The studio was quiet, except for the sound of gentle notes played on a piano. It was came from a recording in the corner of the room, softly playing Chopin’s Nocturne no.20 in C Sharp Minor. It was not quite the same as a live accompanist, but it would do. 

The studio was actually a yoga studio, attached to a small gym that belonged to the hotel Chloé was staying at for the duration of yet another medical convention. But the space was just the right size and stepping out onto the vinyl flooring in her bare feet felt no different from the studio space she was used to at home. As she began to dance, if she closed her eyes for just a moment, she could imagine she was back in Montréal.

She had left the hotel room she was sharing with one Dr. Angela Ziegler, as they often did, under the pretence that she needed to go over her talk for the next morning. The talk, however, was the last thing on her mind as she drifted across the studio floor. The less she thought about, the easier it was to simply glide and let her body take her where it wanted to. Whether going over a familiar routine or simply improvising along to the music, Chloé abandoned all focused thought. It was like meditating, only with constant movement. After so many years, ballet came to her almost as naturally as breathing. And with little interest in performing for anyone, she paid little mind to her technique. Of course, it was as painstakingly perfected as everything else she did, but Chloé no longer cared. She only cared about how freeing it was just to dance.

For as much as Chloé knew about movement and the human body, she knew equally little about human emotion. It eluded her in ways she didn’t understand. She was stunted when it came to feeling that emotion. Yet when she danced, she thought she might be that much closer... to feeling, to expression, to knowing what it was like to truly be like everyone else. She could feel the music from the tips of her fingers, extended outwards, to the tips of her toes, lifting her up off the floor. She knew the human body so well, she could break down each movement until it was no more than simple mechanics. But she didn’t, as that would defeat the purpose of it all.

Chloé wasn’t certain how long she had been gone, but she finally came to a graceful pause when she saw a figure in the doorway, just out of the corner of her eye. She expected someone from the hotel staff, here to tell her that the facilities were closed for the night, but instead she found herself staring into Angela’s watchful eyes.

               “How long have you been standing there?”

Her own words do not seem to concern her in the slightest.

Masking is her speciality. Putting on the right face, showing the correct emotion, making others see what they want to see is what she does. So she also knows when someone is trying to do so poorly. Vaguely smudged makeup, tears still clinging to the corners of her eyes... Chloé doesn’t say anything, but she can see the upset on Angela’s face plain as day.

She takes a step closer, brings her hands to the other woman’s face, and wipes the rest of the tears away without a word. Tucking a lock of blonde hair behind the other’s ear, her smile almost looks a little more genuine now. Chloé doesn’t return it, but her unusually neutral expression does seem somewhat gentler than usual.

                “If it helps, you might have fooled somebody else... from several feet away.”
