OVERALL REVIEW OF NY AVENUE CAFE
The NY Avenue Café offers a breakfast and lunch menu. Serving freshly prepared dishes, drinks, and take-out.
Although its location is slightly hidden away from the crowd, NY Avenue Café is able to grab any mallgoer’s attention through its great presentation of their New York theme. Their use of a large Statue of Liberty copy shows their very dedication to the NY theme. Facing the River, the restaurant provides an enclosed aura making it good for meetings or for people who prefer a little bit of privacy. Inside, the NY Theme continues showcasing how it can both be a Restaurant and Café. And along with the yellowish lighting giving the feel of NY street lights, the newspaper stand on the side, the wall mounted photos, all come together providing a more authentic NY experience.
As we enter, we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and were even all ready to cooperate with our varying demands, all the while expressing their gratitude that amongst the other restaurants, we’ve decided to conduct our criqtique at their resto. Restaurant Owner/Manager JP Capanay has been very accommodating and cooperative.
Upon checking the Menu, the majority of promos available could hook up mallgoers to observe their menu, showing that there are many variations of products being offered such as burgers, rice meals, pasta, pizzas, and different drinks such as shakes, teas, and others. We were lucky enough to have tried most of their products, however, I have these to say.
Their Fil-American Friendship Breakfast menu consists of Tapsilog, Bangsilog, Baconsilog with a cup of creamy coffee or a glass of sweet iced tea. All of which are priced at Php 139.00. These dishes are served with a newly steamed rice with garlic or commonly known as sinangag and egg that absolutely complements the viand and shredded vegetables. The sweet savory and salty goodness of the tapa creates the right balance of flavor which brings delight to our taste buds. The bacon pleasantly crisp and slight saltiness to top off the flavor. As for the bangus, it was the most blissful combination of crisp, salt and vinegar mixed with the garlic rice. It is quite a delight to have it not just for breakfast but anytime of the day.
The NY Avenue Café also offers a variety of different burgers with bottomless iced tea. The sliders are at Php 159.00 whilst the Burger Meals are at Php 179.00. The patties in these burgers are sizzled with a flavorful explosion of juiciness and it is very well-seasoned while the bulk and fluffy interior of the buns on the burgers just creates a more heavenly taste. The NY Burger Royal or Waikiki proved to be a sublime dish for the sauce gives the patty, fresh lettuce and tomatoes a certain kick to it. The NY Burger with Caramelized Onions is a hearty burger with fresh lettuce, caramelized onions, cheese, tomato with a special bread that made it all the more harder to not to order another one. The NY Sliders and Breakfast Sliders are not one to be belittled for they prove to be as scrumptiously explosive in flavors as the big ones. However, upon tasting all the other variations of the burgers, one will realize that, although NY Café tries to differentiate their burgers through different sauces, adding of bacons or eggs, the difference isn’t that much tasted.
Most in our class agreed that the Pizza was great. Because it is. Upon first bite, I immediately tasted the burst of flavors. It all kicked in simultaneously. However, it also felt as though the flavors were trying to overpower each other, adding in the fact that the thin crust is very soft, it made chewing somewhat tiring, that it required much chewing because of the abundance of thick mozzarella. However, I would still recommend it to people who would try NY Avenue as the Pizza tastes unique, like it would leave a mark in the taste buds. Although priced at Php 390.00, it is still highly recommended that people try it.
THE SUMPTUOUS MEALS
NY Roast Beef (Php 220.00) – Although aesthetically pleasing, as well as the smell, upon first bite, it tastes familiar. So much so that when I tried it, I immediately reminisced my days in elementary whenever I would ask my parents to buy me Jollibee. Until I realized that, NY Avenue’s Roast Beef tastes a lot like that of Jollibee’s Burger Steak. And it isn’t just a simple resemblance. It is very, very similar, so much so that you’ll question what restaurant you’re actually in. It could’ve been okay, but the beef itself wasn’t great. It was difficult to chew making it frustrating, instead of being a fun déjà vu experience.
NY Breaded Porkchop (Php 220.00) – I immediately questioned what restaurant I was in when I tried it. It tasted like something out of a Filipino-managed Japanese Restaurant. It was like a combination of the typical Filipino breaded porkchop but with Japanese inspired sauce. The addition of atsara made it more confusing, like it were a Filipino dish inspired by the Japanese complete with the aesthetics of a Japanese rice bowl, but in an NY themed restaurant. It were a confusing meal.
Meaty Carbonara (Php 189.00) – The pasta itself was very thick and creamy, it tasted like legit pasta. However, that was it. It somewhat lacked flavor, as though it needed something more. But thanks to the addition of the meat, eating it together it was as though the tastes were complimenting each other. However, it’s downside is that, without the flavors complimenting each other, it tastes bland. A though it’s flavorless. But it’s an okay dish, just that it requires having to consume the pasta along with the meat.
Lasagna (Php 189.00) – Lasagnas are usually very creamy, and NY Avenue’s Lasagna is just right. It tastes very accurate, that it isn’t trying to be something else, as though it had been confident with what it is. The flavors had been very direct that the balance of flavors were very measured.
NY Sesame Salad (Php 190.00) – Upon first glance, it looks very appetizing. And upon first bite, the looks justify it’s taste. The saltiness blend well with the Nutty-like flavor. Moreover, the salad tastes very fresh and soft, giving off an impression that the salad had been thoroughly prepared.
DRINKS
Offering Unlimited Iced Tea, our class still tried the other drinks offered such as the Milkshakes, Smoothies and Milktea. The Vanilla Milkshake, priced at Php 129.00 doesn’t taste much like vanilla. Although it tries, it just tastes as though it is trying too much. It’s too creamy and foamy for a milkshake, like it had been made in a rush. It tastes more like melted ice cream than milkshake. However, for the Chocolate milkshake, this isn’t the case. It tastes like actual milkshake with the just right thickness. However, it tastes mediocre, as though it isn’t unique. Also, it leans more on the sweet side. For the Mango Smoothie (priced at Php 140.00), it tastes fresh, as it should. However, it is what it is, a Mango Smoothie, nothing more, nothing less. The drink that got our attention the most was the WIntermelon Milk Tea. Everyone in our class agreed as to how it had been too, tasting a lot like that of condensed milk. Moreover, it was also a thick beverage, although it is unique, it does not feel right, having known that most milkteas are not as thick. It is creamy, but not Milky. Lastly, of course, is the Iced Tea. With all honesty, our class expected it to be similar to that of popular powdered iced teas. But it was not, it tastes similar to that of Wendy’s making it unique and setting itself apart from various variations of Iced Teas.
Overall, our experience at NY Avenue had been very delightful. Their warm welcome to our class is very much appreciated, especially their willingness to cooperate. Special thanks to Sir JP Capanay for his immediate response to our queries prior to the conducted Food Review. But because of their meals leaning on the expensive side, it could be hard to endorse their restaurant to our fellow students. However, for a barkada, it is the right place to go. Their Pizzas and Burgers are highly recommended for everyone to try.
