here bound in the hides of echidnas, krakens, and beasts so long extinct that those whose studies they are, are for the most part of the opinion that no trace of them survives unfossilized. We have books bound wholly in metals of unknown alloy, and books whose bindings are covered with thickset gems. We have books cased in perfumed woods shipped across the inconceivable gulf between creations - books doubly precious because no one on Urth can read them. "We have books whose papers are matted of plants from which spring curious alkaloids, so that the reader, in turning their pages, is taken unaware by bizarre fantasies and chimeric dreams. Books whose pages are not paper at all, but delicate wafers of white jade, ivory, and shell; books too whose leaves are the desiccated leaves of unknown plants. Books we have also that are not books at all to the eye: scrolls and tablets and recordings on a hundred different substances. There is a cube of crystal here - though I can no longer tell you where - no larger than the ball of your thumb that contains more books than the library itself does. Though a harlot might dangle it from one ear for an ornament, there are not volumes enough in the world to counterweight the other. All these I came to know, and I made safeguarding them my life's devotion."
Gene Wolfe, Shadow of the Torturer (1980)

So, fun fact about the skinned FurReal pony - I got the ID wrong, but only because Smores and Butterscotch's necks are semi-fixed in position, and I didn't think to google if the image I had of Butterscotch was mirrored.
The skinned horse IS Butterscotch, not Smores, but all of that's besides the point.
The reason I'm making this post is that y'all need to know that they skinned Butterscotch to turn her into a flamethrower

I've only barely started playing MTG but I am so far baffled as to how the community doesn't have some IRL equivalent of Pokemon gyms. People put so much effort into creating decks with unique theming, and while plenty of people are trying to optimize their decks to be flawlessly unbeatable, even more just seem to really like decks with cool themes surrounding particular creature types or mechanics.
I just think Magic would lend itself really well to a type of semi-competitive scene where you and your buddies can hop on the bus to the next town over to go fight Crab Guy (guy who likes crabs) at the Crab Gym (room at the back of a game store with paper crabs on the walls) to get your Crab Badge (small pin with a crab on it) by defeating his Crab Deck (deck whose only creature cards are crabs)

How does Narwhal actually maintain her secret identity. Like even if she makes a mask out of forcefields. There can't be that many 7 foot tall women with knee-length platinum blonde hair in Toronto, right? Can there be? Can I meet them? I'll drive to Toronto to meet them.
