Contemporary Art is said to be site specific, interactive, process-based, and collaborative. You may be thinking right now, “Is making contemporary art really that complicated? Can’t it be just art that is made in the present?!” Well dear reader, you can make art in the present, but it may be modern not contemporary. Let’s see if WOTL has these 4 elements.

Site specific. 

Of course, it is indeed site specific. It takes place in the Philippines. In a Contemporary art, the site must show the location of the art and why it should be there since if removed, it would lose its substantial meaning.

Interactive.

Lourd’s main goal is to target the mass. He makes sure each segments comply with the audience. Unlike any other documentaries or news, he did it in a casual and approachable way. He also uses medium (ex. memes, street words) understood by many, which makes it interactive

Process based. 

An art should be plan ahead and it takes long and meticulous process. Word of the Lourd delivers the flow with the use of media in a documentary/news/blog style. It takes a lot of groundwork, writing and logistics before molding the piece.

Collaborative. 

Debunking social issues or history with a twist. What makes it collaborative is that Lourd makes sure he creates context that relates to different social issues whether it’s political or history that happened decades ago.

 

In our opinion, we consider WOTL as a contemporary art. Lourd de Veyra used media as an instrument to express his motives on current issues in the society and to influence people, making them more aware of the place they live in. He let people experience and understand art as a window to Philippine Contemporary Life.

The word of the Lourd is an example of contemporary art because most of his word is caustic humor that takes off from national issues and Filipino Pop Culture. He believes that humor is an effective way to connect with the audiences as its one-way Filipino face their problems. As a lyricist and songwriter, Lourd de Veyra’s style being together a mixture of wit, naughtiness, irony, farce, word play and humor.Moreover, when he composes a song, he always mixes poetry with orchestral music, so his word is reflect as an contemporary arts.  The word of the Lourd is an example of contemporary arts because he uses both poetic license and music to deliver definitive statement about issues concerning Philippines society and modern culture. Word of the Lourd shows so many thing about Filipino, so it is an example of an contemporary arts. In addition, he believes that the relationship between the audience and the media should ideally be symbiotic and humor has always been an effective with the audience. 

Word of Lourd described his inclination for jazz and poetry, jazz and poetry is all about contemporary arts. Word of the Lourd is a series of short dips that poke fun at our culture, the media, and whatever else that can be poked. Contemporary art is seen in music. It influenced our country, the Philippines and this is reflected in the band called Radioactive Sago Project. Lourd de Veyra leads this band radioactive sago project, their genre are consist of spoken word poetry, jazz, punk, soul, afro-latin, metal, and a mad sundry of musical styles sprinkled with massive doses of humor and irony.” Their genre is very different from the mainstream music that we hear today and it is not pop so the music is different to other genre. In that genre is related to the contemporary arts. When you listen to the lyrics and music that he composed,  it totally sounds wrecked because the organization of sounds are clusters of sounds produced by different types of instruments at different intervals which creates a noise effect. Every video they take the video also portrays a wrecked life of the common Filipino experiencing poverty, death of a loved one though there may be love and friendship among them all along. The message of the song that he composed is about how totally wrecked the system in the Philippines is.This is an example of contemporary music that we rarely see because this is not showcased in radios and televisions. The band’s style of being nationalistic is reflected on the sound of their music and their lyrics. One may say that it is not music because they are exposed to mainstream music but this is the distinctiveness of contemporary music. It is not limited to the common standards. Therefore, the word of the Lourd is an example of contemporary arts because in contemporary arts it provides an opportunity to reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and the world around us. Every word that he said and every video that he portray, is all about contemporary because in every video that he portray is a wrecked life the common Filipino that experiencing the issues that relevant to ourselves. Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality.That’s way the word of Lourd is an example of contemporary arts.
