Former SCO Secretary-General and Central Asia AI Association President Visits Shenzhen Furniture Association

On August 19th, Mr. Vladimir Norov—former Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, former Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, President of the Central Asia Artificial Intelligence Association, and Honorary President of the China Industry Overseas Development Association—visited the Shenzhen Furniture Industry Association. His visit aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the Association and the broader development of Shenzhen’s furniture industry.

Norov: Deeply study the successful experiences of Shenzhen's reform and opening up and the Shenzhen Home Furnishing Association

As the Belt and Road Initiative progresses and Chinese brands expand globally, economic and trade ties between China and Central Asian countries have grown increasingly close. Mr. Vladimir Norov is well acquainted with Shenzhen. In recent years, the Uzbekistan–China Investment Forum, organized by Uzbekistan's Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade, has been held in Shenzhen. President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan also visited Shenzhen to attend the forum. Uzbekistan is actively strengthening economic and trade cooperation with China.

This was Mr. Norov’s first visit to the Shenzhen Furniture Industry Association, where he gained a thorough understanding of the city's furniture industry development. Chairman Hou Kepeng accompanied Mr. Norov on a detailed tour, introducing the association and the industry's growth. Shenzhen’s furniture industry has transformed from a traditional strength into one that is fashionable and creative. This success stems from a combination of Italian design and Chinese manufacturing, and a long-standing commitment to original design, high standards and quality, and intellectual property protection. With the support of platforms such as the R&D Institute, testing center, four major laboratories, and Shenzhen Home Design Week, the industry has advanced toward internationalization, reaching its current scale and status. Its furniture exports and domestic sales rank among the highest in the country.

Mr. Norov strongly agrees with this view. He has served as an ambassador to Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries, and is deeply familiar with cultures and histories from around the world. He is particularly fascinated by Chinese culture and history. He believes that every country’s cultural treasures embody a unique cultural and design essence. only through high standards and exceptional craftsmanship can these be preserved and passed down through generations.

Mr. Norov said Uzbekistan is learning from China and Shenzhen’s reform experience, calling the Shenzhen Furniture Association a valuable model.

He introduced Bukhara’s growth and rising demand for home furnishings, supported by major investments and a planned free economic zone.

Norov expressed interest in deeper cooperation with Shenzhen’s furniture industry, leveraging ties through Kashgar to boost regional trade and development.

In 2024, the total value of imports and exports in Shenzhen reached 4.5 trillion yuan, and Shenzhen once again became "China's No. 1 Foreign Trade City".

Over the past five years, the Shenzhen Municipal Government Work Report has placed different focuses on the goals of foreign trade work.

In 2021, the focus was on "upgrading the open system". In 2022, it was proposed to "build an international trade center city". In 2023, it emphasized "promoting the 'five-external linkage' of foreign trade, foreign investment, outsourcing, foreign economy and foreign intelligence". In 2024, the emphasis was placed on "achieving new breakthroughs in the construction of international trade hubs".

Shenzhen's construction of foreign trade is increasingly focused on enhancing its level and influence in the global trade landscape. From building a central city to strengthening multi-field interaction, and then to constructing a high-level hub, the goals are becoming clearer and more forward-looking.

In 2025, Shenzhen plans to expand the export scale of products from its advantageous industries, increase the import of key commodities such as advanced technology and equipment, key components, bulk energy, and high-quality agricultural products, build a national import trade promotion and innovation demonstration zone at a high quality, and continuously explore emerging markets such as the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Shenzhen has captured global attention by becoming a world-leading hub of manufacturing, innovation, and investment. It produces a significant share of global products such as smartphones, new energy vehicles, drones, and high-end eyewear. Known for its creativity and execution, Shenzhen combines complete industrial chains with rapid product development and strong tech enterprises like Huawei and BYD. It leads globally in the low-altitude economy with a thriving drone industry. In 2024, Shenzhen continued enhancing its business environment, launching investment-friendly policies and attracting major foreign investment, aiming to become the world’s top investment destination.
