he raised his hands in defense. “i would never,” he lied. that wasn’t what he was doing, but he absolutely would. “all i’m saying is, i think you would do better, thrive even, at stark industries. that’s all! your talents are being wasted. you have way more potential than your dad will ever let you explore, because he risks being accused of nepotism. me? no nepotism here. and if i play favorites, no one’s gonna say a word,” he shrugged. tony couldn’t help but smirk a little. he had this kid hooked. “very flexible. it’s more about what you get done, less about when or how you get it done. as long as you don’t start clocking in 60 hours a week because you don’t want to leave the lab, we’ll be okay,” he said with a smile. “you can use our resources for that project, too. and funding.” it’s a good deal, there’s no denying it.
harry clearly wasn’t buying tony’s lie, but again, he found himself respecting the move. “you do have a good point,” harry admitted. it was hard for him to even pretend like he wasn’t interested, even just a little bit, in tony’s offer. it was a great offer, an offer he would be stupid to refuse, even. and honestly, the more he heard, the more he wanted to accept. but he didn’t know if he could without even mentioning it to his father first - but asking for forgiveness was easier than permission, or so he’d heard. “i won’t... unless you’ve got a lab that makes it hard to want to leave,” he joked, already surprised at how easy it felt to agree with tony. this can’t be the same man his dad had been bashing for years, can it? “this is all really tempting, mr. stark... could you give me 24 hours to get back to you? i’ve gotta sit on it.. maybe get some things in order...” it wasn’t entirely a yes just yet, but it certainly didn’t sound like a no.

“new york does have so much,” karolina agrees, eyes wide. california did too, in its own way, but it had nothing compared, not even close, to the variety of anything new york could bring. “wouldn’t it be a nuisance, to work so far from where you live?” she questions, slight pout on her lips. “well, it wasn’t quite my choice,” karolina started, not knowing how much she could tell the other. “see i’m not from around here,” and this last part is slightly whispered, and karolina leans in a little so laurie could hear her properly. she isn’t quite sure the other is going to understand but… it’s worth a shot, right?
“as long as you’re willing to wait for the subway, you can pretty much find anything you want,” laurie mused. then again, she hasn’t been too far from home, afraid to venture too far out into the world until she met her friends. now, with them gone, she’s at least grateful to be somewhere familiar. “i guess?” laurie shrugged. “but there’s more space out there, so i guess people are fine with working far from home if their home has what they want.” she’d never really questioned it, living nearby her whole life. “what exactly do you mean?” laurie replied, her own tone hushed as she leaned in to meet karolina.

“it’s fine, thank you.” jon says, voice small. “it’s a big city,” he nods, trying to appear a bit more cheerful. “it’s kinda like new york, actually. but the people are heaps nicer. and i don’t really need the subway to get around,” and jon terribly missed flying, but he wasn’t sure it was safe enough to do so yet - would he alert someone, perhaps the person that put him here, of his presence? it was a terrifying idea. “uh… delaware.”
“really? i’ve never heard of it,” harry answered, surprised he didn’t know of a city as big as jon describes it. “what do you use to get around then?” harry couldn’t imagine a city without a subway, but then again, he figured maybe this place doesn’t have the amount of traffic new york does. “oh, delaware? heh that makes sense... i dunno a lot about delaware. but at least you’re not too far from home!” harry tries to be optimistic. “if your family’s back there, there’s probably an amtrak train or a greyhound bus or something that can get you there.”

“i think i can manage that. thanks, h,” he teased back, nudging him. honestly, peter wasn’t really bothered. this was nothing compared to what he usually did in a day, but his feet were a little sore. nothing he couldn’t handle, though. “oh, thanks. you’re always looking out for me,” he said, rolling his eyes, a smile painted on his lips. he appreciated the reminder. it was so easy to not get a lot of sleep, especially with fun toys like this lab to play with. “i’ll do my best, but no promises,” he said with a grin. peter nodded, his arms crossed over his chest. “let’s see it,” he said. he raised his eyebrows as he explained, thoroughly impressed. “shit, harry, that’s so cool. where are you gonna put them?”
“of course i am,” harry replied with a grin. “what are friends for?” he also happened to share a similar drive to peter, and knew that for as much sleep as he lacked, peter was probably lack just as much (if not more). “right? the biggest hurdle is figuring out how to filter the air and what to do with the filters - i don’t wanna make an even bigger pollution problem with those,” he sighed. “or i could convert the toxins into something after they get filtered, but i dunno what yet.” the possibilities were endless, but honestly, if he could just get the filter right, he’d be on a good track. “i’m gonna put them everywhere i can! they’d probably go on top of buildings, and it’ll probably depend on how big of a radius they can filter from, but i’ll build as many as it takes.”

she doesn’t expect the sudden eagerness from the other mutant . “ that’s good . ” illyana and dani didn’t get off on the right foot when they first met . that’s partially on illyana . but overtime they’ve become friends of the sort and she’s come to respect dani . “ what’s your team called again ? ” she can’t help but ask . the blonde couldn’t tell if dani was joking when they last spoke .
laurie wasn’t quite aware of the history between illyana and dani, and if she’d known, she probably would have had a more casual answer from the start. “um, the new mutants squad,” laurie answered bashfully. “creative, i know. it wasn’t my idea.”

