Week 5 Journal Task One Step one: Our chosen site was the library. Step two: You can hear typing of a laptop keyboard and writing on paper. There are also people moving around and getting things out of their bags. Screwing up paper. You notice people reading and quietly discussing their work. The calm quietness of the room stands out to me. It makes you feel nice knowing there is a safe space to work and get your things done. The atmosphere is peaceful. Step three: As a group we decided to move a table into the circle and pretend to be typing on a laptop, quietly discussing things and then getting told to be quiet and someone screwing up paper. We felt like this was a good way to show the atmosphere of a library, as it’s a very straightforward situation. Like we have all been in a library and know what it sounds like. We also would have been able to tell them to close their eyes, as they would have been able to hear and understand all the noises we made as well, instead of just the visual we provided. Journal Task Two Describe two of your favorite pieces of clothing. One of my favorite pieces of clothing is this fluffy pink top I thrifted back in Christchurch for $7. I love how feminine I feel when I’m wearing it. The last time I wore it I was just walking around the city. It makes me feel like a bratz doll, and I can accessorize it in many ways. I’m going to keep it until it is no longer wearable. I have no clue what brand it is or where it came from because there is no tag or anything on the back.. No one will ever understand how important it is to me because it was such a moment of fate when I found it because it was exactly what I had been looking for. Another piece of clothing that I love is my wide leg white and black striped jeans. I love these jeans so much because they are such a perfect fit on me and they are so loud and in your face. They are defiantly a statement piece in my wardrobe. When I feel them I feel really confident in myself. The last time I wore them was a few days ago around the city. I’ve had them for about 2 years now and I am going to keep them for as long as they last. They are from Glasson’s so I am actually very surprised that they have lasted this well. I think all my family and friends know me by these jeans as I literally have worn them every other day for months on end. Journal Task Three Clothing is the best way to express yourself, not only does it reflects who you are. But it makes you feel more confident and can help increase your self-esteem levels as well as their mana. When I wear my fluffy pink top it allows me to express my girly feminine side where as when I wear my baggy wide leg striped pants it shows my more tomboy goth style. I love mixing them together and reaching a good level of girly and skater. The way I dress only reflects certain aspects of me. I feel like fashion is never going to reflect my entirety as I am always changing and so is my style. As we develop and find new clothing pieces our fashion changes with us. Finding thrifted pieces are so much more special than buying out of fast fashion because you never have a set intention on what you want until you find something that intrigues you.  Comparing my clothing to the cloaks that are hand made shows how more meaningful the cloaks are as they were hand made and they hold a great amount of mana. My clothes definitely haven’t had the same amount of care and special meaning poured into them while being made as they are from a more fast fashion brand. The cloaks had so much time and hard work put into making them. Where a lot of clothing these days are just made quickly and as cheap as possible. This also shows why wearing the proper garment was so powerful for Maori people, as it reflected their status and mana from how it was weaved, to the materials used and the time spend to make it to the highest quality. This is not something that is important to many people on an everyday basis, as clothing has become something very disposable for many, when we live in a society where the fast fashion industry has taken over.

