Woman, child caught stealing package off Albuquerque porch
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a known problem in our city: porch pirates stealing packages right off people’s front steps. But what one Albuquerque man caught on his camera, even caught him off guard. The homeowner said it’s sad to see a little kid committing a crime and an adult woman not stopping him.
"It’s just sad to see, especially from a little kid and for the mom to be okay with it," said homeowner Daniel Perez.
Perez lives in a neighborhood off Central and Atrisco. He said he was on his way home Tuesday evening when his home surveillance cameras captured something he wasn’t expecting: a child porch pirate.
"They kind of stopped in front of the house, the little boy is the one who pointed towards the house, then the mother kind of looked there," Perez said, describing the surveillance footage. "She kind of took a look at everybody else to see if anyone else was taking a look, so they started walking back down the street eastbound."
Seconds later, the kid came back.
"The kid picked up the package and took off running," said Perez.
The woman and the kid disappeared with Perez’s wedding gift from his fiancee’s family.
"It was a present from my fiance’s nina," said Perez. "I guess it was one of the higher-end coffee makers."
Albuquerque police are disturbed by the footage.
"Adults typically use kids in a crime, but what they don’t know is that it’s a felony," said Officer Simon Drobik.
As for Perez, he wants his wedding gift back and for the kid to understand this is wrong.
"It’s all about respect," said Perez. "If it’s not yours, don’t take it. I hope he can learn from this and hopefully he can do better."
Perez said he is now in the process of filing a police report.
Police said they don’t know who that woman is or her relationship to the child, but getting him to do the dirty work could put her behind bars for more than two years.

Paleta Bar expanding Albuquerque – Albuquerque Business First
Albuquerque is about to get a bit sweeter.
The Paleta Bar, which bills itself as a fresh gourmet Mexican popsicle shop, is adding two more locations in Albuquerque.
The success of its first location, which opened in June 2017 at 2325 San Pedro NE, encouraged the store’s owners to open two more locations in Albuquerque, they said. Its first new shop, located at the Shops @ Montano shopping center at Coors Boulevard and Montano Road NW, had its soft opening Monday and will have its grand opening over the weekend. The Paleta Bar also will open a third location later this month at the Cottonwood Mall.
View photos of The Paleta Bar’s new location in the accompanying slideshow.
The Paleta Bar was founded by co-founders Claudius Dipo Alam, Joel Marquez and Juan Carlos Estala, all under 31.
The shop offers various paletas, Spanish for popsicles, with toppings and flavors. The shop focuses on fresh ingredients with no artificial flavorings, colorings or preservatives.
Alam said sales at the first location were OK, but a viral video with nearly 4 million views shot sales to nearly $100,000 monthly.
"Sales were going insane after the viral video," Alam said.
Each space is about 1,200 square feet. Marquez said they would have liked to find a bigger spot, but that might have forced them to open just one location.
Alam said the goal is to eventually turn the business into a franchise model. The team has already fielded inquires in Houston, San Diego and Oklahoma City.
According to the New Mexico Restaurant Association, restaurants in the state generate $3.2 billion in annual sales and employ more than 85,000 New Mexicans.

Albuquerque firefighters get more tools to help save lives
Albuquerque firefighters now have three more thermal imaging cameras
Albuquerque, N.M. —
It can help save your life.
Albuquerque firefighters now have three more thermal imaging cameras.
They may be small, but their impact is huge.
“It could be the matter of finding someone that needs to be found and a matter of life and death,” said Albuquerque Fire Rescue Lt. Tom Ruiz.
Thermal imaging cameras pick up heat signatures and help firefighters see through smoke, darkness and other barriers.
“Even though it’s light out, you can see the difference between their body temperature and the ambient air around them,” said Ruiz.
Albuquerque firefighters use the cameras almost every day.
They are used for fires in homes and other buildings, allowing firefighters to spot fires that can’t be seen with the naked eye, and even aid in hiker rescues.
The cameras are also used for car crashes. They can help spot someone who has either been trapped inside a car or thrown from a car.
“It’s a vital tool and it’s one more way we can save lives and protect people in our city,” said Ruiz.

