"marriage is the ONLY way to get these protections" "there is NO WAY to hack a legal arrangement to cover everything that marriage grants" "kiddos you don't remember what it was like before we could get married, we finally got rights because we could get married" Okay But You Recognize Why That's Bad, Right. Like that is really, really bad that you have to enter a specific type of relationship to get legal rights. That is A Problem. You recognize that that is Not A Good Thing, Right

yes, i very much agree! said it in another reblog but i like that even though he hand waves the romance bit, he’s great at fleshing out the real lived differences between the characters in that relationship - sam and sybil’s difference in class being a big one, angua’s struggle w being “the dog” in the rs and also coming to terms w carrot’s ’personal is not the same as important’, etc.
i guess it’s just that without the romance bit also being fleshed out, it’s not so compelling to me? like my favourite canon couple is definitely moist and adora, bc even though it’s still pretty handwaved, moist had this moment of “lying is part of who i am, and in this whole city, in my whole life, you’re the only one who can see through my lies to the real me. which means you know im a fake.” i feel like that really helped their rs land w me, but it’s maybe more subtle in the other relationships
weirdly something that i really like about discworld is that vimes is Not a wife guy. like obviously he loves sybil and sam but in a lot of the watch books you see him really struggle with the fact that his work is what he loves and values over everything else (eg in night watch where he repeatedly calls the watch house ‘home’ and then berates himself for it, “you didn’t think about sybil until thought three”)
it just feels very true to life like how vimes has to reconcile the fact that he has become wealthy and powerful and can’t act like a regular watchman anymore

for sure, i think vimes loves both sybil and young sam, given that night watch and thud are respectively predicated on his love and personal dedication to them, with the silver cigar case/where’s my cow.
i’m thinking more of the ‘wife guy’ characterisation in fiction/irl where the defining trait is a guy that makes loving his wife a very big and prominent part of his personality, which seems to both come easily and naturally.
what i really enjoy is that pterry makes it a point to show that struggle though, that for vimes his first love and passion is for the city and he has to intentionally balance that out by making time for his family - like his reasoning for reading to sam at six every day or the way he tries to balance family time and mystery solving in snuff. i think also in his marriage to the richest woman in the city, pterry shows them gently disagreeing on a lot of things due to their difference in class/wealth/upbringing, which honours both characters by not ignoring that
like you said, the idea of ‘personal is not the same as important’ - that’s really counter to the conventional idea of a wife guy imo. and that’s a really interesting idea to me bc it’s so core to vimes as a character so seeing the consequences of that and the adjustments he has to make, makes his dedication to the city feel realer

this is a tangent but i also just feel like romance was never really terry prachett’s thing when writing discworld. like every male protagonist seems to have a plucky lady counterpart (sybil, adora, angua, sacharissa) that is eventually expected to date the guy, but it’s curiously lacking in chemistry like he kind of throws them together and then hand waves the rest

I'm now fascinated by the wide range of emotions apparently being expressed by different iterations of this emoji. Like, how is this:
Tumblr media
remotely the same emotion as this:

Now I'm wondering how many internet arguments begin because everybody's understanding of tone was being skewed and undermined by the fact that they were all on different operating systems and therefore wearing different faces depending on who was looking at them.

on the one hand, I'm really enjoying the pendulum swing away from minimalism and towards the kitschy, colorful 70s vibes with all the wavy lines and bubble letters. it's fun. on the other hand it's not really kitschy. it still seems very influenced by minimalism. the color palette is a little too careful, the tchotchkes in the coffee shops are too selectively chosen and placed. you can have one little molded glass rooster next to this weirdly shaped but still very elegant ceramic vase. tee hee isn't that so cute and quirky. it reminds me of Chris Fleming "those aren't freaks, those are attractive people with carefully vetted idiosyncrasies"

actually since I'm already being mean about it, the self congratulatory shit discworld fans do where they take every opportunity to talk about how good and nice and not annoying they are compared to other fandoms is insufferable. can you just have kin wars or something instead please.