Week 3 Journal Task A Critical feedback The things that I would change is that we should have better arranged group discussions to make sure no one feels isolated from a group or uncomfortable with where they are sitting. Also making sure names are introduced and when joining new groups so that new relationships can actually be formed. One thing I can do is make sure I am involving myself in conversations when possible and sharing my ideas thoughts so that discussions can flow better when no one is sharing ideas. Journal Task B The building itself has a massive influence of the atmosphere created when in and outside of the building. It is a neoclassical power plant from the 1950’s, which gives its industrial feel. The sense of history makes it more intriguing and mysterious also as instigates curiosity, making you want to see what its like inside as it is not your usual building for a club. Inside there are stairs, which lead onto the dance floor also with a bar above. There are also some small intimate spaces, and unisex toilets where the people are hidden from security to do as they please. The high ceilings give the space a nice openness feeling. It has a nice industrial style that gives a vibe of freedom, as it’s such an open space. It doesn’t feel fragile, like it could be damaged. The no photo policy gives a feeling of secretiveness and makes the experience more thrilling. People in the building are the only ones that get to see and experience the inside of the club, this including the art that is inside of the club that is there to emphasis the impact on the experience of the club. It makes it really interactive and immersive because you have to soak it all in to take in the atmosphere of the building as its entity. Getting into the club is not the easiest. Many people that spend hours waiting in line to get in are often rejected, so getting in is quite a victory. This fuels peoples wants and longing to get in and makes finally getting in have a sense of relief and excitement. The people who do get in will often have style codes that may include boots, leather jackets and dark casual clothing, as this is the type of people they accept. The techno music plays a big part in the atmosphere also. The music is accustomed to the vibe of the crowd and the building. It has a signature sound described as having an industrial punch and heavy groove. It is also quite brutal, raw, minimalistic and aggressive, as some would say it’s ‘in your face’. The ‘empty’ sound of the techno music is linked to the deserted party spaces in Berlin’s former death strip, so the industrial sound mimics the feeling of those spaces. Brigitte used words to describe the atmosphere as exciting, inspiring, relaxing, toxic, endlessly, quivering, resistant and reluctant, defiant and rebellious. Which are words that really help to imagine the feeling of the place. Journal Task C Kedron talks about the Terrace’s location and materials and how this affects it’s She described it as being ‘a long straight corridor of glass and steel, elevated above the city’. She also noted that it is physically separated from the rest of the CBD and has a disconnect from it’s natural state, (having been built on top of a stream) which reminds is of our disconnects of our Maori history. She said the terrace wasn’t a very friendly place, as it is full of driveways, taxis and vehicles. The terrace receives little sun and there are no trees or a place to sit which makes it an unwelcoming place to hang out. She said that she felt really uncomfortable and that she felt physically trapped. When it came to design her project for the terrace, she chose to insert audio speakers, as she said she wanted to have a voice in a place where she felt like she had disappeared. Other aspects she describes of the atmosphere includes how the wind whips down the terrace, hot it is a “cement canyon” where as an office worker, they sit in a box, leave that box and go down an elevator lift, which the whole building itself is a box. And then, once they leave the building they are restricted to the terrace where there are several stories high of concrete on one side. She thinks the terrace’s atmosphere is ‘drab, and uncomfortable and depressing’. When Kendron began the process of what she would put in the terrace, she thought about the audience experience carefully. She didn’t want an art piece that would damage them in anyway or have them be exhausted by the audio she played whilst walked through the terrace. This was because she noted that ‘the people are not choosing to walk through your art piece’. Her purpose was to make a place that gives people a sense of nourishment, in a place that isn’t exactly nourishing. She wanted her audio clips to improve the people’s day as well as improve their wellbeing and feeling of safety. Therefore, it was a subtle intervention, where it isn’t overpowering and won’ hinder their day in anyway. She wanted to make it as much of a stream as possible, where it can be something they walk through and not have to think. She wants people to be able to relax, even if they’re not conscious of it. The first idea she had was to incorporate birdlife into the city. She wanted to put birdlife back into the cement corridors of the terrace, to give the effect of the stream still being alive. To imitate this, she had to gage what stream would have been like and the birdlife that would have been there at the time. She thought about the stream itself, about how wide it was and how fast the flow was, and then also what birds would have been there. She took into consideration how it was a block away from the shoreline so there would be sea birds, potentially penguins and birds coming from Australia. She has to think about how to incorporate all of these birds with a quirky touch of having the kiwi call sounding every hour. Kedron commented on how she liked that people who don’t know nothing about it can appreciate it for what it is and then the people who know more can walk through and understand the choices and ideas behind it all. The stream is really just for the peoples talking, and so they get from it what they want.

Journal Task C~ Consider two elements of ethics:~ ~Rules that govern the safety of everyone in the process~ Building and maintaining relationships is an important part of making the person feel safe during the process. People who are vulnerable will feel much safer if extra care is taken while forming the relationship where pressure or manipulation is not present. It is also a good idea to work with communities to become a familiar face, so that trust and communication can be built. The avoidance of harm also needs to be considered, as the risks of physical and psychological harm need to be evaluated to ensure they are avoided. This also includes making sure ones Mana is respected, and no damage is caused to their reputation and relationships. Being cautious is also important, such as making sure we are being politically astute and culturally safe during the process.~ ~Guidelines to how we engage with others:~ There are many important aspects of how we should engage with others, one of them being Aroha. Treating people with kindness and respect shows you care and means you allow them control. This means the participant can make decisions such as what information stays confidential and whether they choose to participate anonymously. Whanaungatanga is also really important as building and maintaining relationships, as well as engagement show respect and that we care. Humility is also important, as we need to collaborate and listen to others when sharing knowledge so that we can understand each other better and foster trust in the relationships we make.