State audit to examine Albuquerque’s criminal justice system
J.R. Oppenheim
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In an effort to combat crime in the Albuquerque metro area, State Auditor Wayne Johnson said his office will look into possible gaps within the Second Judicial District.
The special audit focuses on seven agencies – District Court, Metro Court, the Albuquerque Police Department, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the Metropolitan Detention Center, the Public Defender’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office.
Johnson hopes the audit helps identify problems that negatively impact the criminal justice system, pointing to the rate at which suspects get released. He said auditors have already met with agencies regarding the audit.
"As auditors, we can look at each piece of the system and how those pieces mesh together,” Johnson said. "We can help mend the cracks that lead to horrible crimes like the one Taylor is accused of committing."
According to his office, the district attorney pursued detention in 16 percent of felony filings in 2017, and judges deny those requests about half the time.
Several of those released then commit other crimes, Johnson said. The auditor pointed to a suspect, Charles Taylor, accused of raping a 57-year-old in her home after his release on auto burglary charges.
"When judges and prosecutors don’t have all the facts because the systems aren’t communicating, criminals like Charles Taylor fall through the cracks," Johnson said. "The consequences are devastating for people’s lives and for the City of Albuquerque as a whole. We can do better."
Each agency has 60 days to contract with an independent public accountant for the audit. Once completed, Johnson will make recommendations to policymakers. Johnson said the audits will likely take five to six months to finish.
Johnson, a former Bernalillo County commissioner who Gov. Susana Martinez appointed as state auditor when Tim Keller became Albuquerque mayor, is running in this year’s election to retain his current position.

Albuquerque participates in nation’s largest single-day food drive
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Saturday was the largest single-day food drive in the country, as 50 letter carriers on 50 different routes throughout Albuquerque alone participated in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger event.
But it’s not easy work for the mailmen and women who haul in all those non-perishable items.
“It adds to their work for the day, but Saturdays are one of our lower volume days, so that’s the nice thing for them,” said Barbara Wood with the U.S. Postal Service. “They have time to get the food and it’s their way of giving back to the community.”
In addition to carrying and delivering your mail, they were also collecting and picking up blue bags distributed earlier in the month, now full of food for needy families.
“People use those all over the place, and some people add to it and put boxes and so forth. But most people will put out a couple bags,” Wood said.
The donations will eventually make their way to the Roadrunner Food Bank, where volunteers will spend the next several months sorting them all out. They’ll then be distributed to food banks across the state, getting them through the next month or so.
With New Mexico ranked as one of the hungriest states in the nation, Roadrunner officials say food drives like this help keep their shelves stocked at a time when they constantly need to be replenished.
“Keep in mind, as kids get out for the summer months, we see an increase in hunger. And that’s because low-income families who have been able to qualify for free and reduced lunch and breakfast programs at school, when they’re not at school they don’t have access to those additional meals,” Warwick said.
If you missed your letter carrier, but still want to donate, the United State Postal Service says it will keep those donation bins out at their offices a little longer. You can also make a donation – of food, time or cash – directly to Roadrunner Food Bank.