Reading usually helped Peggy de-stress, and she had decades of new titles to catch up on. She walked the corridors of the nearest book store, looking for something that caught her attention, but there were so many options she didn’t know where to start. With her bad turned to the corridor, facing the science fiction shelf, Peggy didn’t see someone coming until she felt the impact. A huge pile of books collided against her, and the kneeled to help the girl pick up some of them. “It’s no problem at all, but would you like some help carrying them? This is quite the collection.” Peggy took a moment to read one of the titles she picked from the ground, wondering if it would fit her own taste.
“um, sure, even just to the counter? thank you,” laurie replied, feeling flustered as she tried to gather up the books again. she wasn’t sure how she ever got them in her arms as she struggled to hold even a fraction of what she had earlier. “i couldn’t decide on what i wanted... so i thought i’d get it all. i needed to start my collection anyway...”

“ i recognize all of you. " granted, it was odd to see all of them back in 2012 when she had still been getting her bearings of being a part of the x - men, but in their present timeline she knew exactly who laurie was, even if she had been a bit too busy to train with her personally. ororo sent her a warm smile, gesturing for her to come closer. " i've mastered the selfie now … or, at least i had in the other timeline. if you pass me your phone i'll take it for us. ”
“well, it’s just me here, i think,” laurie admitted, meaning she was the only one of her squad in 2012 as far as she knew. it was nice to at least have some other familiar faces, but she would be feeling a lot more sure about what to do around here with her team in the same situation. she giggled at ororo’s welcoming words, coming closer to her and passing her phone over. “the only thing is, phones here don’t have as nice of cameras as they do in the future! i took some pretty awful selfies in 2012, i’d know.”

bucky wasn’t a big fan of trains, nor was he a fan of closed in spaces, but sometimes the subway was the best way to go. he was on a mission, after all, and while it wasn’t time sensitive by any means, that didn’t mean he wanted to drag his feet either. he should really just give up on all this and to stay in the tower with the rest of his friends, but he was still pretty undecided about the whole thing. as he was going down, he was headed off by a young woman. “oh? that’s a shame. i guess i should catch a cab. where were you headed?”
he seemed to agree not to go down there easily enough, which filled laurie with enough relief to avoid accidentally setting off her powers. there were plenty of people in this city who would have just ignored what laurie said and gone down there anyway, because they were stubborn or they were curious or they didn’t believe her, only to either find the remnants of what she’d done or at least find that she was telling the truth. “yeah, they put out an announcement not too long ago,” she shrugged. “um, just downtown to some market. why?”

Though many questions had been answered with the recent revelations about who was behind the attacks on the city and the time displacement, neither the X-Men nor the others were any closer to figuring out why Mutant X and his hammer-wielding friend were doing this, or how to stop them and return home. They still had a lot of work to do, where exactly to start not entirely clear yet. Logan sighed, exiting the bar and making his way back to the Institute. He sensed the bicycle approaching moments before he spotted it, stopping the vehicle with one hand and avoiding the young brunette crashing into him. Her scent was instantly familiar, but…Logan was having trouble placing her. Was she one of his students? The mutant frowned at the other as she apologized, eyes narrowing at her choice of words. What the hell was that supposed to mean? “Yeah,” he said, a matter-of-fact tone to his voice. “Also add being aware of your surroundings to that list.”
There was intimidating, and then there was Logan. Laurie knew she was timid around plenty of people - it was an easy defense mechanism, being too timid to attract attention had its perks when you were actively trying to avoid manipulating those around you, but it wasn’t just some sort of act. Her own mother’s reclusiveness had bled into her own shyness, making this just her personality. Opening up to people had been hard, but the Xavier Institute had helped. Logan, however, had always scared Laurie, with his strong presence and gruff attitude he was a force you could sense a mile away. It’s why she was so flustered to realize she hadn’t seen him coming, and was even more embarrassed and nervous seeing she had caught him in a bad mood. “I’m so sorry,” she replied, looking down at the ground. “I should have been, you’re right. I don’t know what happened.” This was the sort of thing that probably would have gotten her ass handed to her in training, too. “A-are you okay?” she asked stupidly.

