Hello, this is my reflective blog for my first semester at LJMU. Here I'll post about my lectures and workshops, anything I find particularly inspiring or interesting relating to my current projects as well as updates of my work.

This is a piece of work I found through Pinterest. I really like the idea of viewer controlling the pins, and the technology behind it seems incredibly complex and clever. I'm unsure what relevance the words used have to the media and the concept, but it seems like a really fun interactive piece. If I were to be critical it would be to say that this type of thing would only really work in a exhibition environment, and that after a while the novelty of it would wear off. It's not something that I would return to to look at again a week later. Nonetheless I think it's a really interesting concept.

Today I have been sourcing a greater variety of material for my SDP, editing and adding in appropriate sound or music for comical effect. A lot of the clips I have found feature animals, so I hope to find more scenery-based or scenario-based clips to balance out the content. I feel pretty confident about the material I have chosen and I think it will make the experience fun and interesting for the viewer.

Professional Development Week - DESIGNIVAL
Designival was an interesting experience, and I feel that I am starting to get a sense of what it's like to go to design conferences after attending this and AGI. Set in Camp & Furnace in the middle of the creative sector of Liverpool, it seemed like the best environment for such an event after being to Inprint Print Fair upstairs not long ago.
The event began with the first speaker, Matt Web from Berg talking about the recent projects the studio have been working on. I hadn't heard of Berg before, as their work seems to be involved a lot with emerging technologies which I have only just started to learn about. One project in particular I liked that he mentioned was 'Little Printer', which I think I had seen something similar before in a visiting lecture last year. The device ran through an arduino set up and was connected wirelessly to the internet, printing little messages like a receipt. I thought the device was really cute, and the concept was simple, using emerging technologies to create a product that was interactive and fun for the user. This type of technology has started to interest me a lot lately since my DMC self directed project, and I have found myself learning about coding in Processing and using different techniques to creatively solve a problem. What I like in particular was that Web and his team designed Little Printer with the intent of it being a concept, a one-off. But someone somewhere was interested enough that it became a fully-manufactured and marketed product, shipped world wide. I think this is quite charming and makes doing something different and taking risks really exciting and rewarding.
It was also interesting learning about Berg's internal set up as a studio. Matt went on to describe how they were split in to a platform team, interacting with clients, users and consumers and reacting to the feedback from that audience for the betterment of the studio and it's future projects. The second team, the development team dealt with the concept and physicality of the project, designing and developing often using technologies such as arduino and raspberry pie (both of which I knew a little about previously).
Another topic Matt heavily stressed was 'Silicon Roundabout', which seemed to be a creative-technology support network for studios in their area. He seemed to be really keen on the idea of studios being aware of each other, not competitive but supportive.
An attendee asked a question about Berg's creation process, Matt replied that it was a four step process: that the idea generation was a lengthy process that needed a lot of time to develop, then material exploration such as drawing and experimenting, production, then finally fine tuning. He called this "thinking through making".
Our second speaker for the evening Paul Davis, I felt for me was talking in circles and not saying much of anything. I felt, like Peter Saville, he tries too hard to be against the grain, working in advertising but stating "I think a lot of advertising is crap". For me these types of designers, illustrators, artists our whatever they like to call themselves next, are like celebrities and that too much time and attention is given to them at events such as this. I'm sure for fans of their work it would be a dream come true to see them, but these 'giants' of the design world never seem to present me with any golden nugget of advice that will help me in my career path. Overall I felt for me his talk was entertaining but a bit lacking.
Our final speaker, Eric Kessels Creative Director of communications agency KesselsKramer, gave us a really interesting talk, starting out with the agencies most celebrated client for over a decade,The Hans Brinker Hotel in Amsterdam were KesselsKramer is based. Their clever advertising and branding of the hotel has seen the business become a renowned tourist attraction by utilising it's bad reputation as a clever marketing tool, empowered by it's humorous advertising. I found this really interesting, exciting and inspiring, a prime example of how thinking in new ways can make something really unique and successful. Eric then went on to describe some of his own personal hobbies, photography collection and cataloguing, which were interesting if a little long-winded.
Overall I enjoyed the event, but for me I felt as though I was expecting to take away more from it, but it has given me a taste for what it is like to attend creative events. I hope to attend more occasions like this in the future to expand my awareness of the industry.

Timetable
I have decided to create a timetable that will help me to plan and execute the project efficiently. Because my project has a simple concept, and once I have figured out the mechanics of the Isadora Actors I should have enough time to focus on getting the content spot on.
Week 1 - Isadora Actor Mock-ups
Week 2 - Isadora Actor test- refine/develop
Week 3 - Source content material
Week 4 - Source content material
Week 5 - Test, refine/develop
Week 6 - Final setup
Week 7 - Test, record & reflect
Hopefully I can stick to this timetable which will ensure the project runs smoothly.

Food Miles calculator - Food Miles is a term used when measuring the distance traveled when transporting food from place of production to where it's being sold/consumed.
It even keeps a compiled list of foods that are searched for a lot - I think this website will be really useful for measuring the distances of my food.

“This is a single deck of 54 cards and logo design by me appeared. Design flies, diamonds, hearts and spades instead of using symbols to understand the symbols has been to create new symbols. Based on the concept of logo design that I created whimsical illustrations that have identified and encouraged. In general, a certain lineart made using the technique of vector based graphics language that supported the program. Take the time to complete the printed version of the design lasted 3 months.”