Albuquerque man accused of ‘prostituting’ 7-year-old daughter
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Police say a 7-year-old was the victim of human trafficking, and it was uncovered thanks to those at her school.
A man is accused of ‘prostituting’ his 7-year-old daughter, making her dress up in heels and makeup to perform sex acts on other people.
A teacher at Lew Wallace Elementary School saw something wrong and spoke up; but there are many questions that remain, as Albuquerque Police had multiple reports about the family over the past two years.
Last month the nurse at Lew Wallace Elementary reported to agents with the Attorney General’s office that a child at the school was possibly being trafficked.
She said a 7-year-old girl missed school a lot and often made strange comments like, "Mom and I hustle."
The nurse then told the AG’s office that last November, the girl showed up to school dirty, and smelled of urine.
A teacher took her to the bathroom to change and found dried blood in her underwear, and believed she had been sexually assaulted.
The AG’s office says Albuquerque Police investigated after the underwear incident, but determined there was "nothing to cause concern of abuse."
Shortly after that in November 2017, school staff remembered the girl getting dropped off in "high-heel shoes, press on nails, her hair done and she was wearing makeup."
James Stewart
The girl’s father, James Stewart, has now been arrested for trafficking.
The little girl has been taken into CYFD custody and told investigators Stewart made her touch men and women under their clothes, and in exchange he got weed and pipes.
The little girl also said her mother would take her to secret parties, identified as "strip clubs" in a criminal complaint.
She says she was forced to dress up, in heels, and wear lots of makeup.
The mother, Teri Sanchez, is also under investigation but hasn’t been charged yet.
CYFD Secretary Monique Jacobson says the school did everything they’ve been trained to do. She also says they are now going back to look into every interaction they had with the family.
KRQE News 13 also reached out to APD who had looked into reports of this family. A spokesperson says they are looking into their side of the investigation, all the reports and what happened.
According to the complaint, the mom would have the girl beg on the streets for money, and the dad would have the girl pick men’s pockets.

Couple robbed at gunpoint at NE Albuquerque park
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Just down the street from Albuquerque High School, Netherwood Park has been a popular hangout spot for teenagers, neighbors, and Gilbert Griego and his wife.
"Every night we’d come and go for a walk throughout the neighborhood," he said. "Nothing’s ever happened."
It’s been like that for years – a peaceful spot for a stroll. That is, until two Sundays ago when they pulled up to the park like normal.
Only what happened next was not the norm.
"We heard a tap on the window and we thought it was one of our friends because we have people living in the neighborhood. All of a sudden, my wife’s door opens and I hear, ‘Get out,’ and I feel a gun to my head," Griego said.
He said two men demanded the couple’s phones and their car keys.
"I don’t think they took my car because it’s a stick shift, and when they looked at my car they looked confused," he said. "Within a couple seconds I think they realized they couldn’t drive a standard."
Griego said when he posted online about what happened to him, others began to post similar crimes happening to them as well. Except instead of stealing a car, this person tried to steal their phones.
"Peoples’ front doors are right here," Griego said. "You don’t think that would happen. That’s why we come here, too, because there are eyeballs everywhere. But that night there wasn’t – I don’t know why."
Albuquerque Police say besides the armed robbery involving the Griegos, there were six other calls for service at Netherwood Park this year. None of them involved evidence of criminal activity, though there was a report about a suspicious vehicle dealing drugs at the park, and officers have taken time on their own to check things out.

Hyatt Regency Albuquerque executive chef Phil Beltran’s tribute – Albuquerque Business First
If you’ve ever dined at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, then you probably know the work of Chef Phil Beltran.
Beltran, who retired as the executive chef of the Downtown hotel last year, died April 13. He was at the Hyatt Regency for almost 10 years.
Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Beltran started a lunch food truck after serving five years in the U.S. Navy at the end of the Vietnam War. He then earned a culinary arts degree and started as a cook at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles in 1989, according to a provided biography.
Beltran worked his way up to executive sous chef at the Hyatt Downtown Los Angeles in 2001, before being promoted to executive chef of Hyatt West Hollywood in 2005.
Linda Durand, administrative assistant at the Hyatt Regency, said Beltran believed in giving back and worked with aspiring chefs.
"He was a great guy," Durand said. "He really mentored those that worked under him. He believed in empowering them."
In addition to good food, Durand said Beltran appreciated mariachis and tequila.
Beltran is survived by Dolores, his wife of 39 years, and a daughter.
"They were a great couple," Durand said. "They were active in their church, and both worked in programs taking care of the needy. They were about giving."
He was instrumental in the Dia de los Muertos Celebration hosted annually at the Hyatt, benefitting the Central New Mexico Community College Culinary Arts scholarship. He was also a two-time Albuquerque Chef Knockout winner. The charity event benefits the Storehouse, the Albuquerque food pantry.
A GoFundMe page has been created to create a scholarship fund in his honor.
Durand said Beltran, who died of a heart attack, was working on taking better care of himself after retiring. She said he had recently lost 20 pounds, was walking every day with his wife and had taken up golfing, something she laughingly said she never thought he’d have the patience for.
The hotel hosted a life celebration for Beltran last week, where sous chefs who had been under his tutelage prepared food they learned from him.