Billy was waiting as his order was being baked when another person walked up to the counter. He had stepped aside, giving room for anyone who would’ve come to order after him. What Billy hadn’t realize was that there was only one employee, so as long as they were busy making his order, Billy was left alone with a complete stranger in awkward silence… With not even his phone. Thankfully, the other spoke first, taking the burden off Billy to break the silence. “The city that never sleeps, right?” he jested with a light chuckle and a shrug of his shoulders. “Maybe.. I also might’ve ordered a whole one for myself,” he confessed with embarrassment.
Usually, it was customary to mind one’s business in a situation like this, but Harry was feeling talkative after spending the entire day with his head down in his notes, and this guy didn’t seem too hostile to the idea of small talk. “Yeah, but there’s something to be said about those of us who don’t sleep,” Harry commented with a chuckle. “Honestly? I respect that. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t. But I’ve got shit to do still and I don’t need to risk a food coma, you know?”

tara was going to have to add that to her list of things to check out. after all, flying back and forth on rocks wasn't exactly subtle, and she didn't want to attract any attention to herself. “ is that not what it's called ? someone called it a loop ! i guess like a loop de loop ? like you feel kind of disoriented ? " she felt a blush rise on her cheeks, positive that she wasn't making any sense at all now that she'd said it out loud. ” i'm from jump city ! it's not anywhere near here, i don't think. “
“is that not what what’s called?” laurie asked, confused. she wondered if tara might have been referring to the thing that sucked laurie back in time, but she didn’t want to say it first and sound crazy if tara happened to be talking about something else. she’d yet to admit to anyone what she’d experienced, actually, worried about the consequences of confessing to the wrong person. “oh, i don’t think i’ve heard of it! where’s that?”

the lecture on green energy the university had held that night was interesting, and harry got a lot of good inspiration for his project, but it also had the side-effect of reminding him of just how much he missed his mom. it’d been longer without her than he’d cared to realize, and though he carried her memory in his work, it still sucked that she wasn’t here to see it finally start to come together. in his distracted thoughts, harry nearly passed anya without a second thought, but spun around on his heel once he realized he’d nearly breezed right by her in the night. “hey!” harry tried to chase the thoughts away with some cheerful ones. “i didn’t know you’d be hanging around here tonight.”

ah, she knew this face. one of the newer members, not one that she'd gotten to talk to very much but known to her for various reasons. ororo sent her a smile, giving the little one in her arms another big hug before placing them down so they could run to their parents. “ i don't think a picture was going to be in our future. you can come closer, laurie. contrary to popular belief, i don't bite. don't let them tell you otherwise, " she chuckled with another wink. ” would you like a picture ? “
honestly, laurie was surprised ororo knew her name. she was used to fading into the background, for being the one forgotten. it wasn’t like she minded that - it was safer that way. plus, this told laurie something important: that ororo had gotten pulled back in time just like she had. in 2012, a younger laurie hadn’t even met the xmen, let alone trained alongside some of them. these things brought her some comfort, allowing her nerves to shed a bit. “i, um, i didn’t realize you would recognize me,” laurie admitted, her cheeks a bit red. “um, sure, thank you.”

if laurie was going to be stuck in 2012 for the forseeable future, she figured she would at least try and build up her book collection, seeing all of it was in some other dimension in some other time. but when starting from next to nothing (save the few paperbacks she’d picked up secondhand when she refused to accept her new reality), laurie wanted everything she saw at the bookstore. ah, well, support local businesses, right? and it was just that mentality that lead to laurie carrying a stack of books so high that her eyes just barely peaked out over the last book, and it was that unfortunate position that lead her to crash into someone, causing her books to spill from her arms and scatter on the ground. “sorry! i got a little overzealous with these...”

laurie’s sure time travel has made her lose a bit of her mind. normally, she would have never forgotten her book when she left to get lunch, but she’d been so focused on how hungry she was, she realized after she’d eaten that her book wasn’t with her. it was nothing of great importance, per say, but she wanted to know how it ended, and was retracing her steps through the park to the bench where she was reading. on the way, she saw a familiar face, and tried to hide her worried expression. “oh, hey may!” laurie greeted when they made eye contact. “um, by any chance, have you seen a book around here all by itself? i kinda lost mine...”

it wasn’t the first time harry had fallen asleep in the library, and he was sure it wouldn’t be the last. but waking up to darkness outside the large windows also meant he’d slept through normal dinner hours, and so his marathon of studying would have to be cut short (though, it already had been) to find something to eat. his stomach almost instantly agreed with him upon that realization, growling as he gathered up his things. luckily, there were plenty of places still open at this hour, though not willing to go too far, harry found himself waiting in a pizzeria for something quick to take home. “guess i’m not the only one eating late,” harry mused, seeing someone else waiting for pizza. “didn’t realize they’d need to make a whole pie from scratch. must’ve been busy tonight.”

being a mutant, laurie could understand a lot of supernatural happenings in this city. while yeah, it was frustrating that the subway wasn’t running due to a “mutant-related electrical issue,” she hoped whoever had caused it was alright, rather than being angry at them about it. the same couldn’t be said for others, the crowd growing more and more impatient and angry by the minute, some even resorting to threats. it was the first time she’d intentionally used her powers since coming here, trying to just calm those around her, despite not feeling very calm herself. it didn’t entirely work, but the realization of what she’d done left her filled with shame, and she quickly made her way up the stairs, hoping no one would catch on. of course, someone was approaching right as she reached the top. “don’t even bother going down there,” laurie warned before realizing that might have sounded rude. “s-sorry. i just meant that, um, the trains aren’t running right now. they’re not gonna be back up for a while.”
