“Caption This” create your own meme
Google defines meme as “a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users“.  Due to the popularity of meme, a game What do you meme is even out in the market enjoyed by many.  Ever wonder how the game maker got the permission of the following individuals to use their images for the game?  While you’re trying to wonder how, care to provide captions for them?

Visual culture and your social life
Tumblr media
In one of our earlier posts, you learned about what visual culture is and how development of digital technologies that contribute to the making of visual culture. But how does visual culture play a part in your social life? We can examine its impacts in the use of social media and image-sharing to connect and build relationships with others. Rather than just serving as a keepsake, images function to communicate the present; where you are, who you are with, and what you are doing.
In Terms of Service: Social Media and the Price of Constant connection, Jacob Silverman writes, "Sharing itself becomes personhood, with activities taking on meaning not for their basic content but for the way they are turned into content, disseminated through the digital network, and responded to." We are in a time where the quality or content of an image you post can impact how others perceive you. For example, if you post a photo of a moldy piece of bread, someone might think you have bad eating habits. Perhaps a far stretch – but in reality, the response you receive from a post can impact your sense of self.

Do you remember when you got your first smartphone? How did it change the way you spent your time? How did it change the way you interacted with your family, friends, and peers? How did it change the way you see yourself?
Constant Connection
Being able to send and receive a high volume of images and videos at a fast rate is a fun way to stay connected. You can get a glimpse of how it’s like to live in a different part of the world or find out where your favorite musician likes to shop.
Our social interactions with one another have changed due to the dominance of images and digital technologies.

Be Aware
While digital technologies and visual culture continue to grow, staying connected can have it’s downsides:
Sharing images publicly and having an online presence can make you susceptible to cyberbullying
Constantly looking at images can be distracting
Intimacy issues with friends and family

Etiquette for Posting and Sharing Images
Etiquette for posting and sharing images
You know what they say, “there’s always a place and time for everything”.  With over 500 millions photos being shared on a daily basis on social media, it will be beneficial for everyone to follow the rules that the University of Washington came up with.
1.       Be aware of context – if you’re going to be posting a photo of yourself or anyone taken at a given event, make sure that the photo respects the actual event. For example, a happy photo of you with an acquaintance taken during a funeral does not need to see the daylight of social media.  Do not post this photo to solicit likes.  Your personal branding will be affected portraying you as an insensitive person.
2.       Don’t shame others – would you like it if a friend of yours posted an unflattering photo of you?  No one likes being shamed online, put yourself in the other person’s shoes before posting an unflattering photo that you think is funny, even if you have that person’s permission, it doesn’t give you the right to subject him/her to shame.
3.       Think before you copy, paste, and post – always think about copyright!
4.       No creepy photos – if the photos make you look suspicious in any way, do not post it.  It will devalue your personal branding.
5.       Always ask permission before tagging someone – it’s rude and impolite not to!  Maybe they don’t want to be associated with you or the photo you are about to post, so always ask first.
6.       Avoid the gore – not everyone has the stomach for it. Try to pick a decent photo to convey your message without traumatizing anyone.
7.       Be alert to your security settings – is your setting in public?  Do you want the whole world to see whatever it is that you will post? Always check your setting before posting any photo and ask yourself who you are targeting. Once it is there, it will always be there.
8.       Don’t overexpose your children – or other children for that matter.  Don’t post too much pictures of kids you “think” are doing adorable or funniest things. They cannot give you a consent yet, and it breaks rules #2 AND 5.
9.       Use discretion – don’t put everything on your social media.  Any kind of brief announcements can be made there, but direct them to the appropriate website to view the full information.    This promotes organization and avoid information overload to some of your followers who have no interest in your announcement.
10.   Remember, timing is everything – be sensitive with photos that you would post.  Always be conscious about what it is you are posting and your followers.  Don’t make a fool out of yourself like Justin Bieber on April Fool’s Day.

The Role of Social Media in Personal Branding
The role of social media in personal branding
Social media has been a big influence in our lives.  Not only does it allow us to stay connected with friends and family, it allows us to connect to the world outside of ours.  For the young minds, they say that it helps them become aware of issues and matters that they normally would not find at home and that they can also find comfort and advice that they desperately need by joining or following groups that they can relate to.  But the world of social media is so vast that any minds can easily get lost by the image or the portrayal that others want them to see.  Our own personal branding can be altered or skewed by all the influences it receives from social media.  A survey of U.S. teens showed that 40% of them feel the pressure to post content on social media that “makes them look good to others” and 37% of them only posts contents that will generate the most amount of likes.  Social media affects the way we showcase ourselves online. It creates fear for us that we only allow ourselves to post contents that we think is only acceptable for others. Other times it inspires us and allow us to shine and be true to ourselves.
When it comes to personal branding and the influence of social media, I believe that it is beneficial to everyone to have some sort of written information about us somewhere that is only visible to us.  From time to time we can take a look at it and see if we are following the same direction that we have designed for ourselves or if we are following someone else’s creation.

What is Visual Culture?
Tumblr media
With approximately 86 percent of Canadians owning smartphones, the use of digital technologies has become part of modern culture. A smartphone makes convenient to capture pictures and videos and instantly share with friends and family.
A picture says a thousand words …or saves you the trouble from writing a thousand words! Or says words a thousand different ways? Social media platforms primarily used for image-sharing such as Instagram and Snapchat are most popular among teenagers while older, text-heavy platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are on the decline. No doubt it can be more efficient to post an Instagram story rather than a Facebook check-in about where you are. However, it’s important to note that not everyone interprets a picture the same way.
Tumblr media
The example above is of a clenched fist. Some may interpret this a symbol for social justice; others may interpret this as a threatening gesture. How it is interpreted depends on who the individual is.
Semiotics is the study of signs – how something non-textual is interpreted differently or carries different meanings for others. Learn more about semiotics here.
Digital Manipulation
There are tools you can use to edit or remix photos. Programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator allow you to crop and cut. Even Instagram and Snapchat have filters to make portraits and selfies much more exciting!

What is Personal Branding?
PERSONAL BRANDING
‘Personal branding is about managing your name – even if you don’t own a business – in a world of misinformation, disinformation, and semi-permanent Google records.  Going on a date? Chances are that your ‘blind date’ has Googled your name.  Going to a job interview? Ditto.’
-          Tim Ferriss, Author of “The 4 Hour Workweek”
According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), personal branding is “what you’re known for and how people experience you.  It’s about bringing who you are to what you do and how you do it.”  As a high school student, it is important to start thinking about your digital presence online and how you portray yourself digitally. Nowadays, some college or university admission offices are relying on digital personal branding in the admission process.  Yariv Alpher, Executive Director of research at Kaplan Test Prep said that ‘social media can provide more authentic and holistic view of applicants beyond the polished applications.’   They could look at your social networks and see first hand your communication skill, technology skill,  or who you associate with, how you treat your followers, and also who you follow.  It conveys your personality, values and passions.
Most students use social media to stay connected with friends and family, but it can also be a tool for students to positively promote themselves and start preparing their future career.  If you start paying on your personal branding now, it can guide you with your career aspirations and help you take control of the right program you can take in post secondary schools.
For more information on how to build a unique and personal brand, PricewaterhouseCoppers has a recommended process using self-analysis.