Immigration authorities criticize Albuquerque measure
The Associated Press
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Federal immigration authorities are criticizing an Albuquerque measure to strengthen immigrant-friendly policies, saying the proposal would undermine public safety and make New Mexico’s largest city a safe haven for people living in the country illegally.
The Albuquerque City Council voted Monday to bar federal agents from prisoner transport centers without a warrant and prevent city workers, including police, from asking about people’s immigration status.
The bill’s sponsors describe it as an attempt to reaffirm the city’s "immigrant friendly" status at a time when the Trump administration is seeking to crack down on unauthorized border crossings.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said Wednesday that the agency seeks "straightforward cooperation" from law enforcement agencies to enforce immigration laws, and that "misguided municipal directives" undermine those efforts.
The bill still must be approved by Mayor Tim Keller.

USPS: Albuquerque 32nd for dog bite cases involving carriers
Photo: US Air Force
Marian Camacho
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It’s National Dog Bite Prevention week and the Postal Service wants to remind people of some precautions to take.
In 2017, there were 40 dog bites involving a postal service carrier in the state of New Mexico making it 32nd overall in the United States. 22 of those cases were in Albuquerque alone.
In total there were 6,244 cases of dog bites of postal service carriers last year. While that number seems high, USPS officials say that’s more than 500 fewer cases than in 2016.
“We’re encouraged by the decrease in dog attacks,” said U.S. Postal Service Safety Director Linda DeCarlo. “The totals are still too high, but we’re confident that with continuing education and dog bite prevention training, along with advancing technology, we can keep more people safe and keep attacks trending downward.”
Houston, Texas was found to have the highest amount of dog bite cases involving mail carriers with 71 bites reported last year and 62 the year prior.
The Postal Service has been working on ways to cut down on the number of dog bite incidents, using technology to alert carriers to the presence of dogs on their routes. The Package Pickup application on USPS.com asks customers to indicate whether there are dogs at their residence. The information is then provided to carriers delivering mail in that area.
As a part of National Dog Bite Prevention week, the postal service is also reminding residents of the following:
Place dogs in a separate room and close the door prior to opening the front door for a carrier. Parents and guardians, remind children not to take mail directly from carriers in the presence of the family dog as the animal may see it as a threat. If a carrier feels threatened, residents may be asked to pick up mail from the local Post Office until the carrier is ensured the pet is no longer a threat.

Albuquerque man accused of abusing and killing puppy
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. KRQE – – Witnesses say he abused a puppy and dumped its body in a field. Now, an Albuquerque man will stay behind bars until trial.
It is still unclear how the puppy died, but at least two people tell police they saw Shaun Ferguson abusing it.
According to a criminal complaint, Ferguson was angry that his wife, Jessica, was not speaking to him early last month.
Then, a family member told Jessica that she heard Ferguson would kill the couple’s dogs if she did not talk to him.
Jessica reportedly went to their hotel room, off Central and Tramway, out of fear for her pets. She arrived to find one of the dogs in the parking lot but did not see their 9-week old puppy.
A man who lives in the complex later told police that he saw Ferguson beating the puppy and dragging it through a field by the hotel.
The witness said he heard a gunshot around the same time, but did not see Ferguson holding a gun.
Jessica told police Ferguson may have had her missing handgun.
Police later found the puppy dead in the field and arrested Ferguson.
In court on Saturday, Judge Renee Torres ruled he will be behind bars.
Ferguson’s sister-in-law told police that she had previously seen Ferguson punch the puppy in its face and then held it up by its neck chain.
Ferguson denied any abuse and told police he had surrendered both dogs to someone that day. He faces one animal cruelty charge.
Ferguson has no criminal history here in New Mexico.