Journal task B~ ~Option A ~Haiyan Zhang~ It stared out by Haiyan getting to know Emma’s story. By doing this it allowed her to get to know her and become aware of all Emma’s needs and things she would have to consider in order to help Emma. Haiyan discovered that Emma is a designer who also has Parkinson’s diseas. This means that the tremors from this disease disable her to be able to write and free hand draw. This means that some sort of solution is required in order to enable her to be able to do this.~ Haiyan began trialing with Emma, different ways she would be able to write, and then observed how each test worked. She was able to get Emma to firstly use a pentagraph to see if that would help her maintain more control while using the pen. They quickly found that this did not work and Emma said that is actually magnifying her shakes. Haiyan then tested a pen that uses a magnet, which is supposed to give you more control when writing. The outcome of this was that it was a difficult and fiddly contraption to use that needed Haiyan to hold the magnet in place when Emma wrote. With all this Emma was still struggling to control the pen. Although these ideas didn’t have a successful outcome, Haiyan was still able to eliminate the areas that didn’t work and focus on finding better alternatives of how she can alter the way the pen is used.~ After all the experimenting was completed, Haiyan discussed with her team to share ideas and find out what best will help Emma and her needs. She did some research before going to this meeting to share ideas she found. She researched what is already in the market for Parkinson’s disease and found that someone had designed a spoon that vibrates, which helps to counteract the tremors of Parkinson’s. She used this inspiration of the spoon to begin experimenting with vibrations and how she can incorporate this with using a pen. ~ Then Haiyan went on and created a prototype of a vibrator. She the created focused group of people who also suffer from Parkinson’s disease to try test her prototype on. Everyone that was involved in this test had different symptoms of Parkinson’s as they were at different stages. This meant that she would be able to see how well her prototype worked on multiple different suffers. This helped her to be able to know what would be required of her product. Haiyan also programmed her prototype to allow her to change the strength and speed of the vibrations on her computer in order to suit each persons needs. By testing her prototype on multiple people, she found that changing the pattern of the vibration seemed to have an effect and she would be able to use this concept for Emma. ~

Different Types of Engagement~ Most to Least~Camera Modifications Emma’s Wristband Stop Collaborate Listen Chinatown Bridge Wall Projections The Calypso sculpture Le Corbusier’s Building ~I have ranked Le Corbusier’s example last as it is definitely the least engaging out of all of these designs. I noticed that all of these designs had similar types of engagement once comparing them against one another, which made it hard to separate them as indiviuals. Le Corbusier’s design doesn’t consider the rights and needs of everybody living in the city. This is why I decided to put it last. ‘Stop Collaborate Listen’ and ‘the wall projections and art productions of the Chinatown Brigade’ and ‘The Calypso Sculpture’ together as they all have a similar type of collaborative engagement.  They involved engaging certain individuals but, but also spread wider to communities and the public. The ideas and decisions are made by a small group or one person but are then spread wider to engage with all members of the community. Finally I put ‘The camera Modifications’ and “Emma’s Wristband’ together at the top, because I feel like these engage in a very similar way where they engage on a personal level with the main focus having similar ends.

Dystopian City~ The traffic light shines red against my skin as I merge between the foggy streets. Every sound is loud in my ears. People are rushing past me aggressively, pushing their shoulder against mine. My heart feels heavy, weighing deep into my stomach. The ground is dusty against my shoes. The wind is dragging pieces of rubbish around in circles.  The clouds are dark, and a musty smell lingers in the air. Everything feels so dull. Chaos surrounds the city. Nobody cares about this plant anymore. The grass is brown and dying. It hasn’t rained in months. People throw their cigarette buds onto the streets, without caring about the damage they are causing. I try to get far away from people as I can, while speeding through the streets. I’m trying to get home but everyone’s blocking my way. As I finally reach the entrance to my apartment building, I notice how the plant in the entrance way has drooped down and lost its colour. Nobody cares anymore. We were spoilt rotten yet we turned everything stale with our ignorance. Now we are stuck in this rut. A wasteland.  I slowly walk into my apartment building. My shoulders hang low as I’ve lost all energy to be alive in this world. I press the button for the elevator. But it just glows red, telling me its out of order. A sigh leaves my mouth as I lug my bag back over my shoulder and head towards the stairwell. A narrow staircase looks back at me as I push open the rusty door. Its very dark and gloomy as there is only one singular window letting in a glimpse of light. My legs burn as I walk up and up and up. It feels like its never ending. Every waking moment for me feels never ending. I don’t know how we ended up here. Why everything’s so messed up.

Ville Radieuse / Le Corbusier’s Vision I personally like the idea of apartment living, and saving space by designing massive buildings. Although the idea that it is utopia doesn’t really make sense to me, because I believe there’s no such thing as a perfect place. Everybody’s idea of perfect is different. It might be very ideal for some but not so much for others. The idea of being stuck into one confined space might not be appealing to people who want to feel more free in this world. It may make people feel like they are just living the same life as everybody else. However for me I would love to live in an apartment with thousands of other people overlooking a beautiful city. But I can understand that if you were more of a nature lover type person you would find it hard being in a more materialistic confined space, such as an apartment building. However I like how his design is dubbed as the “vertical garden city” and that it lets in a lot of natural sunlight and air, and also having rooftop gardens and beaches. This would benefit the people who are more into the nature aspects of life. I definitely feel like I can see both sides of this design, what would appeal and what wouldn’t. I think it just comes down to what lifestyle you want as a person in our society today. I believe that this design seems to provide for everyone’s needs.
