Featured Hike #12 : Three Lakes Loop
Difficulty: Easy/Intermediate
Hike Time: About 2 hours If you do all three lakes and waterfall.
Tumblr media
Three Lakes Loop is a fantastic loop that winds through a lush forest, linking three lakes – Lost Lake, Dollar Lake, and Lost Lake Slough. There’s even a nice waterfall that is only about 30 steps off the trail.  It’s a perfect hike for families, friends or even to do by yourself.
Tumblr media
Occasionally, the trail opens up to some nice mountain views.
Tumblr media
But, the real treasures are  the lakes and their serenity, especially Lost Lake and Dollar Lake, which are the two you do have to walk too. Lost Lake Slough is the starting lake and is bordered by the campground.  My favorite of the lakes was Dollar Lake. It was so peaceful and I would have loved to enjoy a picnic lunch while admiring the beauty.
Tumblr media
To get to the trail head drive out Kebler Pass and at Lost Lake Campground sign take a left.  Follow that road up to the campground. If you park at the campground expect to pay a $3 fee. If you want to bypass the fee, after the cattle guard but before campground there will be a dirt parking lot, known as Beckwith Horse Trailhead. Follow the trail that says Beckwith Bench. This trail feeds you to the Lost Lake Trail and campground. Once you link the trails go right around the lake and by the campground and you will see the trailhead sign after a bit of walking.

Tomorrow’s Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series featuring: Trout Steak Revival
Tumblr media
Get stoked as we conclude our Live! from Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series with Colorado’s own Trout Steak Revival.  Kick off your shoes and bring your lawn chairs as we get down during our last concert of the summer!
How did the band start? The band has been together for about five years, though the current configuration of band members have been around since around 2012.  We’ve released three albums, including our most recent album, “Brighter Every Day,” which was produced by our friend Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters
What has been the biggest accomplishment as a band? The band’s biggest accomplishment thus far has been winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, which was a huge honor!  The band also won an Emmy award for providing the soundtrack to a Rocky Mountain PBS web-based documentary, "Great Ingredients.”
Have you played in Crested butte before? We’ve played in Crested Butte only once last October, and we are really excited to get back and play at the Live! from Mt Crested Butte Free Concert Series this year. We hope to return during the winter or sometime in the near future and play at the Performing Arts Center.
Where has been your favorite places to perform while in Colorado? We’ve been very fortunate to play in a lot of great festivals and venues this past year, including the Bluebird Theater in Denver, the Boulder Theater, Pagosa Folk and Bluegrass, Telluride Bluegrass, Strings Music Fest in Steamboat, and even Red Rocks this summer!

Live! From Mt. Crested Free Concert Series Featuring: Zongo Junction
Tumblr media
Zongo Junction rolls into Crested Butte tonight when they perform at the Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series!  Their 9-piece instrumental Afrobeat band from Brooklyn, New York will have you moving and grooving.  Learn how their band took off in the Big Apple in during our conversation below!
1. How did the band start?
The band was started in 2009 after Charles returned from a trip to Ghana.  He had been a big fan of Afrobeat for years, and wanted to start the band before he left, but never got it going.  When Charles got back, he felt inspired and got a crew of people together to play some of the music in his basement studio in Brooklyn.  After a few rehearsals, we had a band!  We started playing in clubs around NYC, and slowly started making our way around the East Coast (Boston, DC, Philly, Burlington etc..), and then to the West Coast.
2. What has been your biggest accomplishment as a band?
The sheer fact that we've been able to stay together as a band, record 2 full length albums, and tour multiple times across the country is our biggest accomplishment!  It's not easy to do that as a 3 piece band, let alone a 9 piece band.
3. What was the inspiration in traveling to Ghana?
Growing up in the Bay Area, I was exposed to a ton of music from all over the world.  A lot of the music Charles listened to and is interested in, has roots in West Africa.  When the opportunity presented itself to spend some time in Africa, Charles jumped on it.  Charles is the drummer, and the drumming tradition in Ghana in particular, is one of the oldest and richest in the world.
4. What did you do while you were in Africa?
Charles spent a lot of time traveling.  The country is rich with different cultures, languages, music, landscapes and more, so there are endless things to do and see.  He studied with a xylophonist (there they are called gyil's) for the majority of his time there, named SK Kakraba Lobi, who is the son of one of the most renown musicians in the country.  It was an incredible experience to study with someone like that, in a setting like that.
5. Where has been your favorite place to perform while on tour?
Colorado!  No joke!  It's the most beautiful state, and the people there have been so receptive to us and our music.  We hope we can come back more often than once a year!

