Recognizing Juneteenth, the End of Slavery: 1865

Many believe that slavery ended in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation. And while this may have some truth, as The National Museum of African American History and Culture states: 

“Not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later.”

June + Nineteen= Juneteenth

It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 when union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, TX that freedom actually rang for people still enslaved. Juneteenth became the official day of freedom (June +19th= Juneteenth). The National Museum of African American History and Culture says:

“The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas.” 

Slavery Ended but that Didn’t Mean Freedom

Black people in America have liberties, only enough freedom to make decisions to alternatives approved by the government. We can’t marry more than one person, we can’t legally consume plants like peyote, we are restricted from traveling outside of imaginary borders without the government knowing about it; the list can go on and on.

Black Codes, Jim Crow laws, the Reconstruction Era, alcohol prohibition, and a new way to target black people through the Harrison Narcotics Act all came into when slavery ended. America had to ensure that black people weren’t really free. In 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “Black Codes”, which were enforced throughout the south following the Civil War.

After the civil war, a period called Reconstruction was initiated; both Black Codes and Reconstruction limited the rights of Black people. This set of restrictions exploited Black people as a labor source. The 1865 ratification of the 13th Amendment prohibited slavery and servitude in all circumstances “except as a punishment for crime.” 

This gave the south a loophole which resulted in those states criminalizing activities that would make it easy to imprison Black people. This made it easy to force black people into servitude once again. 

Recognizing Juneteenth

There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth and America should! America should honor the lives that built this nation. We shouldn’t do it the way WalMart attempted to, you know, as a celebration of capitalism. Instead of making ice cream and napkins, why not elevate a black owned business by sharing their website with your network? 

Mindfulness around cultural appropriation is important. Very Well Family makes a great point about celebrating Juneteenth as a non-Black Person:

“You should be aware of the concept of “cultural appropriation,” the practice of adopting race-specific cultural practices as your own without proper attribution or credit and in ways that further exacerbate racial oppression.

For example, there is nothing wrong with celebrating Juneteenth as a non-Black person at home or with others. Supporting Black organizations and educating yourself about Black history and culture is also great. But it might be less appropriate for a non-Black person to partake in Juneteenth customs like wearing African-themed clothing or performing traditional African dances.”

I started living on the road making cannabis and travel a part of my everyday life back in 2018. I packed up and hit the road to learn all I could about the world of cannabis and the magical plant herself. Fast forward 4 years later and I see headlines like the one by Forbes: Cannabis Tourism Is Now A $17 Billion Industry—And It’s Just Taking Off; and my initial reaction is: “well of course it is!”

Cannabis is an industry and every industry will be linked to cannabis. I knew travel and cannabis would be a thing! Victor Pinho, cofounder of Emerald Farm Tours told Forbes: “For now, cannabis travel has been largely ignored by tourism boards and the industry, leaving millions of dollars on the table”.

Cannabis Travel Studies and Money

$17 million says to me that it is no longer being largely ignored, and with the rise of listings on Bud and Breakfast, a 420 travel and experience platform, my opinion is that, there will be no slow down in sight; cannabis travel is here! Can I get a cannatravelman?

Pure CBD Strain Review

Two hemp strains go by the name Pure CBD. One is called Sweet Pure CBD, and the other is called Tatanka Pure CBD. These two cultivars are both bred for their high CBD expressions and almost non-existent THC levels. Even though these two strains are named quite similarly, they are, in fact, two different strains. Their lineages are different, as far as we can discern.

Pure CBD Strain Lineage

Sweet Seeds has not disclosed the parent strains for their Pure CBD cultivar. All that is known about the Sweet Pure CBD strain is that the popular hemp strain Diesel has a major role to play in its genetics. There is also an auto flower version of the Sweet Pure CBD called the Sweet Pure Auto CBD.

On the other hand, Tatanka Pure CBD is a little more transparent. Tatanka was created by crossing Elixir Vitae with Medical CBD. The two strains were crossed for several generations until a stable cultivar was born. This is what turned into the Tatanka Pure CBD strain.

To better understand these strains, let’s take a closer look at their lineage. Knowing and understanding the parent strains is always the best way to get to know a new strain.

Diesel

Sweet Pure CBD descends from a pollinated clone of the Diesel family of cultivars. This strain is said to have been an accidental discovery. Legend has it that it was discovered in a bag of buds that were thought to be sinsemilla (without seeds). 13 seeds were recovered from the bag, which almost seems biblical! Out of these 13 seeds grew one of the most popular strains in the US.

Diesel has a large influence in the hemp market, which is necessarily an offshoot of the original cannabis industry that started working on various hemp strains. What is interesting is that Diesel is known for high levels of THC with a Sativa dominance. But the Sweet Pure CBD strain has almost no THC.

