Why I Chose to Live a Plastic-Free Life – And Why You Should Too
Introduction
I still remember the first time I saw a sea turtle struggling to swim, its body entangled in a plastic bag. I was on a family vacation at the beach, and as I watched the rescue team try to free the poor creature, I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. It dawned on me that the plastic waste we casually throw away doesn’t just disappear—it ends up choking marine life, polluting our oceans, and harming the planet. That moment changed me. I realized that I was part of the problem, but I could also be part of the solution.
As I started researching more about plastic pollution, I was shocked to learn the extent of the crisis. Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic find their way into our oceans, affecting marine ecosystems and even human health. I read heartbreaking stories of whales found dead with stomachs full of plastic bags, birds feeding plastic to their chicks, and entire coral reefs suffocating under layers of plastic waste.
But the problem wasn’t just out in the oceans—it was right in front of me, too. I began to notice how much plastic I used in my daily life. From grocery bags to water bottles, from food wrappers to disposable utensils—plastic was everywhere. And most of it was designed to be used once and then discarded, with little thought given to where it would end up.
That’s when I knew I had to make a change. I made a conscious decision to reduce my plastic consumption and support initiatives working to combat this crisis. That’s how I discovered the Plastic-Free Future campaign—a movement dedicated to raising awareness, pushing for policy change, and empowering individuals to make sustainable choices. And today, I want to share why this campaign matters, not just for the environment, but for all of us.
Why This Campaign is Important
1. Plastic is Everywhere—And It’s Destroying Our Planet
Did you know that 91% of plastic isn’t recycled? Instead, it ends up in landfills, oceans, and even in the air we breathe. Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans, suffocating marine animals and disrupting ecosystems.
I used to think that one person’s actions wouldn’t make a difference. But the truth is, every piece of plastic we refuse, every reusable item we choose, and every voice we raise creates a ripple effect. The Plastic-Free Future campaign is fighting this crisis by pushing for policies that reduce plastic production, encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable practices, and educating people on the power of small daily changes.
2. Plastic is Harming Our Health
It’s not just wildlife that suffers—plastic pollution affects humans too. Studies show that microplastics have infiltrated our water, food, and even the air we breathe. Scientists have found plastic particles in human blood and lungs, raising serious health concerns. We don’t yet know the long-term effects, but do we really want to wait to find out?
By supporting the Plastic-Free Future campaign, we are demanding safer alternatives, better waste management, and a healthier future for ourselves and our children.
3. A Plastic-Free Future is Possible—And It Starts with Us
Switching to a more sustainable lifestyle might seem daunting, but I promise you—it’s easier than you think. Since making the change, I’ve swapped plastic bags for cloth totes, carry a reusable water bottle everywhere, and choose plastic-free packaging whenever possible. These small habits add up, and if millions of people take similar steps, we can drastically cut down plastic waste.
Businesses and policymakers are starting to listen, but they need public support to make meaningful changes. The more we demand sustainable products, the more industries will be forced to adapt. The Plastic-Free Future campaign is our collective voice, advocating for a cleaner, safer world.
Join the Movement—Here’s How You Can Help
Making a difference doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some simple yet impactful ways you can contribute to a plastic-free future:
1. Reduce Your Plastic Use
Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bag everywhere you go.
Say no to plastic straws, cutlery, and takeaway containers by bringing your own.
Buy in bulk to reduce plastic packaging and opt for refill stations when possible.
Choose products with eco-friendly packaging or those made from biodegradable materials.
2. Support Businesses That Prioritize Sustainability
Look for brands that use minimal or recyclable packaging.
Support companies that promote a circular economy by offering refill programs.
Choose products made from recycled or sustainable materials.
Encourage your favorite businesses to adopt plastic-free policies.
3. Educate and Inspire Others
Share what you’ve learned with friends, family, and colleagues.
Post about your plastic-free journey on social media using hashtags like #PlasticFreeFuture and #SayNoToPlastic.
Organize community events or workshops to raise awareness.
Get involved in local clean-up events to remove plastic waste from nature.
4. Advocate for Change
Sign petitions to ban single-use plastics and push for stricter recycling regulations.
Write to policymakers urging them to implement sustainable policies.

Microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles that enter the food chain through contaminated water and seafood, have been linked to potential health risks for humans. Reducing plastic pollution minimizes exposure to harmful chemicals found in plastics, leading to better public health outcomes and a safer environment for future generations.
4. Economic Benefits
Plastic waste management is costly for municipalities and businesses, often requiring expensive cleanup operations and waste disposal systems. A shift toward sustainable alternatives can reduce these costs and promote eco-friendly industries such as biodegradable packaging, sustainable textiles, and waste recycling. Additionally, cleaner environments boost tourism, benefiting local economies.
5. Climate Change Mitigation
The production and incineration of plastic contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating climate change. By reducing plastic dependency and supporting sustainable manufacturing, the campaign helps lower carbon footprints and reduces environmental damage associated with plastic production.
6. Increased Public Awareness and Responsibility
A well-informed society is more likely to make conscious choices that benefit the environment. Through education and community engagement, the campaign fosters a culture of sustainability, inspiring individuals to adopt plastic-free habits and advocate for stronger environmental policies.
How Public Relations Practitioners Influence the Campaign’s Success
Public relations practitioners play a pivotal role in the campaign’s success by:
Crafting compelling messages that resonate with different audiences.
Leveraging media channels to maximize campaign visibility.
Building strategic partnerships with businesses and policymakers.
Managing crisis communication in case of misinformation or public skepticism.
Overcoming Challenges Through Public Relations

On Wednesday, I woke up 15 minutes late to workout, causing me to head out to the traffic 10 minutes late. On the way to my college, the traffic was bad and slow. By the time I've reached the parking spot, I went up to the building and to the 14th floor or tower. When I'm there, I was confused for a second, why isn't the place yellow like I expected the place it would be? In the end, I went to the other building rather than the main campus, and not wanting to be even later than anymore, I brisk-walked the whole way there in under 8 minutes.
p.s. i didn't know i was that tired.

Been spending the last few days grinding reports, articles, essays, short stories and my own stories on Word Document. My fingers have been non-stop on both laptop on phone to type words all around the documents. Although it's tiring, I have Spotify to inspire and motivate me to the core for the work throughout the days. Premium for the solo-song loop!
p.s. I love Lauv and dhruv songs. :)

In the afternoon, my family and I went out to eat Ramen. The soup is so rich on my tongue and the noodles were firm to the texture. Most importantly, it was the side dish that got my full attention on, and it was the potato crab salad. The mashed potatoes were seasoned to the best balanced salt and pepper taste; it wasn't too salty nor too strong, it was perfect.

In the morning, I fetched both my mom and my grandma to the supermart in Bandar Puteri, Puchong. We bought seafood—fish, prawns, scallops and more. The bags were heavy, but I'm obliged to carry it for them. Before we hit the road to get home, I also bought Takoyakis to eat for a late lunch. It was yummy. Today wasn't as productive, but it was still fun to spend time with my family.

Waking up at 7am to workout. Got ready by the time it reached 8:30 am to head out for breakfast in one of the nutritional smoothie stores. I have been doing this routine for almost a month now, and I've been more active and happy since. I do hope that I can keep on doing this for the rest my life without fail. And I'm not going to lie, the results has been going slow, but great.

Today, my family invited our closed ones to a small birthday party for my dad and sister. The location were at Kuchai Lama. We had steamboat, but used individual pots for the food. Everyone had their own little hot pot in front of them. Since I'm still undergoing a diet, I controlled myself and had fun with my cousins instead. Tonight was superb and fun. Everyone was happy and content as they left. I really love them and hope to meet them soon again.

On Saturday, my family and I went to a nearby restaurant named "Shin Sushi." The food were delicious! They had reasonable prices and the services were great as well. The only sad thing is that my sister went to her friend's house to stay overnight. Though, I did tease her about the food we ate and she was excited to enjoy it with us the next time we visit again.

On Saturday, I went to my cousin's house to have some fun together. He told me that his family has adopted another new cat from the animal shelter. The cat was so fragile and small in his little cage. He wouldn't get out from the cage, only shivering visibly on the soft, white sheet. After some time of trying to feed him by hand, he came out and became slightly affectionate with us.
By the time the cat was comfortable on my lap, the time has already come to an end and I had to return back to my home. I hope he will remember me when I come to visit the house next time.

I had a wonderful weekend last week. My family and I went to a restaurant named "Xiao Xiang Zi" in Cheras. Although the journey was long and the traffic was a bit traffic jam, it was worth it in the end. I drove us there and ate steamboat and some fried food that was chosen by customers at the refrigerator area. The services that were provided were great, professional yet friendly. At 10pm, there would be stage performers singing for us.
I'm not going to lie, my family and I are planning to visit the same shop again sometime soon. However, this time, it will be at a closer franchise in Bandar Puteri.