Featured Hike #11: Whetstone Vista
Tumblr media
It was a sunny day as we made our way to the short and easy Whetstone Vista trial located just off Brush Creek Road.  This easy hike is mellow enough for the whole family to enjoy. Its easy access and connection to the Upper Upper Loop trail allows you to wander whichever way you so desire.  There’s nothing better than enjoying this hike with friends and family as it strengthens relationships and allows you to get away.  This trail is short, but offers amazing views of Whetstone Mountain that will leave you in awe.  So, have fun and be safe!
Tumblr media
Make your way to the Whetstone Vista trail head by heading south on Highway 135 before taking a left at Skyland/Club at Crested Butte entrance.  After turning on to Brush Creek Road, continue for another mile before you reach the Whetstone Vista trailhead sign.  You will notice a small parking area on the right shoulder.  Park your car, and get ready for a relaxing stroll through the woods.  If you make it to the dirt road, stop and turn around as you have gone too far.
Tumblr media
Continue on the Whetstone Vista trail and soak in this marvelous beauty this trail offers.  You will notice a jungle of lush green aspen trees all around you.  As you continue on, you will most likely encounter cute and entertaining chipmunks that will be chirping and wondering who their new visitors are.  Take some pictures of these little guys and admire their playful demeanor.
Tumblr media
As you continue on the trail, for a short time, you will come across the connection to the Upper Upper Loop trail.  Here, you can either go left or right.  We decided to head to the right and get a birdseye view of Whetstone Mountain.  However, be cautious as you hike on these trails as they are popular trails for mountain bikers.
Tumblr media
The Whetsone Vista trail is a great, short, and easy hike.  It is the ideal hike for an afternoon stroll with friends or family.  The views are astounding and awe inspiring and will leave you with a sense of peace. During our short hike, we sat down on some rocks a top the Upper Upper Loop and listened to the wind blow through the trees with the sounds of natural wind chimes.  We soaked in the beauty, took a few deep breaths and made our way back to our vehicles.  Get out there and have fun on this awesome hike!

Let’s Go Fly Fishing: Scenic River Tours
Tumblr media
Colorado is widely known for its incredible fly fishing opportunities throughout the state and here in Crested Butte we are fortunate enough to have some of the best fly fishing around.  Recently, we got the opportunity to spend some time with Scenic River Tours as they prepared for a fun filled guided fly fishing experience.
Throughout our time, our guide said fly fishing is a great activity to do whether you are a beginner or an advanced fisherman, and Scenic River Tours has just what you are looking for.  As a beginner, our guide began to show us the different fly fishing rod types, weights, casting techniques and various flies that were to be used.  Once you catch a beautiful rainbow, brown, or cutthroat trout and experience the thrill of reeling the fish in, you will be hooked!
Tumblr media
Fly fishing is a fun activity to do while building unforgettable lifelong memories.  I spoke with a family who was visiting Crested Butte, and they said they had grown up fishing, but had never fly fished and wanted to share the experience with their children.
Scenic River Tours offers full day and half day guided fly fishing trips either by wading or boating.  Enjoy this exhilarating experience that the whole family can enjoy.
Tumblr media
More on Guided Fishing Trips With Scenic River Tours: Scenic River Tours offers guided float fishing and walk/wade trips on over 1300 miles of rivers and streams in the Gunnison, Crested Butte & Lake City area, including the Gold Medal waters of the Gunnison, Taylor, Lake Fork, San Miguel & Rio Grande Rivers. They  also fish many fine lakes, reservoirs and smaller streams including the famed Taylor River catch & release area. They recently added fishing on Taylor Reservoir in a powerboat if your looking for the big lunkers far below the surface.

