It's too bad Kishimoto got so obsessed with putting Orochimaru in that Kusagakure outfit. The outfits from their early introduction were such a vibe. The kimono's and yukata's....flowing in the wind with some fashionable snake on their shoulder, now that is a look! That's drama! Early Orochimaru had such a striking silhuette.

kind of a part 2 to my last post, but i do also have a lot of thoughts about orochimaru's relationship with physical pain and harm. they clearly experience and heavily dislike pain, judging from their constant agonized screaming after hiruzen sealed their arms. but it's not as simple as that; they also willingly stabbed themself in the hand hard, just to wake themself up.

to me, it seems like orochimaru takes some level of pride in inflicting pain upon themself, but shame in having others inflict it upon them. which is kind of an extreme example of a typical shinobi mindset: hurting yourself is proof that you're secure and safe enough to inflict damage on your primary weapon (your own body) and still be fine, whereas being hurt by others is a sign of weakness and failure in combat. stabbing yourself in front of your opponent and holding back any reaction is a power move. letting someone else stab you is the result of failing to defend yourself.

this also makes a lot of sense when you remember that they fought in two separate great ninja wars. using pain as a sort of grounding method in the midst of battle seems like something typical for situations like those, and using pain to release yourself from genjutsu is a thing that canonically works. overall, orochimaru using physical pain to merely wake themself up isn't all that surprising, considering the way the world was when they learned most of their fighting skills and tactics.

overall, their mindset regarding injury and pain seems to be "inflicting pain on yourself is a privilege and a survival skill that you need to be ready to do whenever the situation calls for it; having pain inflicted upon you by someone else means something has gone wrong"
