even tho I get why it's said (and I've lamented it before too) I feel this whole 'booktok is book fast fashion' thing is so overplayed because the publishing industry is not even comparable to the fashion industry, which is so incredibly detrimental to the environment and relies on child/slave labour. like yes I don't think people need to buy 30 books at once but we can criticise overconsumption without watering down words like fast fashion, or implying consumption is equally as bad as humans rights abuses in the fashion industry. also, I feel this conversation is doing nothing but center the focus back on western countries. like ur literally hand wringing about books while children are losing their childhoods to the fashion industry rn!!!

Writing historical fiction is always like I think I hauve to read several more 700 page nonfiction books before I can write this paragraph

I spent five hours today drafting a new substack post (2,500 words). Then I divided it into two. Then I rewrote the first one to actually have a coherent story to tell. Then I decided everything was shit and I have nothing useful to say and I just wasted another day alive. Like who tf cares what I have to say?

Who FKING cares about me having a prolonged crisis over not finding reading very enjoyable anymore? That my mindset is so shifted by social media I literally don't know any of my own opinions anymore. And when I do, they're unpopular in spaces of glamorized overconsumerism. At least I got to try a lot of new functions.

its crazy that a lot of what we call 'video essays' these days are basically low budget documentaries on increasingly weird and niche topics. no network approval no tv budget just one guy with maybe a hired editor/writer and a couple of friends willing to read voice lines. and then they put it on youtube like its no big deal. insane.