Tonight’s Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series Featuring: Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real
Tumblr media
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have recently finished touring and recording with the legendary Neil Young.  We are lucky to have him play here at the Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series tomorrow!  From a young age, Lukas has been around legendary musical artists that have helped shape his path as a musician.  His genuine personality and passion to create inspiring music will have you smiling and dancing.  Here is what he had to say!
When did you pick up the guitar?
I am not exactly sure when I picked up the guitar, but I do remember when I went to ask my Dad what he wanted for his birthday, and he told me that if I learn to pay the guitar, that would be the best present I could give him, so I did.
What was the first song you wrote?
I was 12 when I wrote my first song “You Were It” and it was put on my Dad’s record “It Always Will Be.
Can you tell me a little about your songwriting process?
I try to write a song as If I was having a conversation with someone while trying to be as honest as possible with what I am trying to say.  Writing down real conversational topics that people can relate to and that they think about.
Can you tell me a little about your decision to drop out of college and pursue music, what influenced that?
Other people who have interviewed me have stated that I was financially cut off from my parents when I decided to drop out of college, but that really is not the case.  I cut myself off because I wanted to make my own way.  My parents have been supportive of my decision to play music and if I ever needed something, they would help me out, but that idea that my parents cut me off after I dropped out is not true.
When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?
I had a lot of confidence as a musician as a kid.  I played guitar and wrong songs all day long as I honed in on my craft.  While people were out partying, I was at home spending time on my guitar trying to get better and better.  The goal for me has always been to get better.  It similar to continually beating your best score on one of your favorite video games.  The more you practice the better your get and it creates a ball of increasing momentum.  From there, opportunities have continued to open up.  It’s all about putting in the hard work!  When I play shows, I want people to be happy, let loose and have fun.
You say your dad has been a great mentor to you growing, what advice has he given you that has really stuck with you?
The biggest advice my Dad told me was to keep breathing.  When things seem like they are closing in on you to just keep breathing to throw those negative thoughts out the window.
What was it like working with Neil Young?
It was one of the most amazing experiences we have had as a band.  Neil is such an amazing person and touring with him was so much fun.
How do you challenge yourself as an artist?
The best way to learn is to play with others that are better than you.  The more you play with others the more you learn.  Theory is great, but playing with feel and energy with other is a creative experience.

Tomorrow’s Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series featuring Pokey LaFarge!
Tumblr media
The traditional and talented Pokey LaFarge has been tearing up the airwaves with his unique style and charisma.  After performing earlier this year at Bonnaroo Music Festival and Byron Bay Music Festival, Pokey LaFarge is ready to bring his beautiful songs to you during tomorrow’s Live! From Mt. Crested Butte Free Concert Series.  We got the opportunity to interview him before his performance and here is what he had to say:
When did you decide you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I would have to say about the age of 19 is when I decided I wanted to make this my career.
What was the first song you composed?
I wrote my first song called Arkansas when I hitchhiked at the age of 17 across the country.
How did hitchhiking and performing in the streets all across the country prepare you for where you are today?
It has totally prepared me for where I am today in all aspects.  Everything we have done has prepared us for where we are now.
Your relentless work ethic is noted in your bio.  Can you explain how this translates to writing and performing?
I write as often as I can, and if I cannot write, I am talking to a digital recorder.
You talk a lot about your relationship with your Grandparents as a child, how has that relationship shaped you as an artist and as a person?
It has opened the door for me to be interested and curious in exploration.
How do you challenge yourself as a writer?
Never be satisfied with the first thing that comes to your mind.
When was your first tour and how old were you?
My first tour was a month long and I was 19 years old.

