can't stop thinking about your videos on the retellings of theseus and the minotaur esp as someone who didn't have the best time with greek plays or other "older" texts (think shakespeare, frankenstein) in high school. planning on rewatching those videos + subscribing to your patreon soon bc i feel like you've opened this whole new world of literature to me. anyway i was just wondering if you had an intro video or reading list to essential myths (or horror) ? thanks for your time
I don't have an "essential reading/watching" list because what is essential or impactful and enjoyable for me might not be so for you, and vice versa. But I've curated some of the more popular Greek myths--as well as some Irish and Mesopotamian myths because I love those as well and they don't really get discussed as much.
Greek: The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Oresteia, The Aeneid, Antigone, Medea, Electra, Metamorphoses, Theseus, Hymn to Demeter
Irish: Táin Bó Cúalange, The Fenian Cycle, The Mythological Cycle, The Historical Cycle
Mesopotamian: The Epic of Gilgamesh, Descent of the Goddess Ishtar into the Lower World, Enūma Eliš
As for horror, these lists aren't necessarily of my favorites, but different horror media that I think is emblematic of and/or foundational to the genre. There are many different kinds of horror, some of which I like more than others, but hopefully this list can help you find something you like. (links are all free access to the media in question)
Books: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, Perfume: The Story of A Murderer by Patrick Süskind, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin, Beloved by Toni Morrison, Books of Blood by Clive Barker, House of Leaves by Mark Z. I fantasize about being a hero to you. Saving you from the arms of the undeserved. They will never cherish you as much as I.