The Tatanka Pure CBD strain inherits many of its traits from the Elixir Vitae CBD strain. Created by Medical Seeds (who are also behind the eponymous Medical CBD strain), it is a high CBD cultivar that was bred through a crossing of Medical CBD and Jean Dark CBD. It is a well-balanced hybrid between Sativa and Indica. This also means Medical CBD has about 75% presence in the Pure CBD cultivar.

Elixir Vitae has an intense aromatic presence, with a medium-sized plant that has wide stems, short knot spacing, and symmetrical branching. It has pink and violet pistils on large, dense, and resinous buds. It does well both indoors and outdoors. It can also be grown in a greenhouse. It is a successful commercial CBD strain.

Pure CBD Aromatic Profile

The Sweet Pure CBD terpene profile is somewhat reminiscent of the Diesel family. There is a strong presence of fresh citrus notes that will remind you of oranges, mandarins, and grapefruit. There are also clearly discernible notes of berries and cypress. Even though it is not a THC-rich strain, the aromatic presence is very similar to top-shelf cannabis strains. This makes it excellent for smoking and vaping.

Tatanka Pure CBD, on the other hand, has a candy-sweet aromatic presence with strong fruity overtones. Contrasting these aromas are notes of pepper and spice. Overall, it has a very pleasing and sweet aromatic presence that delivers excellent taste when smoked and vaped.

Each of these strains changes its aromas slightly when they are broken and ground up. Some of the notes go into the background while others transform and come to the foreground.

Cannabis legalization is showing no signs of slowing down, and as legalization continues to make its way into states across the country, be it medical and/or adult use, businesses are seeking ways to accommodate cannabis consumers. Cannabis travel networks and platforms such as Bud and Breakfast are partnering with bed and breakfast owners and hotels to offer cannabis friendly lodging. Remembering that cannabis is medicine first is important because, a traveler with disabilities that consumes cannabis for medicine first, shouldn’t have to step outside and into a corner to consume their meds. Especially not while the lover of cocktails gets to stay cozy and comfortable indoors- what a slap in the face. 

Hotels like the Clarendon Hotel & Spa by Green Tree, in Phoenix, AZ are standing with cannabis consumers. Recently, they launched 8 cannabis friendly hotel rooms that can be booked on Bud and Breakfast, with plans to launch more, and an onsite consumption lounge where visitors can kick back, consume, and even purchase CBD products. 

The Need for Patient Consideration in Lodging

Most hotels and bed and breakfasts have strict no smoking policies, even for those that have medical cannabis cards proving that cannabis is their medicine. The Clarendon Hotel & Spa says it was important for them to launch cannabis friendly spaces and lodging when adult use legalization came to Arizona:

“As the legality around and perception about cannabis changes, we noticed there were not many spaces that allowed and welcomed its use. As such, we wanted to give guests visiting Phoenix the ability to enjoy cannabis use in a relaxed, supportive environment. Additionally, there are a lot of apartments around us, and many of them continue to have non-smoking clauses, prohibiting cannabis use on their properties. We are hoping our lounge can provide the locals with a safe space as well.” 

The Clarendon Hotel & Spa has been a boutique hotel for years. It has the feels of the 70’s, with touches throughout that remind visitors that it is in fact current day. The Clarendon’s setup is unique, offering both motel style rooms and hotel style rooms (indoor/outdoor) which the hotel credits for the “fairly easy” launch of cannabis friendly suites; “The construction of the rooms meant we could easily convert them to cannabis-friendly rooms without the risk of smoke and smells traveling to other spaces.” 

Throughout the hotel’s history, they have constantly added, changed, and reimagined what the property should look like. The management team says: 

“This has led to the current mashup feeling you described, where we thought it would be fun to take multiple disparate elements and combine them in interesting and quirky ways. Otherwise, the room renovations centered around removal and replacement of surfaces that could become easily dirty, burned, or hold odors. Plus, of course, finding fun art and colors to incorporate into the new rooms.” 

Combining Non Smoking and Smoking Spaces in a Hotel 

Non smoking and smoking can exist together. It wasn’t that long ago that hotels, restaurants, and office spaces operated with smoking and non smoking sections. The Clarendon Hotel found a middle ground to accommodate cannabis smokers and non smokers: “Not all the guests who stay with us are interested in or want to be around cannabis. Limiting the use of cannabis in public spaces was important to ensure everyone felt comfortable and welcome during their stay with us.”

When asked about any pushback, differences, and difficulties in both spaces existing under one roof, management responded: “There has been surprisingly little difference. We had to do some extra training in relation to cleaning the rooms, but otherwise we have found most people enjoy their stay with us – both those who do and do not use cannabis, without any major pushback from one side or the other or needing any kind of special actions on behalf of the staff.”