Bike Park Update from Christian Robertson, Evolution Bike Park Manager:
International level cycling events have come to Crested Butte quite a few times.  They should, because in my biased opinion there are very few places that genuinely live, breathe, eat, and sleep bicycles like CB.  Even though it has happened before, I still get pretty darn excited when some of the best riders in the world roll into town.  This week round 5 of the Enduro World Series will be contested on the trails of the Gunnison Valley.  Enduro is the newest addition to the disciplines of mountain bike racing and has really added some of the most impressive riders to the start list.   Many of them have been riding the Evolution Bike Park the last few days and it has made for some awesome spectating.
Let's do a little bench racing.  Do you follow Enduro?  Do you have any favorite riders?  It may be time to go to your family roots and cheer for the country of your ancestry, or run with your favorite bike brand.  Me, I have to put my money on Jared Graves any time he rolls to the start line.  This blazing fast Australian really represents what Enduro is.  He is a multiple Four Cross World Champion, A BMX Olympian, has earned podium finishes in World Cup Downhill and is the reigning Enduro World Series Champ.  The dude has power and bike handling skill like you wish for and knows how to win.  He is also on a Yeti which I am sure you know is a Colorado company and that could be the extra juju needed to land on the top step.  The last time Graves raced in CB he won the Pro GRT Downhill race on Avery at the Bike Park, so he also has a little history here.  Graves is my bet for the top step.
For the women I am going to stick with Tracey Mosley.  Another rider with a strong DH background and she just knows how to be the fastest one to the bottom.  Being a spectator the last few days I have had a hard time telling the difference between the men and the women as they come through the final jump set at the bottom of Avery.  These ladies look very comfortable in the air and man they carry some speed down the hill.
This race gives us a rare opportunity to see some of the best bike handlers in the business shred our trails.  The easiest place to watch this go down will be at the Evolution Bike Park on Sunday.  Bring your friends and come up and make some noise in the woods.  It is going to be awesome to witness.
Alright, we have a number of things happening on the hill.  We have been working hard to drain puddles after the last blast of rain.  This year 10% chance of rain translates into 11 hours of steady moisture and has taken a few days to catch up.  We will still be picking away at maintenance on Westiside.  The Pump track in the base area will begin to look like something by the end of the week.  We have started a new trail off of Painterboy.  We have also received approval for the trail that will connect Westside to the Upper Loop.  A lot of balls in the air but when each of them hits the ground it will make for some excellent additions to the Evolution Bike Park.
There will also continue to be some periodic closures on Prospector and Woods.  There will also be some Closures on Meander for a glading project so please obey all signage for closed trails.
Summer is moving fast.  Get up here this weekend for the EWS.  I look forward to seeing you in the Bike Park.

Featured Hike #9: Guided Hikes on the Mountain
Tumblr media
Everyone loves to explore, but sometimes it is even more fun to explore with an expert. At Crested Butte Mountain Resort you can hike the mountain on your own or with a guide. Either way is a good time, but it is really cool to learn the history of the land and learn about all the wildflowers; I mean  we are the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Instead of spending your time in the books, learn something new from our guides! Worried about your ability level? That is no problem because we have hikes for beginners to expert hikers.
Tumblr media
There are Adventure Hikes, Summit Hikes and Wildflower Hikes, which are only offered Saturdays and Sundays. Adventure Hikes start at the Top of Red Lady and wander through wildflowers, aspens and evergreens over towards the Painter Boy area. Summit Hikes start at the top of the Silver Queen and follow the Peak hike trail to the summit. Wildflower hikes, don’t have a set route, and the route is usually figured out by the clients that sign up. For more novice hikers, the guides choose to walk towards Painter Boy area and for more advanced hikers the hike tends to head towards the West Side Trail, to the west of the Silver Queen Chair.
While on these hikes, the guide will give you a couple Crested Butte Wildflower Festival Handy Dandy Wildflower Guides.
Tumblr media
Our guide Rick Reavis is a Wildflower Festival Board Member and has been exploring and identifying native and introduced plants around the Crested Butte area since 1984. Rick makes the hikes extremely interactive and really fun for everyone.  We use sight, touch, smell and taste (only occasionally) to explore the different flora and fauna of Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
Tumblr media
Here are just a couple fun facts  I learned on my hike...
1.  The plant below is known as “potent little one” and is used by people to help with blisters while out in the wilderness.
Tumblr media
2. Alpine Sunflowers are known as The Old Man in the Mountain. It is really unique because it will be they live for a very long time before they bloom and once they bloom that is the sign their life is coming to an end. By the time it blooms it could have been growing for 40 years.
3.  Did you know the Indian Paintbrush is a parasitic flower, meaning it cannot survive alone? Also, throughout the valley you will see different colors of Indian Paintbrush. This happens because of the different pollinators. The reds and pinks are pollinated by butterflies and hummingbirds and the white ones are pollinated by moths and bats.
Tumblr media
To sign up call 970-349-4554 and you can learn some fun facts as well!

US Forest Service Accepts Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s Expansion Project Proposal
Environmental analysis to begin to look at project feasibility
Tumblr media
MT. CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. – July 21 – Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is looking towards the future. For the quintessential mountain resort in southwestern Colorado, the future means a major expansion of 500 acres for skiing, riding and biking. The proposal calls for two new chairlifts, a replacement of the North Face surface lift, more snowmaking on current ski terrain, and 15 miles of singletrack trail to add to the resort’s Evolution Bike Park. Recently, the resort received a letter from the US Forest Service’s Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forest District Office initiating an environmental review of the project, stating that they are “officially accepting project proposal components [in accordance with] the 2013 Master Development Plan”. The components to which the letter refers include:
Construction of three lifts, replacing one lift and adding two others
Construction of new intermediate and advanced ski trails and glades
New snowmaking infrastructure, covering 32 acres of existing terrain
Construction of approximately 15 miles of multi-use and mountain bike trails within the     current ski area boundary
A Special Use Permit boundary adjustment
This letter formally announces the Forest Service’s intent to begin the environmental scoping process for the project that will take place over the course of the next couple of years. CBMR, Forest Service and an expert third party contractor, SE Group will work together in the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), required by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) for the proposed improvements to be made on public lands.
“Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the entire valley are in the midst of some exciting times, where many new visitors are discovering what is so unbelievably special about the area,” explains Ethan Mueller, president of CBMR. “We feel these proposals will only strengthen those feelings, and we are looking forward to working with the USFS and our local communities on finalizing plans in a way that we can all move forward in a positive direction based on the strong relationships we have built over the years.  We are excited by the Forest Service’s recent acceptance of our proposal. While it will likely take a couple of years to gain approval for this plan and phase it into reality, we feel this will be a project to watch and enjoy for many years to come.”
What’s Next?
The NEPA process will take place over the next two years. This environmental review will start as the three entities identify any issues that may arise from the project. From there, environmental specialists will perform their reviews of the area, currently known as Teo Park and Teo Drainage. Once any and all impacts have been identified and addressed, the public comment period will begin and the EIS will be drafted. Throughout the NEPA process, the resort will continue to reach out and educate the local community and public officials on the project, as well as host open houses. The intention is to establish transparency so all stakeholders are kept informed.
“Over the course of the last three years, we have engaged community members and groups to educate the public on this proposal and feel that we have major support to move forward,” says John Sale, director of permitting and planning for CBMR. “The Teo Drainage proposal has been designed to develop new terrain that is adjacent to our existing infrastructure; improving and enhancing access for intermediate and advanced skiers into distinctive terrain that is unlike anything we currently offer.  Experts have long had the ability to drop into Teocalli Bowl and feel the sensation of an almost “backcountry” experience, now intermediate skiers and riders will be able to experience this remote area through a network of narrower trails and low angle glades in the Teo Drainage valley, all chairlift accessible.”
